A Few Head-scratchers and Random Thoughts
By Tom Tippett
May 10, 1999 The early part of the 1999 season has left me scratching my head and wondering "what on earth were they thinking?" more than a few times. Here are a few of those puzzlers along with some random observations about the season to date.
"In left field for Seattle, Brian Hunter"
The Mariners entered the season with more outfielders than they had room for, and all of them Griffey, Buhner, Huskey, and Mabry got off to a good-to-very-good starts. So what's the problem? Well, it seems they've been having trouble finding a "real" leadoff hitter. They tried David Segui, and although he went 7-for-14 in his first series as a leadoff hitter, his career on-base percentage (OBP) is only a little above the league average, and you'd hope that your leadoff hitter would get on base more than that. So I'm not surprised that the team felt that their offense might be more efficient if they went out and acquired a legitimate top-of-the-order guy. But why Brian Hunter? There's no question that he has the speed for the role since 1996, he's averaged 50 steals a year with an excellent 84% success rate. And he's a terrific defensive center fielder. But his career OBP is a rather uninspiring .316 (thirty-three points below Segui's), and there's no way that his steals can make up for the fact that he reaches base at least 50 fewer times per season than you'd expect from a good leadoff hitter. Furthermore, you're taking playing time away from Mabry and Huskey, who have already combined for 8 homers in 1999. That's half as many as Hunter has hit in his entire career.

MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?

... Home GOING BACK TO THE SHOW Since its inception in 1998, the Atlantic League has been home to professional ball players both in the early stages of their careers as well as the latter stages. Quiet simply playing in the Atlantic League means different things to different players. The league has seen such Major League players as Jose Canseco, Ruben Sierra, Tim Raines, Jose Lima, Rickey Henderson, Pete Incaviglia, Kim Batiste, Carlos Baerga, Jim Leyritz, Jaime Navarro, Mariano Duncan, Jose Offerman and countless others. Some of these players were looking for another Major League chance and played in the Atlantic League to stay involved in baseball, while others simply wanted to remain in the game as long as they possibly could. In its six years of existence, the Atlantic League has served as the home for over 260 players who have Major League experience under their belt, 73 in the 2003 season. Out of the 117 players that were sold to Major League Clubs, nearly half (44 percent) were pitchers. This statistic alone is enough to draw in young pitchers and players looking to play baseball for a Major League team. Another 10 percent were catchers, leaving the remaining 36 percent as position players. Nearly one whole team each season have had their contracts sold to a Major League club.
