Player Profile: Sandy Koufax
Name: Sanford "Sandy" Koufax Left-handed pitcher Lived: Career span: Hall of Fame? Yes (1972) Primary teams: Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (entire career) Best Year: 1963 : 25 wins, 1.88 ERA, 306 K Major Awards: MVP: 1963; Cy Young Award: 1963,1965,1966; World Series MVP: 1963, 1965 Rank on Greatest Players list Player notes : For a five year period (1962-1966), Koufax was as dominant a pitcher as baseball has ever seen. During that period he won three Cy Young Awards, one MVP Award, and two World Series MVP Awards while leading the Dodgers to three National League Pennants and two World Championships. He combined with the late Don Drysdale to form one of the most feared pitching tandems in baseball history. This period of greatness came after six years of struggle to rise above being a .500 pitcher. Once he got going, though, he achieved a level of greatness rarely seen in a pitcher. For most of his career he was pitching in great pain, however, and after a stellar season in 1966 Koufax became that rare player who retired at the top of his game.

Sandy Koufax: A Baseball Legend
by Seymour "Sy" Brody Sanford "Sandy" Koufax, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, was referred to as the "man with the golden arm." He established one record after another as he went through an 11-year career as a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Koufax was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Evelyn and Jack Braun. His mother divorced his father when he was young and remarried Irving Koufax, a lawyer who played an important role in raising Sandy and his stepsister, Edith. He took the children to the Yiddish theater in New York City and he was very supportive of Sandy's participation in baseball and basketball in Brooklyn's Lafayette High School. Koufax, who loved to play basketball, was constantly at the Jewish Community Center shooting baskets or playing with a team. When he was 15, he pitched for a team in the Baseball Ice Cream League, where baseball scouts watched him with great interest. After completing high school in 1952, he went on a basketball scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. However, the baseball scouts were still after him and finally he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. The first three years were hectic for Koufax, who had trouble controlling his fast ball. At times, he would walk two or three batters before getting the next man out.

Outing gets another inning
BY MICHAEL BRONSKI
On one level, it’s hard to see what all the fuss is about. So the New York Post ran a blind item in its " Page Six " gossip column implying that baseball legend Sandy Koufax was gay. The December 19 squib noted that a " Hall of Fame baseball hero " had " cooperated with a best-selling biography only because the author promised to keep it secret that he is gay. The author kept her word, but big mouths at the publishing house can’t keep from flapping. " Since Jane Leavy’s Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy (HarperCollins), published in September, had graced bestseller lists over Christmas, it seemed pretty clear that the gossip was about Koufax. Amazingly, no one much noticed it until Koufax himself expressed outrage nearly two months after the fact when he cited the Post item as the sole reason why he would refuse to attend spring training in Dodgertown this year, or even to attend games at Dodger Stadium. The reason? Both the Dodgers and the Post are owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Speaking through Derrick Hall, a close friend and Dodgers senior vice-president, Koufax claimed he would " feel foolish to be associated with or promote one entity [owned by Murdoch] if it helps another. " (In this age of media conglomeration, taking this tack gets sticky, since Murdoch also owns HarperCollins, which published Koufax’s biography.)

67. Koufax And Yom Kippur
But old hurts still surface. Hearing him praise koufax, I couldn t hold myself back. But didn’t sandy koufax play baseball on Shabbos? My father responded

by Sandor Slomovits On October 6, 1965, Sandy Koufax, the overpowering lefty for the Los Angeles Dodgers, did not pitch in the first game of the World Series against the Minnesota Twins because it fell on Yom Kippur.
My father was not a baseball fan. We had emigrated to the US only six years before. He was 55 and still struggling to learn English and other new skills, like driving a car. Baseball was not his priority. He didn't know a home run from a rerun, a base hit from a facelift, and couldn't care less.
"It's a stupid game," he announced in his thick accent after watching a few minutes on TV. "Not like football. That's a game!" My father was referring to soccer, calling it as it is known throughout the world, not American football, which he also thought idiotic.
But then, Sandy Koufax refused to pitch the first game of the World Series. Sandy Koufax went to shul that day. He fasted. To my father, baseball was still stupid, but all of a sudden, not all the players were stupid. Sandy Koufax didn’t hide his Judaism, and my father, among many Jews, was proud of him. "He's a good Jewish boy," my father said. His highest praise.
Our coaches were puzzled too. "But Arnie Steinberg (not his real name) is Jewish and he can run on Saturdays. How come you can't?" No answer seemed right. It would have felt dishonest to say, "Because we're more religious." I didn't feel very religious. Besides, it would have put down Arnie and the other Jewish kids. I also sure didn't want to quote my father's, "Because you're the Cantor's sons." It might have made sense to the coaches, but made little sense to me.

MEMO KOUFAX: SEE CRUISE
Let me start by saying that you have no idea how much I love baseball. Not only that, I have lived and breathed the Dodgers since the mid-60s, whch, needless to say, included a very excellent pitcher named Sandy Koufax. In fact, it was his exploits, mentioned in a comic strip, read to me by my father, that started me on my path of baseball, and Dodger baseball, fandom. Sandy Koufax, who refused to make a start during a World Series game scheduled on Yom Kippur, the holiest of Jewish holidays. A role model to so many, and in so many ways. To this day I still live and breathe each season, and participate in many a baseball "fantasy" league so that I might totally saturate myself with baseball while there is baseball to enjoy. Imagine my dismay then when I first read that Sandy Koufax was severing all ties with the Dodger organization, an organization with which he had been involved for almost 50 years. "What could they have done!?" I asked myself.

The Bert Alert The results of Neal Traven's 2004 Internet Hall of Fame vote are in. Traven, who is the co-chair of the Statistical Analysis Committee of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), has been conducting a HOF vote online since 1991. As shown below, the Internet voters and the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) agree that Dennis Eckersley and Paul Molitor are worthy of enshrinement in Cooperstown. The two factions have not differed all that much over the past 12 years, seeing eye-to-eye on 14 of the 17 honorees. The Internet voters did not view Don Sutton Tony Perez , and Kirby Puckett as deserving choices, and they saw fit to add

All-Time Allstars - Sandy Koufax
By Geyv Kathoke - February 7 2003
Lethal lefthanders have been among the best pitchers in the business. You only have to look in the Major Leagues today, and you come up with Randy Johnson, David Wells and John Rocker. Sandy Koufax was perhaps the greatest of them all.
Sandy Koufax was brought up by the Dodgers in 1955 at the tender age of 19. His first five years, spanning the move of the Dodgers to LA, were unremarkable. A combined 36-40 record and a 4.09 ERA gave little warning of what was to come. Then as if from nowhere Koufax found his groove. From 1961 thru 1966 he went 109-47, his ERA dropped to an astounding 2.24. During that period he went to the World Series four times and pitched 8 games, he went the full distance in four of those games, had a 4-3 record and a, wait for it, 0.95 ERA. In the period of 1961-1965 he pitched a no hitter in each of those seasons. Only Nolan Ryan has pitched no hitters in 3 consecutive seasons. Only two other pitchers in the whole of the 20th Century have done it in back to back seasons, Warren Spahn and Steve Busby. Then, as quickly as it started it was over. The degenerative athritis in his left elbow that had sent him to the Disabled List in 1964 became too much to bear. He announced his decision to retire after the 1966 season. No other pitcher has retired after a 20-win season, Koufax won 27 in his last year. No-one else has retired after a 200 strikeout season, Koufax struck out 316 in his swansong. In the year that became his last, he lead the Major leagues in ERA by a quarter run per nine innings, and the National League by half a run.
