This combined with an awesome fastball and one of the best split-finger pitches in the game make him a formidable opponent. But he actually spent his first few years playing in Japan's minor leagues, with the highlight being a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics , where he played in one game as a pinch runner. He was selected by the Kintetsu Buffaloes , based in his hometown of Osaka, in the 1989 free-agent draft at the age of 21. After leading the league in wins (18), strikeouts (287), and ERA (2.91), Nomo easily won that season's MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. Over the next five years he compiled a record of 78 wins against 46 losses, leading the league each year in wins and strikouts. Nomo's career has had its ups and downs since he moved to the US to play for the LA Dodgers in 1995. As only the second-ever Japanese player to play in the Major leagues and the first in 30 years, he was the focus of huge media attention, something he was never too fond of. But in addition to helping the Dodgers win the National League West that season, he was named Rookie of the Year and started the All-Star game. A subsequent loss of form and transfers to a string of other teams (

There are two leagues, the Central League and the Pacific League . Each league has six teams who play each other 27 times in the April-October season for a total of 135 games. The winners of each league face one another in the Japan Series in October to decide the championship team. The popularity of the sport tends to ebb and flow with the rise and fall of famous players and the changing fortunes of the Yomiuri Giants , the country's most popular team. Baseball was first introduced to Japan in 1873 at Kaisei Gakko, now Tokyo University. The sport quickly spread among universities and middle schools and became the country's biggest school sport. Today, the two national high school tournaments (the National Invitational Senior High School Baseball Tournament and the All-Japan High School Baseball Championship Tournament) held in spring and summer are hugely popular. Over 4,000 high school teams take part in regional qualifiers. Teams representing each prefecture battle it out at Koshien Stadium , home to the Hanshin Tigers in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture. The tournaments are usually referred to as just 'Koshien' and the whole country gathers around TV's and radios to follow the action. The first professional team was established in 1934 and there were six more teams by the time the first league was set up in 1936. The two-league system was introduced in 1950 and remains little changed today. All twelve teams are sponsored by major corporations, who make occasional changes to the team names.

FOSTERING BASEBALL TALENT:
Major League Star Nomo Founds Amateur Team (July 28, 2003) Dodgers pitcher Hideo Nomo (Jiji) Major League pitcher Nomo Hideo, 34, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has founded an amateur baseball team in Japan called Nomo Baseball Club. With the amount of support provided by companies to thier corporate teams dwindling, amateur and semipro players face an increasingly tough situation. Hoping to give these players some encouragement, Nomo supplied the funds for the new team himself in what could be described as a gesture of putting something back into the world of baseball. This is yet another new challenge for the pioneer who led the recent migration of Japanese players to the Major Leagues.
New Team Based in Nomo's Hometown
The Nomo Baseball Club is based in Nomo's hometown of Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture, where, after graduating from high school, Nomo himself spent three years playing for a corporate team, Nippon Steel Corporation Sakai Works. The world of corporate and amateur baseball has seen a dramatic fall in the number of teams in recent years, as some companies have disbanded their teams as part of their restructuring efforts. While there were once 237 teams, by 2002 this number had fallen to 85. Even Nomo's former team, Nippon Steel Sakai, was forced to suspend activities in 1994. Seeing how young players were losing opportunities to enjoy and improve their baseball, Nomo established a team to give some of them back these chances.

Hideo Nomo August 31 -) is a right-handed pitcher who has achieved success both in Japan and the United States.
Nomo was on the silver medal winning Japanese baseball team at the 1988 Olympics, and the Kintetsu Buffaloes drafted him in 1989. Nomo debuted with them in 1990 and was an immediate success, going 18-8 but more impressively striking out 287 hitters in just 235 innings. The strikeout numbers are attributed to his unorthodox wind-up, where he turns his back to the hitter, raises his pivot leg, and freezes for a second before throwing. The windup gave him the nickname "Tornado". In his first 4 seasons, Nomo was as consistent, and consistently good, as any pitcher in Japanese baseball, winning 17 or 18 games each year. His fifth season in 1994 was marred by a shoulder injury and only netted him 8 wins.

My television set broke last year and I have never bothered to fix it, so these days whenever there is a program I want to watch, I have to go over to a friend's house. It's not often that I invite myself into someone's living room for a television event, but Hideo Nomo's pitching debut for the Boston Red Sox was one of those rare occasions. On April 4th at 7 pm, I drove to Boston to the apartment of my friend Steve. He is a staunch Red Sox fan and didn't need any convincing to tune in to the game. Steve showed me into the living room, and then took his place on the couch next to his roommates, Paul and Michael. I shooed one of Michael's cats off a chair and took a seat for the opening pitch. Chips and beer were laid out on the coffee table. They had all started drinking beer after a long day at work, and their cheeks were pink from the moderate consumption of alcohol. They appeared relaxed, but I was nervous. "You know how good Nomo is, right?" I asked.
