Koufax reunites with Coach Jucker
by John Bach Only a handful in the sold-out Shoemaker Center even knew he was there. Hall-of-Fame left-hander Sandy Koufax did not want any special attention.
He just wanted to be one of the guys. No interviews. Just one of the fellas who had the privilege of playing baseball under coach Ed Jucker at UC. Those were the conditions in which Koufax, a three-time Cy Young award winner, agreed to return to UC, a campus he had not visited since leaving for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954.
And so, when UC retired the jersey of coach Jucker during halftime ceremonies of the Feb. 13 men's basketball game, Koufax, 64, strolled onto the court with his teammates. His name was never mentioned.
Although it had been 47 years, this was not the first time Koufax and Jucker shared a UC basketball court. Oddly enough, Koufax came to UC to fulfill a basketball scholarship. It just so happened that Jucker coached freshman basketball, as well as varsity baseball.
"I didn't even know he could pitch," Jucker said. "At the end of the basketball season, he told me to come over to the gym to take a look at him.

CONVERSATION: LEFTY'S LEGACY
October 21, 2002
Media correspondent Terence Smith interviews Jane Leavy about her new book on baseball legend Sandy Koufax.
TERENCE SMITH: On September 9, 1965, Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw a perfect game. 27 men came up to bat; 27 men went down no runs, hits, walks, or men on base. The Dodgers beat the Cubs 1-0, and would go on to take the World Series. It was Koufax's fourth no- hitter, a feat which cemented his place as the greatest pitcher of his era, and, some would argue, of all time. The famously reclusive Dodger is captured in a new book, Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy. The author is sportswriter and novelist Jane Leavy. Jane, welcome to the broadcast. JANE LEAVY: Thank you. TERENCE SMITH: What made Sandy Koufax so special, both as a pitcher and a person? TERENCE SMITH: And you should explain that he did so because he had, what, terrible arthritis. JANE LEAVY: What they called it in those days was traumatic arthritis, and he injured his arm sliding back into second base in August, 1964. It was never the same after that. But sports medicine was really medieval in those days. All they had was ice, which was a new innovation in keeping swelling down, and they could shoot the cortisone directly into his elbow joint. And they put on this stuff called Capslun, a paste made of red hot chili peppers that smelled so bad and burned so much that when Jim Kott went to shake his hand in the 1965 World Series, he had to run away. It felt like camphor. And he said he couldn't be near him, and he just walked away.

Sandy Koufax Quotes A guy that throws what he intends to throw, that's the definition of a good pitcher.
Sandy Koufax

I became a good pitcher when I stopped trying to make them miss the ball and started trying to make them hit it.
Sandy Koufax

I can't believe that Babe Ruth was a better player than Willie Mays. Ruth is to baseball what Arnold Palmer is to golf. He got the game moving. But I can't believe he could run as well as Mays, and I can't believe he was any better an outfielder.
Sandy Koufax

I think it's incredible because there were guys like Mays and Mantle and Henry Aaron who were great players for ten years... I only had four or five good years.
Sandy Koufax
I've got a lot of years to live after baseball and I would like to live them with the complete use of my body. Sandy Koufax If there was any magic formula, it was getting to pitch every fourth day. Sandy Koufax People who write about spring training not being necessary have never tried to throw a baseball.

Cons Everything but the man himself. . . The Bottom Line A baseball book worth reading, if only to see what all the purists are complaining are about. Full Review The great Dodger left-hander Sandy Koufax lives on in the popular imagination as the J.D. Salinger of baseball: a short span of brilliant work preceded by years of frustrating mediocrity, a fanatic following far beyond the realm of normal popularity, and an sudden exit from public life at the very peak of his powers. The comparison, of course, doesn't do Koufax justice. Jerry Salinger spent as many years publishing dozens of good-but-unremarkable stories in the popular magazines of the late 30s and 40s, peaking in 1952 with the classic novel Catcher in the Rye, only to grow more cranky and bitter and isolated as the years passed. Ever track down that last, depressing novella by Salinger, "Hapworth 16, 1924," which appeared in the New Yorker? And do we have to tell you how Salinger retreated to a fortified house-on-the-hill deep in squirrel-infested New Hampshire and kept a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the nearest birch tree for the past 40 years? Need we say more? And, by the way, are we going to get sued?

Sanford Braun Koufax (b. December 30 ) strung together five amazing seasons as a Major League Baseball pitcher in the before arthritis ended his career at the age of 31. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Koufax was a natural athlete as a child, excelling particularly on the basketball court, which helped win him an athletic scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. While there, he pitched occasionally for the baseball team and caught the eye of scouts from his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers with whom he signed a contract in . Although he was a long way from being ready for the major leagues, the rules at the time stipulated that because he had received a then-substantial signing bonus he had to spend two years in the majors before being sent to the minor leagues. Ironically, the Dodgers cut their future manager, Tommy Lasorda, to make room for Koufax. Blessed with a blazing fastball but little command of it, Koufax played for Brooklyn for three seasons (1955-57) with limited success. He was still a fan favorite with the Jewish community, however. After the team moved to Los Angeles in , Koufax continued in the same role, pitching long relief with an occasional start.
