Christy Mathewson
Christopher Mathewson , born August 12 in Factoryville, Pennsylvania United States - died October 7 in Saranac Lake, New York , was a Major League Baseball pitcher. Born into a wealthy family, Mathewson attended Bucknell University , but immediately after graduation signed with the New York Giants . Extremely intelligent, he was a master checkers player and once defeated the World checkers champion. The dominant pitcher of his era, Christy Mathewson won more than 20 games for twelve straight years, including winning 30 or more games for three seasons in a row between 1903 and 1905. In 1908 he won 37 games, a National League record that still stands. During his illustrious 17-year career, Mathewson won 373 games, of which 79 were shutouts, while losing only 188 with an astonishingly low career ERA of 2.13. He had outstanding control, striking out 2,502 batters while walking only 844. He pitched in four World Series , his team winning it in 1905 when he won three games by shutout. In 1916 he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds , where he won the only game he pitched before becoming the team's manager.

CHRISTY MATHEWSON
New York City has a rich baseball history. In the 20th Century, four teams have been based in the nation's largest city. Thousands of ballplayers have worn the uniforms of either the New York Giants, the New York Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers, or the New York Mets. Of these thousands of players, a select few, a relative handful, have reached the pinnacle of fame and won the hearts of this most demanding city. But fame can be fleeting. Players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are still revered many years after their deaths, in no small measure due to the fact that the team they played for still exists and is still thriving. Christy Mathewson, on the other hand, has not fared nearly as well. Before Ruth joined the Yankees in 1921 and forever changed the game of baseball, the Giants were easily New York's dominant team, and Christy Mathewson was their shining star. Mathewson shared the spotlight with his manager, John McGraw. McGraw and Mathewson, however, could be called polar opposites. The public saw Mathewson as the prototypical gentleman athlete, a college man who lived an exemplary life both on and off the field. He was what we would today call "a good role model." McGraw, though, was coarse, ill tempered, and driven. He had unprecedented success as a manager, and New Yorkers came to appreciate the genius he displayed from the dugout. Between them, Mathewson and McGraw personified the New York Giants. They were world famous, and they lived in an era before radio and television, when worldwide fame was much more difficult to achieve.

HOW "MATTY" BECAME A PITCHER
From The Literary Digest , May 11, 1912 "We want to see what you've got," said he. Most of the baseball population of the town gathered to see me get my try-out, and I pitched for two hours, while the critics stood around and watched me closely, to discover what I could do. They sent their best batters up to face the curves I was throwing, and I was "putting everything I had on the ball." After a full hour's dress rehearsal, and when, at last, I "fanned" out the captain of the team, he came up, slapped me on the back, and said: "You'll do. We want you to pitch this afternoon." That, I am sure, was the very proudest day of my life. We had to drive ten miles to the opponents' town, and all the other boys watched me leave with the men. And you can imagine my pride while I watched them , as they stood on one foot and then the other, nudging one another and saying, "'Husk' is going to play with the men!" They called me "Husk" in those days. It was a big jump upward for me, and I would hardly look at the other youngsters as I climbed into the carriage with the captain. If the full truth were told, however, I felt almost "all in" after the hard session I had been through in the morning.

Drama Explores Rich Life of a Baseball Hero:
The Giants' Christy Mathewson helped turn baseball into a national pastime

How many of today's young sport fans remember who Christy Mathewson was? Probably not many. And it's a shame. Mathewson was not only a baseball hero, who pitched for the New York Giants early in the century, but he was a man who made an impression on Americans way beyond the outfield walls.
Director Kerrigan Mahan didn't know who Mathewson was when he became involved in Eddie Frierson's one-man play, "MattyAn Evening With Christy Mathewson," opening on Saturday at Studio City's Two Roads Theatre.
Baseball isn't his sport. But theater is, and he has since become fascinated with Mathewson, the man. "He was such a huge star that he was considered one of the finest pitchers in baseball history," Mahan says. "There's so much theater here."
Baseball is Frierson's sport. He pitched baseball for the UCLA Bruins while he was working on a theater arts degree, and later coached baseball for Santa Monica High School, four of those years as varsity head coach. At the same time, he was establishing himself as an actor on television and stage, and working as a voice-over actor, where he originally met Mahan.

Profile: Christy Mathewson, "The Big Six"
I n 1900, a young man named Christy Mathewson left Bucknell College in Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the glee club, and headed south for a chance to play professional baseball. After winning 21 games with Norfolk in the minor leagues, he joined the New York Giants. Mathewson promptly lost three games and was sent back down to the minors. The Reds drafted him at the end the season but then traded him to the Giants for Amos Rusie. This trade has been characterized as "probably the worst in the history of baseball". Rusie would not win another game. Mathewson would pitch a no-hitter in his first year and became one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball. The rise of Christy Mathewson to greatness during those infant years of major league baseball was a major reason the Giants rose out of the doldrums and became one of the most successful teams in baseball. Prior to Mathewson's rookie year of 1901, the Giants had struggled for respectability in the nation's largest city. From their first year of existence in 1883 to 1902, they were mostly a second division team. With the arrival of Mathewson and the fiery manager John McGraw in 1902 who brought in quality players, came the turnaround they fans so feverishly desired. In 1901, Mathewson got off to a great start in his rookie year, winning 20 games and pitching a no-hitter. When the next season started, the Giants manager at the time, for some strange reason, tried to convert Mathewson from pitcher to first baseman. Thank goodness John McGraw came along and he had the good sense to leave Mathewson alone. McGraw brought in the talent he needed and along with Mathewson's 35 wins, the Giants had their first pennant.

  • Erected: Unknown
As I whizzed down Route 6 toward Scranton one afternoon, I passed this marker for Christy Mathewson on the side of the road. “Big Six”, so-called for his six-foot stature, broke in with the New York Giants of the National League in 1901 and promptly became one of the game’s most dominating pitchers. In the 1905 World Series, he pitched three of the five games and won all three by shutout. Mathewson’s career ended when he entered military service in 1917, upon the United States’ entry into the first World War. His wartime service incapacitated him, but he came home not only a war hero, but a baseball figure respected for his candor as well as his ability. In commentaries he wrote for a newspaper syndicate during the 1919 World Series, he observed that all was not on the level. The next year, it was revealed that several of the White Sox had conspired to throw the Series to the Cincinnati Reds, who won 5 games to 3. Mathewson died of his service-related illness at age 45, long before he could be honored with induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Out to the Ballgame
The Curse of Christy Mathewson
The first great pitcher in history was a Giant. Since his departure, such aces have been scarce. By Jmar Gambol. Home Index The Giants are cursed. No, I'm not talking about their forty-seven-year championship drought. The Cubs, the Indians, the Red Sox, let them go first, they've suffered longer and deeper (those poor Red Sox!). The championship drought in San Francisco has been dubbed "The Curse of Sal Maglie" by a local sportswriter and it's not my concern here. The curse I'm talking about is something subtler than not winning any World Series since 1954, although it certainly is a factor in that failure. It's the longstanding absence from the team of legendary pitchers. I call it the curse of Christy Mathewson. Not that Matty ever wished ill upon the team he brought to glory. Mathewson was, if anything, a gentleman, but first he was one of the greatest pitchers of all time, the first true national baseball superstar, with the classic beauty of a Greek god and the skill to match, one of the so-called first five immortals of the Hall of Fame. Acclaimed author Roger Kahn, in his book The Head Game, submits a proudly subjective list of the greatest pitchers of all time. Christy Mathewson tops his list, for what Kahn calls "his matchless gamesman's mind." He could learn any pitch and work it into his repertoire and create an whirlwind of pure untouchability; his object, the defeat the man in the box, and he was fully conscious of his power when on a pitcher's mound. Kahn spends a couple of chapters of The Head Game waxing poetic about Mathewson, the greatest of Giant pitchers. And Kahn a Dodger fan!

Pitching in a Pinch or Baseball from the Inside
Written by Christy Mathewson Eric Rolfe Greenberg
Published by Univ of Nebraska Pr (November 2002)
ISBN 0803282125
Price $30.00
Book Description One of baseball's more enduring classics and earliest memoirs, Christy Mathewson's primer, first published in 1912, has also become one of the game's foremost anthropologies. Mathewson was one of baseball's first immortals: he was a star on the field, winning 373 games between 1900 and 1916all but one as a Giant; an educated gentleman off the field; and a legitimate war hero who died from the effects of being gassed in World War I. Pitching in a Pinch passes on Mathewson's substantial knowledge of the game in general, and the intricacies of the mound in particular. The book's continuing delight and value rests in Mathewson's facility for capturingfrom the insidethe game's ethos in the early 20th century, and the generous combination of anecdote and insight with which he shares it. Customer Reviews What an amazing read. It makes you realize that not much has changed since Mathewson once ruled the roost on the pitching mound. The things he say, the wisdom of experience he imparts sounds so fresh, so immediately relevant to the game as it is played today that it might as well have been written yesterday.Particularly impressive is the idea that there are pitchers who are fabulous when there are no runners on base, but once the pinch is on (hence the title of the book) they become tentative shrinking violets. The pinch, Mathewson writes, is the true test of a pitcher's character. How right he is, in this true baseball classic. A must read for all who love the game.
