BIOGRAPHY
Christy Mathewson was a college man, with a range of interests, who mowed down opposing hitters in his spare time. While at Bucknell University, Mathewson sang in the glee club, belonged to a literary society, played football and served as a model of clean living. On top of these achievements, Mathewson also wrote a series of children's books. In a time when baseball was known for hard-living, hard-drinking baseball players, there was Christy Mathewson to prove that there was another way for athletes to live. He was the role model after whom every parent wanted their children to shape their lives.
On the mound, Mathewson was a fierce competitor who became arguably the most dominating pitcher of all time. During his illustrious 17-year career, he led the league in wins four times, won five strikeout titles, won 30 or more games four times, pitched four shutouts and ten complete games in World Series competition, and won 373 games in his career.
In 1936, he joined Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson as the first class of baseball Hall of Famers.

    Book Reviews

Reading a book like Pitching in the Pinch will stir an earnest yearning in my heart. It is Christy Mathewsons ghostwritten account of his career in major league baseball. It is a classic work of baseball writing. Mathewson was a 373 game winner in his career and had a lot of great thoughts on the game. He shares insight into John McGraws management skill and he delves into the psychology of the game. You can learn a lot about Americas past-time before Babe Ruth revolutionized the game. This is a highly entertaining and educational book.

    All America Teams
Count appearances on Deadball Era all-star teams . Several summary counts supplement this introduction and annual listing. Baseball Magazine began publication as a monthly in May 1908. Soon after the baseball season ended, the November issue (vol. 2, no. 1) included a one-page article, "All-Star League Teams" (1908) . That seminal article listed "All-American League", "All-National League", and "All America" teams under the line, "Following are the All-Star team selections of The Baseball Magazine Every year 1908 to 1950, BBMag selected the two league teams and one "All America" team. The selections were unattributed 1908-10, then attributed to F.C. Lane, 1911-37, and Dan Daniels, 1938-50. Here the annual AL and NL teams are listed explicitly and the annual "All America" team is identified by bold face in the league listings. For 1913 only, there is a second team from each league. Every team comprises one player each at positions 1B, 2B, SS, and 3B, and three Outfielders; that is, seven players for seven regular positions. The 1908-1911 teams name one man at outfield positions LF, CF, and RF, but the man did not generally play the position. Beginning in 1912, every team simply names three outfielders. Here, the men who regularly played centerfield are marked "[cf]". The "battery" of pitchers and catchers is variable: 1908 2 catchers, 5 pitchers 1909 3 catchers, 5 pitchers 1910 2 catchers, 5 pitchers (3 pitchers on each league team) 1911 4 catchers, 6 pitchers (4-5 pitchers on the league teams) 1912 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1913 1 catcher, 2 pitchers (same on the league second teams) 1914 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1915-19 1 catcher, 2 pitchers

With the game in hand, Christy leaves after eight innings, and his brother Henry makes his ML debut. Henry Mathewson allows an unearned run in the 9th and the Giants win, 8-2. October 5, 1906 : The Giants give Christy Mathewson 's brother Henry a starting chance against Boston and he promptly puts his name in the record books. Henry establishes a modern NL record by walking 14. He also hits one batter, allows just five hits, but completes the 7-1 loss. He'll pitch another inning next year, but this is his only ML decision. Matty Leads The Giants To Their First Ever Win In San Francisco
by James E. Elfers   James has recently written a book on the 1913 World Tour featuring the White Sox and Giants. For more information see The Tour to End All Tours Christy Mathewson's arm was gone long before the ides of November. A matchless   1913 season, a World Series win, and touring with the Giants and White Sox everyday   since October 18, had left the Big Six with little of his legendary dazzle. Matty, however   definitely wanted to win this game. Unknown to the crowd of 10,000 crammed into   Recreation Park, his best friend and manager John McGraw, and perhaps even to his wife   Jane, this would be Matty's last appearance with the tour. For his finale Mathewson turned in one of his best performances of the tour.   The grueling transcontinental jaunt across he country by America's two most popular   baseball teams was an unprecedented spectacle. The endless rounds of train travel, sell   out crowds, buffets, handshakes and sport had worn everyone down,  especially the pitchers. Wins had been scarce for the Big Six throughout the tour, the Sox had taken a   perverse delight in teeing off on Matty, and he wanted to level the scales a bit on this   beautiful Saturday afternoon.
