If you can do that - if you run, hit, run the bases, hit with power, field, throw and do all other things that are part of the game - then you're a good ballplayer. Willie Mays It's not hard. When I'm not hitting, I don't hit nobody. But when I'm hitting, I hit anybody. Willie Mays They throw the ball, I hit it. They hit the ball, I catch it. Career Hitting Record Other Resources Mays brought more than just great skill to the game of baseball. He also brought a rare exuberance and excitement to the sport, prompting Leo Durocher to say, "Willie is without doubt the most dynamic, most dramatic, most fantastic, most exciting performer in action today. He is Joe Louis, Jascha Heifetz, Sammy Davis, and Nashua rolled into one." At sixteen, he was playing for the Birmingham Black Barons. The New York Giants paid $15,000 for his contract in 1950 and gave Mays a $6,000 signing bonus. After a season at the Class B level, he jumped to Minneapolis in the Triple-A American Association, where he batted .477 in the first 35 games of the 1951 season. The Giants then brought him up. Mays went hitless in his first 21 major-league at-bats, but he ended up batting .274 with 20 home runs and 68 RBI in 121 games and fielding sensationally to help win a pennant. Mays missed most of the 1952 season and all of the 1953 season while serving in the Army. He returned in 1954 to help lead the Giants to another pennant, leading the league in hitting with a .345 average, in slugging with a .667 percentage, and in triples with 13. He also had 41 home runs, 110 RBI, and 119 runs scored, won the league's most valuable player award, and was named male athlete of the year by the Associated Press.

Ht: Wt B: T: R Yrs G AB R H HR RBI SB BA Willie Mays was only 16 years old when he entered the world of professional baseball in 1947 with the Negro League's Birmingham Black Barons. That season, Jackie Robinson would break baseball's color barrier and open the door for Mays and every other player who had been denied a shot at Major League Baseball because of skin color. Within 4 years, he would be on his way to establishing himself as one of the greatest players in the games. Mays has been described by writers as a player who approached every game like he was trying to make the team. It was 1950 when the New York Giants sent scout Eddie Montague to spring training in Birmingham to take a look at the Baron's first baseman Alonzo Perry. It wasn't Perry that caught his eye it was Willie Mays. Montague dispatched his scouting report to New York and it included the description, "The greatest ball player I had ever seen in my life." The Giants immediately starting to try to find a way to get Mays into their fold. The Giants weren't the first team to covet Mays. The Braves had been working for near a year and a half, but they had reached an impasse in their discussions with the Barons. The Giants were willing to pay the fee $15,000. The Barons kept $10,000 of that as their fee for providing them with the talented player.

Actually, Willie Mays did both. When Willie Mays joined the New York Giants in 1951, black players were still a rarity in the major leagues. Fee Range:
For 22 seasons, Willie Mays astonished fans and fellow players with his hitting, his running and his unsurpassed fielding. Not only did he play the game with extreme skill, but for most of his 22-year career, he made the game seem like, well, fun. As sportswriter Arthur Daley put it, he "could do everything and do it better than anyone else, (and) with a joyous grace." In the 1950s and '60s, fans couldn't get enough of Willie Mays.
In the first flush of his fame and popularity, he would get up early to play stickball in the street with the worshipful children who gathered in front of his Harlem boarding house. Fans argue to this day about which was the greatest of his many spectacular catches. One thing all baseball lovers agree on: Willie Mays was one of the most versatile, virtuosic players of all time. His position in the history of his sport will last even longer. In baseball, Willie Mays is one of the immortals

Barry Bonds ties Willie Mays for third on baseball's career homer list
an Associated Press report 4/13/04 SAN FRANCISCO - Baseball basher Barry Bonds has sought Willie Mays' approval ever since he was old enough to tag along with his godfather in the San Francisco Giants' clubhouse. Six MVPs, a single-season record 73 home runs, and countless other accomplishments never felt like quite enough. Hitting his 660th homer Monday to tie Mays for third place on the career list has done the trick. "It was like a weight was just lifted off my shoulders," Bonds said. "It's a relief now to be able to stand next to my godfather and finally feel like I've accomplished something in the game of baseball. It was a big way of getting his approval that I've finally done something." Bonds hit a towering three-run shot in the fifth inning, sending the Giants to a 7-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. It was an estimated 442-foot blast. The 39-year-old Bonds was greeted at home base by several teammates and he stepped on the plate, raised both hands in the air and pointed to the sky. Mays, who turns 73 next month, hurried to congratulate Bonds, giving his godson a hug and a kiss outside the dugout. Mays presented him with a torch decorated with 25 tiny diamonds, symbolic of the number Bonds wears. They both carried the torch before the 2002 Olympics.

More Articles Home Willie Mays Is 70 by Harvey Frommer – The month of May was always Willie Mays’ time. Willie Howard Mays was born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama - 69 years ago today. The New York Giants called him up on the 15th of May in 1951 from Minneapolis in the American Association. He was bating .477 after 35 games. Garry Schumacher, publicist for the Giants at that time, recalled the first time he ever saw Mays. “The Giants were on their way from Chicago to Philadelphia to conclude the last three games of a road trip,” Schumacher said. “I was by the front door of the Giants’ office on Times Square. Suddenly, this kid comes in. There were always a lot of kids coming around; some of them wanted tickets and some wanted tryouts. He was carrying a few bats in one hand and a bag in the other that contained his glove and spikes. He was wearing the most unusual cap I ever saw, plaid colored. When I found out who he was, we bought him some clothes and then sent him to Philadelphia to join the club. He was wearing the new clothes when he left, but funny thing - he refused to take off that funny cap. He made his major league debut with the Giants on May 25, 1951. But his start in the majors after just 116 minor leagues games was a shaky one. He was hitless in his first 12 at-bats, cried in the dugout and said, "I am not ready for this". He begged manager Leo Durocher to send him back down to the minors.
