Walter "Big Train" Johnson
A Kansas Portrait
One of the first inductees into baseball's Hall of Fame was native Kansan Walter Johnson. Born on an Allen County farm in 1887, Johnson was one of the game's foremost pitchers despite playing on the game's perennially poorest team. Johnson won 416 games, second most in history, on teams of the Washington Senators that were simply awful. He may have been America's foremost sports figure identified with losing teams. He did pitch the woeful Senators to a World Series title in 1924 and throughout his career threw 110 shutouts, the most in history and struck out a then record 3,508 batters mostly with a blazing fastball that became his trademark. He delivered the fastball with the speed of a locomotive, hence the name "Big Train Johnson." His control was phenomenal, most thought because he lived in daily fear of injuring another player with his awesome speed. He always came back to Kansas during his baseball years, and he and his wife lived on a working farm near Coffeyville until her death in 1930. At the time of Johnson's death in 1946, New York City sports columnist (Henry) Grantland Rice wrote: "Baseball may have produced a greater pitcher than Walter Johnson, but I doubt it. One of the all time greats has had the game called by darkness. His successor has yet to show against the horizon."

    All America Teams
Count appearances on Deadball Era all-star teams . Several summary counts supplement this introduction and annual listing. Baseball Magazine began publication as a monthly in May 1908. Soon after the baseball season ended, the November issue (vol. 2, no. 1) included a one-page article, "All-Star League Teams" (1908) . That seminal article listed "All-American League", "All-National League", and "All America" teams under the line, "Following are the All-Star team selections of The Baseball Magazine Every year 1908 to 1950, BBMag selected the two league teams and one "All America" team. The selections were unattributed 1908-10, then attributed to F.C. Lane, 1911-37, and Dan Daniels, 1938-50. Here the annual AL and NL teams are listed explicitly and the annual "All America" team is identified by bold face in the league listings. For 1913 only, there is a second team from each league. Every team comprises one player each at positions 1B, 2B, SS, and 3B, and three Outfielders; that is, seven players for seven regular positions. The 1908-1911 teams name one man at outfield positions LF, CF, and RF, but the man did not generally play the position. Beginning in 1912, every team simply names three outfielders. Here, the men who regularly played centerfield are marked "[cf]". The "battery" of pitchers and catchers is variable: 1908 2 catchers, 5 pitchers 1909 3 catchers, 5 pitchers 1910 2 catchers, 5 pitchers (3 pitchers on each league team) 1911 4 catchers, 6 pitchers (4-5 pitchers on the league teams) 1912 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1913 1 catcher, 2 pitchers (same on the league second teams) 1914 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1915-19 1 catcher, 2 pitchers

Summary of the life and baseballcareer of walter johnson. Copyright 2001 by PageWise, Inc....... Title Who is walter johnson?

    Who is Walter Johnson?
Walter Perry Johnson was born in Humboldt, Kansas on November 6, 1887 and moved to California with his family soon after his birth. He began his baseball career as a catcher for the Oil Field Juniors because no one on the team could catch his high-powered pitches. When he was 16, Johnson was pitching and digging holes for the Weiser Idaho Telephone Company. bodyOffer(2392) Johnson's only no-hitter came in 1920. After going four years without reaching at least 20 wins, Johnson shocked everyone by posting a 23-7 record in 1924. The 37 year-old Johnson led the American League in victories, winning percentage, shutouts (6), strikeouts (158) and earned run average (2.72) for the year and earned his second Most Valuable Player award. That was an incredible year for the Senators as they took the American League pennant and went on to win the World Series Championship in seven games. During spring training in 1927, Johnson suffered a broken leg resulting from a line drive hit by Joe Judge. The following year Johnson suffered a severe bout with influenza and lost a significant amount of weight. That was the end of his playing career. In 1929, Johnson replaced Bucky Harris as manager of the Senators. In 1933, he went to Cleveland as their manager. In 1936, Johnson was one of the first 5 men named to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Washington Senators owner Clark Griffith stated that Johnson's most incredible feat was pitching 22 scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912. Johnson however felt that his best accomplishment was his opening day appearance in 1926 where he went 15 innings to beat the A's best pitcher Eddie Rommel in a 1-0 victory. In 1946, Johnson was diagnosed with a brain tumor and suffered with it for nearly eight months. He died in Washington, DC on December 10, 1946 at the age of 59. He is buried at Rockville Union Cemetery in Rockville, Maryland.

Ring Lardner on Walter Johnson On December 10, 1946, baseball great Walter Johnson died at the age of fifty-nine. Nicknamed "The Big Train," Johnson pitched his way to fame during twenty-one seasons with the Washington Senators. His fastball is considered to be among the best in baseball history. Johnson joined the Senators in 1907 on the condition that the team pay his way home to Kansas if he failed in the big leagues. After a tentative first season, the former high school star found his ground eventually scoring more shutout victories (110) than any other major league pitcher. Johnson's 1913 record for pitching fifty-six consecutive scoreless innings stood for over fifty years until Don Drysdale bested it in 1968. His strikeout record (3,508) held until 1983. In all-time wins, Johnson is second only to Cy Young Honored in 1913 and in 1924 as the American League's Most Valuable Player, Johnson retired from play in 1927. Two years later, he took over as manager of the Senators, a position he held until 1932. In 1936, Johnson was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame , along with Ty Cobb Christy Mathewson Babe Ruth , and Honus Wagner. The "Five Immortals" were the first chosen for the honor.
