He was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2004. Known mostly for his line-drive hitting ability, Molitor's 3319 career hits include 605 doubles and 114 triples. In 1996, he drove in a career-high 113 run and hit just nine home runs. His career high was 22 home runs in a season coming in 1993 and he never hit more than 20 in any other season of his career. When he debuted with Milwaukee in 1978, he was used mainly at second base. As his career developed, he spent time at shortstop, third, some games at first and even some outfield appearances. However, the one dark spot in his otherwise stellar career came in the form of injuries. A number of assorted injuries cost him some 500 games in his 21-year career. Those injuries led to Molitor being shifted to designated hitter. Molitor also displayed excellent speed on the bases. From 1982-1983, he stole 82 bases and was caught just 17 times in the two seasons. His career totals were 504 stole bases and he was caught just 131 times.

Baseball Digest
Feb, 2004 by John Kuenster
SHORTLY AFTER BEING NAMED BATTING COACH FOR THE SEATTLE MARINERS following the 2003 season, Paul Molitor was looking back on his major league career as an active player. "If I had to pick one, highlight year, it probably would be 1993, my first season in Toronto," he said. "I had been with the Brewers for 15 years (1978-1992), and thought maybe I'd finish my career in Milwaukee, but the transition worked out all right and it was nice to be able to put on my resume that I played on a world championship team (1993 Blue Jays)." He didn't mention it, but Molitor was instrumental in the Jays beating the Phillies in the 1993 World Series, hitting an even .500 (12-for-24), playing first base, third base and as a DH, in addition to being named the classic's MVP award winner.

Molitor, Paul Molitor, Paul (1956- ), American professional baseball player, one of the most consistent hitters in major league history. Molitor collected 3,319 hits during his 21-year career, good for ninth place all time when he retired in 1998. Molitor was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1977 and reached the majors a year later. In his second year with the Brewers Molitor posted a .322 batting average, the first of 12 seasons in which he hit .300 or better. In 1982 Molitor led the American League (AL) in runs and had 201 hits for a .302 average. That year he helped lead Milwaukee to the World Series, where the club lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. In 1987 Molitor again led the AL in runs and hit .352, his best average during his career. He finished second to Wade Boggs (.363) in AL batting, however. Despite his success, Molitor never led the league in batting average or won the league most valuable player (MVP) award.
