Tied the UM freshman record with 11 home runs in 1990 ... Starting catcher for the U.S. Olympic team in Barcelona in 1992. Biography Known to everyone as C.J., Charles is one of the outstanding all-around catchers in baseball. A four-time Gold Glove winner, he's a big-time leader behind the dish and is excellent at blocking balls in the dirt. Charles has a quick release and an accurate arm which baserunners have come to respect over the years. A South Florida native, he returned to his original team in 2001 when he signed with the Marlins. Charles was outstanding during the first half of the season as he hit .285, with 16 home runs, 21 doubles and 56 RBI, to earn a trip to the All-Star Game. With such a young and talented pitching staff, the Marlins certainly benefit from Charles' wisdom and the way he handles a staff.

Which Catchers Had the Best Seasons Catching Thieves 1998-2002?
(Minimum 500 innings caught each year)
By Chuck Rosciam
During the period 1998 to 2002 there were 26 occasions where a catcher recorded a caught-thief percentage of 40% or more in a season. The year 2001 was the best year when 9 different catchers had a caught-stealing rate greater than 40%. The individual catcher with the most appearances in this select group is Ivan Rodriguez who did it four times (1999-2001). Second place belongs to Charles Johnson who performed this feat three times (1998, 2001, 2002). Using the 500 innings per season minimum, here are the best of the 1998-2002 at catching thieves: Take a look at the following chart. It lists the runners each catcher caught stealing ( CCS ), the stolen bases attempted ( SBA ), the stolen bases ( SB ) while he was behind the plate, the caught stealing percentage ( CS% ), and the stolen bases allowed per 9 innings ( SB/9 Catcher Team INN G CCS SBA SB CS% SB/9 Year LARUE JASON CIN RODRIGUEZ IVAN TEX BLANCO HENRY MIL RODRIGUEZ IVAN TEX MATHENY MIKE SLN RODRIGUEZ IVAN TEX MATHENY MIKE SLN AUSMUS BRAD HOU INGE BRANDON DET LARUE JASON CIN MOLINA BEN ANA FASANO SAL KCA DAVIS BEN SEA SCHNEIDER BRIAN MON JOHNSON CHARLES LAN AUSMUS BRAD DET PRINCE TOM MIN GIRARDI JOE CHN BLANCO HENRY MIL REDMOND MIKE FLO JOHNSON CHARLES FLO VALENTIN JAVIER MIN RODRIGUEZ IVAN TEX JOHNSON CHARLES FLO POSADA JORGE NYA KREUTER CHAD LAN

Nicknamed "The Glider" for his graceful baserunning and third base play, Charles spent eight tough seasons with the Braves organization in the still-segregated South, and wrote published poetry concerning the universe, racism, and baseball. With Eddie Mathews at third, Milwaukee had no place for Charles and finally traded him to Kansas City. His 1962 rookie marks included career highs of .288 and 17 HR. He remained a steady contributor for five seasons, but his home run production was cut in half when owner Charlie Finley moved the fences back in 1965. Traded to the Mets in early 1967, he was their oldest regular and was waived in November. He re-made the club in the spring of 1968 and batted .276 with 15 homers. [Tom] DeLay, R-Sugar Land, said in an interview with the Star-Telegram that the breakthrough in long-running negotiations will be announced today as a provision in a major corporate tax bill. DeLay said he had been trying to restore the sales tax deduction in states that have no state income tax since Congress eliminated the deduction in the sweeping 1986 tax overhaul. The other states with no state income tax are Tennessee, South Dakota, Nevada, Florida, Washington and Wyoming. Residents of other states can deduct their state income tax on their federal returns; they would be able to choose to deduct sales taxes instead. "It's a matter of fairness," DeLay said.
