The Red Ravens play all home games at Walter Johnson Field
located in Walter Johnson Park
, 715 Park Ave., Coffeyville, Kansas. Construction of the field began in the summer of 1998 and was completed in the spring of 1999 with the installation of tournament lighting and grandstand seating. The City of Coffeyville contracted with Phil Pennington to build the field and Red Raven baseball teams provided much of the labor, including laying nearly 100,000 square feet of sod. Locker room facilities were added to the Walter Johnson complex during the spring 2003 season. Amenities include 40 individual lockers, dressing areas and showers. The park is named after Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Perry Johnson who lived in Coffeyville, Kansas for several years. Born Nov. 6, 1887 in Humboldt, Kansas, the right-hander played for the Washington Senators for 21-years. Nicknamed "Big Train", Johnson's fastball was considered one of the best of all times. Walter Johnson died on Dec. 10, 1946 in Washington, DC. Driving Directions: From intersection of 8th Street and Highway 169, turn east at flashing caution light and follow 8th Street to Park Avenue. Walter Johnson - a Pitcher
Written by: In the beginning there were players like Ty Cobb who hit .300 for 23 consecutive years, and the 'flying dutchman' Honus Wagner. Pitchers like the 'christian gentleman' Christy Mathewson, and the winningest pitcher in history Cy Young. In the years when the only Yankees were the people in the north and there was an upstart franchise called the American League there was a pitcher, his name was Walter Johnson. Known as the 'big train' because of his high powered fastball which was unequaled in all of baseball Johnson was a poor Kansas farm-hand who became one of the best pitchers baseball has ever been lucky to have ever seen, and he was on one of the worst teams in the history of baseball. Walter Johnson was born in 1887 in a small town called Humboldt,Ks. As a teenager his interests turned from working on a farm to baseball; as he soon found out, he had a natural calling for pitching. As he went to high school he became one of the nations best pitchers and it was just a matter of time before he would be drafted for the majors. He was drafted by the Washington Senators in 1907 for $9. His first year wasn't so good but in his second year he earned the name 'the big train' with an amazing won loss record.

    Walter 'The Big Train' Johnson.
Hailing from tiny Weiser, Idaho, 19-year-old Walter Johnson was signed by the Washington Senators to shore up their considerable pitching woes. Johnson played his entire career with the Washington Senators. From 1907 through 1927, he won 416 games with 110 of them by shutout, struck out over 3,500 batters, and led his usually weak hitting team to a World Championship in 1924. After his retirement as a player, Johnson managed the Senators for two years and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. The Sporting News and others voted 'The Big Train' amongst the top athletes in the 20th century.

    D.C. Baseball Heritage
    March 2003: Battling the Giants
    By Henry W. Thomas
It wasn’t long, however before the sober realities of the situation facing the team and their followers set in. In the World Series they would be going up against one of the greatest baseball teams ever, lead by arguably the greatest of all managers, the legendary John McGraw, who had just captured his 10th National League title in 23 seasons at the helm of the New York Giants. And this team was the best of all of them, fresh from their fourth straight pennant and brimming with talent, including seven players now enshrined in baseball’s hall of fame. This was a slugging outfit, with such stalwarts as Bill Terry, Hack Wilson, Frankie Frisch, Ross Young, and "Long George" Kelly, the major league RBI leader in 1924. The Senators pitching staff would have their work cut out for them.
With the championship tied at two games apiece, Walter Johnson again took the mound for the crucial fifth contest at the Polo Grounds in New York. And, tragically, once more the great pitcher failed to bring home a victory for his team, only this time without even the consolation of a well-pitched contest. With the 65 pitches he had thrown in the opener perhaps having taken a toll on his arm, Johnson was roughed up by the Giants for 13 hits in a 6 to 3 loss. For many of the nation’s sports fan, this was a real tragedy—the terrible irony of Walter Johnson finally getting into a World Series only to become its "goat".

Career Pitching Record Other Resources Johnson joined the AL's Washington Senators in 1907 directly out of semi-pro baseball without ever playing in the minor leagues. he 6-foot-1, 200-pound, right-handed pitcher soon won the nickname "Big Train" from sportswriter Grantland Rice because of the speed of his fastball. His teammates often called him "Barney" after auto racer Barney Oldfield because of the way Johnson drove a car. In 1908, Johnson set a record by pitching shutouts in three consecutive games against the New York Yankees, on September 4, 5, and 7. (There was no game on September 6.) But he had the misfortune of pitching for poor teams through most of his career; his record was only 14-14 that yer, despite 6 shutouts, and in 1909 he slipped to 13-25, although he had a 2.21 ERA. From 1910 through 1919, Johnson won 20 or more games each year. He led the league in strikeouts for the first time with 313 in 1910, led in shutouts with 6 in 1911, 11 in 1913, 9 in 1914, and 7 in 1915, and was the ERA leader at 1.39 in 1912, 1.14 in 1913, 1.27 in 1918, and 1.49 in 1919. Johnson topped the AL in strikeouts 8 consecutive years, from 1912 through 1919. He was the league leader in victories and winning percentage with a 36-7 record and an .837 percentage in 1913, when he won the most valuable player award. The Senators finished second that season with 90 victories. However, from 1910 through 1910, they averaged only 76 wins a year and Johnson averaged 26.

    About this article:
This article was published in the 1995 issue of Grandstand Baseball Annual and won the SABR MacMillan award as one of the best baseball research articles of the year. It includes details of Walter Johnson's pre-major league career which were discovered as a part of the research that went into Henry W. Thomas' definitive biography of Johnson. There was more here than would fit into that book, but Hank and I felt that the full story needed to be preserved and published.
The 1995 GBA is now out of print, so we asked for, and received, permission from GBA 's editor and publisher Joe Wayman to make this article available on the World Wide Web. Hank and I welcome your comments, especially if you have more information on any of the events described in this story.

    "THE CALIFORNIA COMET"?
WALTER JOHNSON IN THE GOLDEN STATE By Hank Thomas and Chuck Carey The research work for this story of an almost-forgotten period in Walter Johnson's career was a labor of love for two SABR members. Hank is Walter's grandson and lives in Washington, D.C., while Chuck is a more distant relative who lives in Anaheim, not far from the scenes of many of Walter Johnson's early pitching exploits. They had not met until the GBA editor, knowing of each one's search for information on Johnson's California background, put them in touch with each other. Hank has written the definitive Walter Johnson biography. Editor

Walter Perry Johnson was born on November 6, 1887, near Humboldt, Kansas. He was the second of six children. He moved with his family to Orange County, California in 1901 and attended Fullerton High School. He began playing pro baseball in 1906, briefly in Tacoma, and then in Weiser, Idaho, where he was signed to a Washington Senators' contract in July 1907. Here is a list of some of his major accomplishments during his outstanding career:
    • On September 4, 5 and 7, 1908, he shut out the New York Yankees in three consecutive games. He was only 20 years old. On April 14, 1910, he pitched his first of 14 opening day assignments, beating Eddie Plank of the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0. This was the first Presidential opener, where William Howard Taft threw out the first ball. He pitched 56 innings between April 10 and May 14, 1913. This was his best year when he won 36 games and lost only 7. In 1916 he did not allow a home run in 371 innings pitched, a season record.
