Walter Johnson, Baseball Immortal by Harvey Frommer
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info A traveling salesman watched in awe as a big right-handed pitcher struck out batter after batter on an Idaho sandlot. The salesman, a loyal fan of the Washington Senators, contacted manager Joe Cantillon and raved. Cantillon dispatched his injured catcher Cliff Blakenship to see the pitcher. "Take along your bat, Cliff," said the Washington skipper. "And if you can get a loud foul off him, leave him where he is," joked Cantillon to his light-hitting backstop. A few days later Cantillon received a telegram. "You can't hit what you can't see. I've signed him and he is on his way," Blankenship wrote. His name was Walter Perry Johnson and November 6 marks the 112th anniversary of his birth. He joined the Washington Senators in 1907 and remained with the team known as "first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League " until 1927. Literally carrying the Washington team year after year, Johnson was selected 14 times to pitch the Senator season opener. Seven times he pitched Opening Day shutouts - a major league record. His nickname, "The Big Train," came from the fact that he seemed to always be moving his team down the track. Another reason for the nickname was his almost mechanical, precision harnessing durability and power on a 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame.

WALTER JOHNSON
Considered by many to be the greatest right-hander in baseball history, Johnson was the hardest thrower of his time. He was a phenomenally successful pitcher on often terrible Washington Senators' teams. As a veteran, he anchored the only Senators' World Series winning club, in 1924. He and Christy Mathewson were the first pitchers inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I recommend Henry Thomas' book about his grandfather Walter Johnson. I thought the book was well written, insightful, accurate, thoughtful and warm. What an outstanding tribute to an outstanding man! Walter Johnson has always had a special place in our family history. In 1937 my father, Lou Manzo, a butche By coincidence my father stayed in the same hotel as Walter Johnson. My dad recounted the evenings spent in the lobby of the hotel "talkin' baseball" with the greatest pitcher of all time. He described Johnson with such warmth. In one of their conversations, my dad asked himwho he thought would be the next great pitcher. Walter predicted Bob Feller. As you know at this point, Feller was in the very beginning of his career. Of course, he was right! This story comes full circle. In the late 1960's and early 1970's our hometown, Waterbury, Connecticut had minor league ba

Sometimes, it's hard to distinguish between the two when looking at the career of one of the greatest players in the game. He was thought to have the fastest fastball in all of baseball history though it could have never been accurately measured and he won 416 games (second only to Cy Young) in 21 seasons with the Washington Senators. His career statistics include 110 shutouts the most by any pitcher and 38 1-0 wins and 26 1-0 losses. Where do you start when you are trying to describe the career of Johnson? Let's start by looking at some of the incredible accomplishments.
