CURTIS J. PRIDE Curtis John Pride was born in Washington, D.C. on December 17, 1968. By the age of nine months, audiological tests confirmed that Pride was profoundly deaf. At the age of two, his parents moved to Silver Spring, Maryland and enrolled him in the Montgomery County Public School System's Auditory Services infant program. Pride was fully mainstreamed in his neighborhood schools from grade seven until his graduation from John F. Kennedy High School in 1986. In addition to graduating with a 3.6 GPA, Curtis Pride enjoyed an outstanding high school athletic career. Pride broke virtually the entire single season and career records for soccer, basketball and baseball at Kennedy High School. Pride was also a first team Parade Magazine All-American soccer player and a member of the U.S. National team that participated in the Junior World Cup in Beijing, China in 1985. As a result of his play in China, Pride was selected by Kick Magazine as one of the top fifteen youth soccer players in the world. Just prior to graduation, the New York Mets drafted Curtis Pride, who had already accepted a full basketball scholarship to the College of William and Mary. Through a unique arrangement negotiated among the Pride family, the New York Mets and the College of William and Mary, Curtis Pride signed with the Mets as a part-time baseball player while he attended college as a full-time student athlete. Pride was a four-year basketball starter at point guard at William and Mary and graduated in 1990 with a degree in finance.

STATE CHAMPS...1982, 1990, 1991, 1997, 2000, 2002!!!

Hello to all that have accessed our "unofficial" baseball site. Our official school site is www.johncurtis.com if you wish to find out more about the school. We here at John Curtis pride ourselves on excellence: From the classroom, to the fields to our everyday lives. We thank you for visiting and hope you join us in our quest for being the best!
Don't forget to sign our guestbook! The Natural Lady Patriots...BACK TO BACK STATE CHAMPIONS!!! In almost duplicate fashionfrom last year, just with much less drama, the Lady Patriots defeated the Vandebilt Catholic Lady Terriers to win the 2004 4A State Softball Championship. The victory gives the Lady Patriots back to back state titles, as they also defeated Vandebilt last year to take the title. Jessica Barksdale, who did not give up a run in the state tournament, took all five victories on the mound. We are so proud of our Lady Patriot softball team. The ladies finished the year 27-2, and compiled the best record ever for a Patriot softball team! Congratulations to all of the seniors, players, coaches, parents and families who made this state title happen.

Cubs fans would sing the rock song "Wild Thing" when Mitch Williams emerged from the Chicago bullpen in 1989, in reference to his explosive but uncontrollable fastball. Williams reached a career high in saves with 36 for the Cubs in 1989, but his control problems make him dangerous both to hitters and to his own teams (220 walks in 275 career innings through 1988), and his lunging follow-through leaves him in horrible defensive position after each pitch. Williams set a ML rookie record with 80 appearances for the Rangers in 1986, and he pitched 85 times in 1987, but saved only 14 games over the two seasons. In 1988 the flamethrower improved his control somewhat (only 6.2 walks per nine innings) and saved 18 games for the Rangers. An eight-player off-season trade made him a Cub.

Gary N. Gray Curtis John Pride
Disabled baseball player First of all, most disabled African American males in America would like to thank Curtis John Pride for putting on that New York Mets Minor League baseball uniform. Second this fine young gentleman took on every sport in high school and succeeded in most. A young gentleman named Curtis John Pride changed the history of baseball. Curtis Pride was born December 17, 1968. At the age of two Pride's parents knew that their child would be deaf with the many audiological tests in his young life. He went to school the in metropolitan area of our nation's capitol Washington D.C. His parents enrolled him in the Montgomery County Public School System Auditory Services infant program. Somehow African American parents of disabled children start their schooling just a little sooner then others. My parents did the same with me. Call it parents of disabled child-HEAD START. But I have found that most gifted disabled children have started school at age 2 ½ to three years old. Parents must think that their children must get a head start on able-bodied children to make up for their disability. Pride was then fully mainstreamed in his neighborhood school in the D.C. area from grade seven until graduation at John F. Kennedy High School in 1986. He had an outstanding athletic career his whole life, playing soccer, basketball, and baseball. He seemed to excel in everything that the game gave him at Kennedy High School. He went to Beijing, China with the United States National Soccer Team in the Junior World Cup. He played so well that Kick Magazine named him one of the top 15 players in the world. An astounding feat for a young disabled brother.

After "Hoop Dreams" and "Brian's Song," what have you got? "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" and "Necessary Roughness" is what." - Will Lingo of Baseball America B aseball America , with the help of Gene Shalit, a panel of experts participating in our Century Celebration, staff members and friends of Baseball America , set out to pick their ten favorite baseball movies. S halit helped them determine two key criteria: it's worth watching ten years after its release, and its characters are interesting enough to be enjoyed by people who know nothing about baseball. Here are their top ten. Ten Best Movies Poster Movie Major League (1989) The Sandlot (1993) It's probably the least known of any of the movies on our list, but It's by far the most charming of all the baseball movies featuring kids that followed "The Bad News Bears." A cast of unknowns, except for James Earl Jones, creates a fond remembrance of what it was like to play neighborhood ball together. A League of Their Own (1992) The movie is more about women fighting for their rights than the game on the field, but the women are credible as baseball players, except maybe Lori Petty. The movie also brought attention to a forgotten piece of baseball history, and it gets extra credit for adding the line "There's no crying in baseball" to the vernacular.

She has traveled all over the world during her career...sometimes because that's where Curtis is playing ball! Lisa has also worked the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, a Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup Finals, College Bowl games (including a National Championship game), and many other exciting sporting events. Her favorite interview to date; however, took place in 1994 when she did a story on a young hearing impaired boy who was meeting his hero for the first time. Who was that hero? It was none other than Lisa's husband, Curtis Pride! Meeting Curtis was Lisa's first introduction to the hearing impaired world. She was amazed by Curtis and his ability to read her lips with ease. Lisa was overwhelmed by Curtis' confidence and courage. Here was a man that didn't bother to let his hearing loss get in the way of achieving his dreams - a college diploma and making the Major Leagues.
