Hideo Nomo - Japanese Baseball Player
Hideo Nomo is a right-handed pitcher who has achieved success both in Japan and the United States. Nomo was on the silver medal winning Japanese baseball team at the 1988 Olympics, and the Kinsetsu Buffaloes drafted him in 1989. Nomo debuted with them in 1990 and was an immediate success, going 18-8 but more impressively striking out 287 hitters in just 235 IP's. The strikeout numbers are attributed to his unorthodox wind-up, where he turns his back to the hitter, raises his pivot leg, and freezes for a second before throwing. The windup gave him the nickname "Tornado". In his first 4 seasons, Nomo was as consistent, and consistently good, as any pitcher in Japanese baseball, winning 17 or 18 games each year. His 5th season in 1994 was marred by a shoulder injury and only netted him 8 wins.

    Nomo Hideo
Date of Birth 31 August 1968 Place of Birth Osaka Nomo Hideo is a pitcher for Los Angeles Dodgers. He is the first Japanese player to play in the American Major Leagues since Masanori Murakami who pitched for the Giants between 1964 and 1965. He wanted to be a professional baseball player ever since he was in elementary school. He learned to play baseball by playing with the other kids. At first, he played in the Japanese Minor Leagues between 1986 and 1989. In 1988, he participated in the Seoul Olympics as an ace pitcher for the Japanese team, and won a silver medal. He joined the Kintetsu Buffaloes of the Japanese Pacific League in 1990. His record was 78 wins and 46 defeats, and he took part in the All-Star game all five of his seasons. He was famous for his strange pitching motion which was called 'Tornado'. In 1995, Nomo burst upon the Major League scene. Though he couldn't win his debut game, he struck out the opponents one after another. He recorded his first Major League victory vs. New York on June 2, and took part in the All-Star game as the starting pitcher of the National League. He thus became very popular among not only Japanese but also Americans. His current record is 13 wins and 6 defeats, which helped The Dodgers to win the National League Western Championship in 1995.

    AMERICA'S PASTIME
    GOES GLOBAL

Since 1995, American baseball experienced a significant influx of players from Japan, predominantly pitchers.
These players are fulfilling their athletic dreams of playing in the American major leagues.
Their arrival into American baseball has hardly gone unnoticed by the fans or the American press.
    Hideo Nomo
In July 1995, a story entitled "Nomomania Grips L.A. and Japan" ran on the Los Angeles Times's front page
It was no secret that Nomo was not satisfied playing professional baseball in Japan,
although he was one of the country's most famous and successful pitchers .
It had always been Nomo's dream to play baseball in the United States. Nomo made American baseball the standard by which international players must measure their skills. After his second major league start, Nomo was quoted as saying, "I'm so glad I got to pitch in a real major league game. This is what I always wanted. My dream was realized"
