NICE GUYS DON'T ALWAYS FINISH LAST
Walter Johnson He possessed a blinding fastball and wonderful curve, and he may have been the greatest pitcher, pound for pound, of all time. But if you look closer into what made up the sum parts of this man, his heart and soul, his life in general, then and only then will you come to understand what Walter Perry Johnson was all about. Everyone knows about his records, his 417 wins and 110 shutouts playing for the lowly Senators. In a time when Christy Mathewson was the King of Pitchers and a national hero to millions, Walter Johnson toiled in Washington DC for a second division team. His blinding speed not withstanding, people loved him for so much more than just his pitching ability. Unlike his friend Mathewson, he was almost always courteous with fans, and never tried to dodge away from them when asked for autographs. At a time in baseball when rowdy play and conduct was the standard, Walter Johnson's character, attitude and values shown brightly. Born in Humboldt, Kansas on November 6, 1887, his family later moved to California, where the young Walter discovered his fastball. He was signed by the Washington Senators after being discovered by Joe Catillon. Detroit had actually been informed about Johnson before hand, but the tight fisted and tight wad Frank Navin decided to not send any scouts to have a look see at the young pitcher from the Iowa State League. (It should be mentioned that when Ty Cobb found out that Walter could have been a Tiger , but wasn't because of Navin's habitual cheapness, it outraged him so much that he flung a chair across a room.

Johnson City was not named for Walter Johnson
JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee Walter Johnson is arguably the greatest pitcher in Major League baseball history. His final record was 416 wins and 279 losses while pitching for the Washington Senators from 1907 - 1927. Johnson was one of the five original inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Noted as a gentleman in a rough and tumble era of sports, Walter Johnson was a great American sports hero and a role model for baseball fans of his era.. Although any city or other entity should be proud to be named for Walter Johnson, there is no connection between this famous athlete and Johnson City, Tennessee. While Walter Johnson was pitching his way to the Hall of Fame in Washington, Johnson City residents were enjoying a stirring brand of semi-pro baseball at the National Soldiers Home as evidenced by the photo below. The baseball field existed adjacent to the National Cemetery until 2001 when it was removed to allow expansion for the Cemetery. Those wanting a souvenir for the 2004 Walter Johnson SCBL baseball tournament to be played at Broadway Sports Complex may want to clip the bracket out of Wednesday’s Courier because the tournament has been cancelled. The tournament was cancelled after two days of stormy weather. Because regional tournaments start Monday, SCBL officials decided it was best to cancel the event. Walter Perry Johnson was born Nov. 6, 1887, to Swedish emigrants on a rural farm four miles west of Humboldt in Allen County. His family left the Humboldt area for the oil fields of California in 1901, and in 1907, at the age of 19, Johnson began his phenomenal major league baseball career with the Washington Senators. No matter how far away from his geographical roots, however, Johnson always cherished Humboldt as his hometown. In his 20-year major league baseball career, the man nicknamed "The Big Train" pitched a dozen 20-plus win seasons and amassed a total of 417 victories the most by any pitcher in the 20th century. Johnson also collected 110 shutouts more than fellow Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax, Carl Hubbell and Dizzy Dean had combined. He struck out 3,508 American League batters more than any pitcher ever and he was involved 64 times in 1-0 games, winning a record 38 of them and losing a record 26. Johnson's best season came in 1913, when he achieved a 36-7 win-loss record with 11 shutouts and a 1.14 earned run average. He was voted the American League MVP that season (he would win a second AL MVP in 1924, at the age of 36). Nine times during a 10-season stretch would Johnson achieve an earned run average below 2.0. Johnson and the Washington Senators won the World Series in 1924, the same year another Humboldt native

Walter Johnson Rallies in Time

Sunday, April 25, 2004; Page E14 Down 6-1 going into the seventh inning, Walter Johnson's baseball team rallied against visiting Watkins Mill yesterday to pick up its first victory, 7-6, over the Wolverines in Coach Kim Ahearn's 20-year tenure. Junior Mike Moss led the Wildcats in the comeback win, going 3 for 5 with a double, two RBI, a run scored and the game-winning hit in the final inning. Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and the game tied at 6, Moss hit a 450-foot shot over the center fielder's head that rolled to the wall as the winning run crossed the plate. "He's got a lot of poise," Ahearn said of Moss, a three-year starter who was batting .563 going into the game and leads his team in RBI. Junior Danny Schindel picked up his second win in a row in relief for the Wildcats (4-6). Wagner Paces St. Paul's in Lacrosse

The Physics of Baseball
Porter Johnson
Albert Belle Hitting the Baseball "It is a haunted game in which every player is measured against the ghosts of all who have gone before." - Ken Burns Baseball is the national sport in the United States, but it has a significant international constituent, as well. Besuboru has thrived for about a century in Japan, and the homu ran is as much a part of their national culture as sumo wrestling, kabuki, and sushi. Baseball is definitely the national sport of Cuba , and is thoroughly entrenched in the Caribbean basin, and quite popular in the Pacific Rim, as well. The baseball, bat, and glove are still composed of natural materials that reflect an obsolete technology, to maintain the myth that the game is the same as that played over a hundred years ago. However, baseball has continuously been altered (indirectly and sometimes directly) by the advance of technology. Here are some significant milestones in the history of baseball:
  • 1865 Overhand Pitching Legalized 1876 National League Organized 1900 American League Organized; World Series Begun

http://www.travel-watch.com/remtrain.htm
More Articles Home Remembering the "Big Train" Walter Johnson" by Harvey Frommer A traveling salesman watched in awe as a big right-handed pitcher struck out batter after batter on an Idaho sandlot. The salesman, a loyal fan of the Washington Senators, contacted manager Joe Cantillon and raved. Cantillon dispatched his injured catcher Cliff Blakenship to see the pitcher. "Take along your bat, Cliff," said the Washington skipper. "And if you can get a loud foul off him, leave him where he is," joked Cantillon to his light-hitting backstop. A few days later Cantillon received a telegram. "You can't hit what you can't see. I've signed him and he is on his way," Blankenship wrote. His name was Walter Perry Johnson and this Saturday (November 6) marks the 112th anniversary of his birth. He joined the Washington Senators in 1907 and remained with the team known as "first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League" until 1927. Literally carrying the Washington team year after year, Johnson was selected 14 times to pitch the Senator season opener. Seven times he pitched Opening Day shutouts - a major league record. His nickname, "The Big Train," came from the fact that he seemed to always be moving his team down the track. Another reason for the nickname was his almost mechanical, precision harnessing durability and power on a 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame.
