Customer Reviews The Player: Christy Mathewson, Baseball, and the American Century Not very deep
This book is a decent read but it is less a biography of Mathewson than it is a commentary on the times and events that he lived through. I had hoped to learn about who Christy Mathewson was and what made him so great and instead I felt like I read an overview of the major events in baseball and history during the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. Decent but too broad As a fan of baseball history, I have been looking for a modern, definitive biography of Christy Mathewson ever since I grew to admire him many years ago. I was hoping that Philip Seib's The Player would be that elusive work, but I was wrong. Although it covers the major events of Matty's life, Seib works very hard to put him in context as the first major baseball star and the times that he lived in, so what we're left with is less of a biography and more of a social history. This is all well and good, and the premise is an interesting one, except that Seib doesn't take it far enough and when he tries to expound on his theory, he ends up giving more info on other figures of the times like Billy Sunday and Woodrow Wilson than on Mathewson.

Career Pitching Record Other Resources In an era when the public perceived major league players as tough, brawling, hard-drinking, profane ruffians, Mathewson was the All-American boy. Well-dressed and clean-cut, he had starred in baseball, basketball and football at Bucknell University, where he was class president and a member of the glee club and literary society. Grantland Rice once wrote of Mathewson, "He handed the game a certain. . . indefinable lift in culture, brains, personality." Mathewson dropped out of college to play professional baseball in 1899. A right-handed pitcher, he developed a pitch called the "reverse curve" or "fadeaway," now usually known as the "screwball," a pitch that breaks in on a right-handed hitter rather than away from him. Later in his career, he came up with another unusual pitch that he called a "dry spitter," which was probably a knuckleball. He joined the NL's New York Giants during the 1900 season and had an 0-3 record before being sent back down to the minor leagues. But he was back to stay in 1901 and, during the next 14 seasons, he won 20 or more games 13 times and 30 or more 4 times.

The career of Christy Mathewson
Christy Mathewson was a man idolized by Americans in the early 20th century. Here is the career of one of the greatest pitchers and greatest men baseball has ever seen.
Christy Mathewson, born in 1880, was as great of a person off the field as he was a player on the field. A very intelligent, educated, extremely nice gentleman, Matty began his career with the New York Giants in 1899. After one season, he was drafted for $100 by the Cincinnati Reds, but would soon return to the Giants where his career would take off. bodyOffer(18183) From 1903-1914, Matty recorded 12 consecutive seasons of 20 or more victories. In four of those seasons, he won over 30 games including 37 wins in 1908. By 1912, he already had 300 career victories. During this time, he picked up the nickname Big Six. There are numerous theories on where he got the nickname, though one of the most popular comes from his intimidating height - over six feet tall - a rarity for players back then. While Matty was a great pitcher during the regular season, he was even more spectacular in the World Series. In his first World Series in 1905, he posted the greatest World Series ever by a pitcher, throwing three consecutive complete game shutouts against the Philadelphia Athletics. And while he won only two games and lost five in his last three World Series (1911-1913), the Giants scored only seven runs in the last 39 innings Matty pitched.

Christy Mathewson's Orders to Report for WWI Christy Mathewson was born 1880, Factoryville, PA and died in 1925, Saranac Lake, NY. He pitched from 1900 to 1916, and is tied with Grover Cleveland Alexander as the winningest pitcher in the National League history with 373 victories (third all-time). He had a .665 winning percentage (seventh all-time) and a 2.13 ERA (fifth all-time). In World Series play, he started 11 games (second all-time) and completed 10 (first all-time). In the 1905 World Series, he shut out Philadelphia A's three times in the course of five afternoons. While working in a chemical lab in France during World War l, Christy was expose to poisonous gas that severely damaged his lungs. In 1925, at the age of 45, he contracted tuberculosis, a direct result of his exposure to chemicals. These are Mathewson's orders to report for the great war that ultimately took his life, seven years after war's end. Text on the order above reads as follows: "CONFIDENTIAL.

"Conceit and overconfidence are the worst enemies a ballplayer has. Do not let them turn your head. Be humble and gentle and kind." —Christy Mathewson A model pitcher, baseball legend Christy Mathewson was also a model American. In The Player: Christy Mathewson, Baseball, and the American Century, author Philip Seib rediscovers baseball's first superstar to show how Mathewson not only mirrored the hopes and ideals of his America, but how he influenced it. The Player follows Mathewson's rise from humble beginnings in Factoryville, Pennsylvania, to his debut as a pitcher for the New York Giants in 1900; from his role in the war effort as a captain in the army's Chemical Warfare Service to his role as a coach and an ambassador for the game he helped popularize. Along the way, Mathewson wrote a series of popular children's books and started an insurance company. He still ranks among all-time leaders in wins, earned run average, and shutouts, and was among the first group of five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Player is also a While Mathewson is remembered for his skill as a pitcher, he is most remembered for the integrity he brought to a game that before him was considered disreputable. Although he played the hero to Hal Chase's villain, Mathewson's optimism was not shattered by the Black Sox scandal, and his good-natured view has stood the test of time.

Ray Robinson does a fine job depicting one of baseball's greatest pitchers from Christy's grand beginnings to his unfortunate plight in the end. The book gives a fair amount of detail about the game's first national idol but lacks punch because of the mostly serene nature of "BIG 6's" life. To the extent that the book is kind of fluffy for its depiction of a man who is nearly perfect-save for incidences like his punching a vendor during a melee-it is almost Rockyesque in that one cannot help but wish they... more info Please don't just fadeaway...:

H W B T : R YR W L G SV IP SO ERA When Christy Mathewson retired from his playing career, he was one of baseball's immortals in the area of pitching. One of the original five entrants into the Hall of Fame, Mathewson finished with 372 wins and a 2.13 earned run average. Mathewson was the original boy scout, a clean-cut player with blond hair and blue eyes. Born into a farming family, Mathewson attended Bucknell University, where he was class president. He also played on the football team as a placekicker and was a star pitcher on the baseball team. In 1889, he joined Taunton (New England League) as a pitcher. He went to Norfolk (Virginia League) the following year and finished with a 20-2 record. The record caught the attention of the New York Giants. They purchased Mathewson's contract for $1,500. Mathewson, however, drew the ire of the Giants when he lose his first three games and posted a 5.08 earned run average. The Giants sent him back to Norfolk, declared the deal dead and demanded their money back. In another career twist, Mathewson was drafted by the Reds who paid $100 for him and then traded him to the Giants for Amos Rusie. John T. Bush, who owned the Reds, was on the verge of purchasing the Giants and he wanted to make sure the team had a promising young pitcher.

Take a Lesson from Baseball
Ty Cobb and 'the Christian Gentleman'
It is a commonplace in American society that you can learn a lot about life from sports: teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and so on. No sport has been more integral to American society than baseball. While watching the recent telecast of Ken Burns' PBS documentary, "Baseball," I was struck by the stories of two of the most famous ballplayers of all time: Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. Cobb and Mathewson both began playing ball around the turn of the century. Tyrus Cobb had a rough childhood and grew up to be competitive in the extreme. According to one story, Cobb was once sharing accomodations with another player. It was his practice to return home before his roommate and take a bath. One day, Cobb's roomate arrived home first and got in the bathtub. Cobb insisted that the roomate get out of the bath and let him have it. "Don't you know?" he said. "I have to be first!" This "me-first" attitude characterized Ty Cobb's career and no doubt helped make him the great ballplayer he was. Observers concluded that Cobb had no great natural talent, but became great through supreme effort and uncompromising competitiveness. Unfortunately, Cobb's attitude won him no friends. He openly insulted other players, including his own teammates. He was not "liked" by anybody, only respected for his performance on the field. He played only for himself, not for any higher purpose.
