To begin with let's talk about your childhood in Alabama. What was it like being black when you were growing up? The same as being black right now. I don't think that's different.
In Birmingham at that time, everything was segregated: the movies, the restaurants, and different things. video audio broadband And you had the bathrooms that had "colored" and "white" on it, and all that kind of junk. So you knew exactly what was going on, but you couldn't do anything about it at that particular time. So I think it affected a lot of people at that time coming along. I guess they had to accept what was going on, they couldn't do too much about it. In my home town, Fairfield, we used to play football and baseball together. They would stop us from playing. When I was about 12 years old we used to go down on the field and play football, and about 3 or 4 o'clock an officer would come down and break us up. We'd go our separate ways. There had to be some anger.

    Willie Mays
Baseball Hall of Fame BIOGRAPHY b. May 6, 1931
When Willie Mays was a little boy in Alabama, few might have imagined that the young boy playing sandlot ball would become a world-famous star athlete. One who did imagine it was the boy's father. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mays were athletic. Mr. Mays played baseball on the all-black teams of the segregated south, as had his father before him. Mrs. Mays had been a champion sprinter in her school. When Willie was growing up, his father worked in a steel mill, and played on a semi- professional team sponsored by the mill. He began teaching Willie to catch a ball even before he could walk. By 14, Willie joined his father on the mill team. His high school had no baseball team, so he played basketball and football, but before he finished high school, it became clear that baseball would be his career. Willie Mays began his professional career at age 16, playing with the Birmingham Black Barons in the segregated Negro Southern League. While his father avidly supported Willie's ambition to be a professional ball player, he also insisted his son finish high school. In his first year with the Barons, Willie was restricted to playing home games so he wouldn't miss school. The day he graduated from high school, he was signed by the New York Giants. First, the Giants sent Mays to their Class B farm team in Trenton, New Jersey, but he quickly advanced to their AAA farm club, the Minneapolis Millers. He was only 20 in 1951, when he received the phone call to join the Giants at the Polo Grounds in New York City.

, baseball player with the New York Giants (1951-1957), San Francisco Giants (1958-1971), and New York Mets (1972-1973). Mays is almost universally regarded as one of the half dozen or so greatest baseball players of all time. Among all the ball players who ever played in the major leagues, Mays ranked third in number of home runs, fifth in runs scored, seventh in runs batted in, and tenth in slugging percentage, as of the end of the 1989 season. But statistics alone do not begin to tell the story of his greatness. One had to see him play. Mays, who was born to a black working-class family in Alabama, was a baseball prodigy. On finishing high school, he joined the formidable Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League. In 1950 the New York Giants signed him to play with their minor league Trenton club. When, during the following season with Minneapolis in the Triple A American Association, Mays was hitting a startling .477, the Giants called him up to play center field during their pennant-winning year of 1951. After returning from army service in time for the 1954 season, Mays proceeded regularly to climb walls in the outfield, score from first base on singles, hit with awesome power, and do those things that rightly earned him the title, the Amazing Mays. The astute baseball executive Branch Rickey, sportswriters like Dan Daniel and Leonard Koppett, and the leading managers and players of the past sixty years regarded Mays as peerless. Ted Williams once said that they invented baseball for Willie Mays. Certainly he played with a zest and enthusiasm that distinguished him from other great stars, who demonstrated their skills in a more subdued, methodical manner. Fans delighted in the sight of Mays running out from under his cap, whether pursuing a ball hit to the outfield or tearing around the bases, and they cheered happily as he made his unique "basket catch" of routine fly balls. Few players so palpably manifested their joy in the game as did Mays. And he did so not by overt gestures or facial expressions but by his every move.

Mays brought joy to baseball
By Larry Schwartz

The 20-year-old kid with the bright, boyish smile entered the majors tentatively, like a child peeking into a forbidden room. But he soon realized that he did indeed belong, that he wasn't an interloper. Not only did he play the game with extreme skill, but for most of his 22-year career, he made the game seem like, well, fun. The Say Hey Kid mastered the five fundamentals of baseball. There always was something fresh and pleasurable in his performance. Making a glove-thumping basket catch or a whirling throw in centerfield, losing his hat running the bases or swinging from his heels at the plate, Willie Mays played with an irresistible, unrelenting exuberance. "I can never understand how some players are always talking about baseball being hard work," Mays said during his first decade in the game. "To me, it's always been a pleasure, even when I feel sort of draggy after a doubleheader." It's like Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella said, "You gotta be a man to play baseball for a living, but you gotta have a lot of little boy in you, too."
