Baseball fan that he was, Blackmun chronicled the history of the sport back to its beginnings on the Elysian Fields of Hoboken, New Jersey (No, Virginia, Abner Doubleday did not invent baseball in Cooperstown, New York). In the course of setting out the history, Blackmun, pleased with himself and the assignment, named many of the all time baseball greats, even such as Hans Lobert, a Philadelphia Phillies speedster who was far from a household name outside of his own house. When the opinion was passed around to the other judges for review, they noted names Blackmun had not included. Justice Thurgood Marshall complained that Blackmun had not included any black players. Blackmun tried to make the case that he was writing about the earlier days of baseball, but soon realized his error and added Jackie Robinson and others. Potter Stewart, the Reds fan, complained about the absence of a few Reds players. Blackmun dutifully added their names. A few of the other justices enjoyed twitting him about their favorites that had been left out, and Blackmun kept revising his list to satisfy all his colleagues. It ballooned to 88 names.

"Look at misfortune the same way you look at success: Don't panic. Do your best and forget the consequences." -WALTER ALSTON, Dodger manager (1954-76) Pirates' first baseman Duff Cooley has only two putouts in a 6-5 defeat to the Phillies. Citing the abolition of spitball as the reason for the dramatic home run increase, A's veep Tom Shibe denies the baseballs are livelier this season. Mr. Schibe is also a member of the company which makes the baseballs. In a 6-5 victory at Chicago's Wrigley Field, Phillies' outfielder Richie Ashburn extends his consecutive hitting streak to 23 games tying the major league rookie record. "Whitey' establishes a a 20th-century mark, which will be match this season by Alvin Dark breaking Jimmy Williams 1899 streaks of 27 and 26.

Dear Joe, Of all the great hitter in the past, there is so much speculation about how much they were aided by their home field. Two players I am wondering about are Mel Ott and Chuck Klein. Both homerun hitting lefties who played their home games, and enjoyed most of their success, in fields with short RF fences. What part, if any, do you think these parks played in these players careers? Thanks for your time, Morgan D. Joe Mock's Response Morgan, Thanks for writing me at the Baseball Guru. A lot has been written about Mel Ott and how his hitting stats were probably aided by his home park, so I decided to delve first into Chuck Klein. As you probably know, his career looks like this: Years Team Home park 1928 through 1933 Phils Baker Bowl 1934 through mid '36 Cubs Wrigley mid '36 through mid '38 Phils Baker Bowl mid '38 through mid '39 Phils Shibe Park mid '39 through end '39 Pirates Forbes Field 1940 through 1944 Phils Shibe Park All of this moving around makes analysis tricky (the Phils did keep trading to get him back, didn't they!). And the stats I looked at didn't differentiate between home and away ... so let's make the following assumptions:
