HOWARD ‘WILLIE’ MAYS Born May 6, 1931, Westfield, Ala., both Mays' father and grandfather had been baseball players. Willie, who batted and fielded right-handed, played semiprofessional baseball when he was 16 years old and joined the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League in 1948, playing only on Sunday during the school year. The National League New York Giants paid the Barons for his contract when he graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School in 1950. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Mays went to the Giants in 1951. He became known first for his spectacular leaping and diving catches before he established himself as a hitter. He served in the army (1952-54), and in the 1954 season, when the Giants won the National League pennant and the World Series, Mays led the league in hitting (.345) and had 41 home runs. In 1966 his two-year contract with the Giants (moved to San Francisco in 1958) gave him the highest salary of any baseball player of that time. He was traded to the New York Mets midseason in 1972 and retired after the 1973 season. Late in his career he played in the infield, mainly at first base. His career home run total was 660 and his batting average .302. He led the league in home runs in 1955, 1962, and 1964-65.

Willie Mays on Miraloma Drive
by Steve W. LaBounty
August 2000 The most popular feature of the San Francisco Giants cozy new home, may not actually be inside the brick and iron walls. Before each game the ocean of fans that flow into the front gate of Pacific Bell Park make an eddy around a magnificent bronze statue of baseball's greatest living player, Willie Mays. The spot is a meeting place, an informal will-call for friends. Of the many people that pose for photos in front of the statue, most appear stiffer than the inanimate Mays. Willie is portrayed post-swing, smiling at another shot into the gap, leaning for a sprint around imaginary bases. In the broad, redbrick Willie Mays plaza the graceful monument has a perfect home. The real Willie Mays had a more difficult time finding a home in 1957 San Francisco.
Real Estate and Race
San Francisco had won the Giants away from their birthplace of New York, and the team was preparing to move into cozy Seals Stadium for the 1958 season. The star center fielder also started his preparations, by house hunting with his wife Marghuerite.

Willie Howard Mays. Ted Williams said, "They invented the All-Star Game for him." Tony Kubek put it more directly: "The best that ever played this game." From his rookie season in 1951 to his retirement in 1973, no one played baseball with such an all-around assortment of offensive and defensive skills as the "Say Hey Kid." Perhaps, as Kubek suggests, no one ever has. Mays was the quintessential "natural." He hit for power, his 660 home runs place him third on the all-time list. He led the league in slugging five times. Willie won the batting tide in 1954 and had a lifetime batting average of .302. He ran the bases with speed and grace, leading the league in steals four times. Mays played more games in centerfield than anyone in the history of the game. His flat-out-running, over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz' drive in Game One of the 1954 World Series is known simply as "The Catch" and is only one example of the of the day-in day-out excellence of his defensive play. But what really set Willie apart from his peers was the irresistible, unrelenting exuberance he brought to the ballpark. Negro League star Buck O'Neil once said, "There is nothing greater for a human being than to get his body to react to all the things one does on a ball field...It fills you up."

    The Next Willie Mays
By Robert Nishihara The burden of expectation can crush a baseball player.  The burden of becoming the next Willie Mays takes the "can" out of the aforementioned equation.  The legacy of the "Say Hey Kid" has taken on a life of its own, devouring all comparisons and players that get caught up in its vortex. Yet, there have been those willing to subject players to that unreasonable level of scrutiny. And the very first man to have to shoulder that burden was Mays' teammate and good friend, Bobby Bonds. Because he was the marquee outfielder on the San Francisco Giants after Willie Mays retired and because he possessed an impressive array of athletic skills, the comparisons came rolling ominously and inevitably his way. He ran with the power and fluidity of a sprinter.  His arm was strong and accurate.  He made plays in the field instinctively.  At the plate, his great speed brought him to the leadoff spot but he also possessed the power of a clean-up hitter.  He made his major league debut just after his 22nd birthday and, six seasons later, came within a single home run of becoming the first 40-40 man in baseball history. And it wasn't good enough.
