November 2, 2002 Joe Jackson doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame. Jackson posted excellent career statistics with the White Sox and the Indians: he could have been one of the best players in the game. Yet he can't explain why he accepted money to fix the 1919 World Series. Gambling-related sins undermine the integrity of the game. If you're caught, you're gone. Jackson and his cronies were caught. In 1998 and 1999, there was some noise from various websites about reconsidering the case of Shoeless Joe Jackson. They didn't make much progress and the whole thing just died. There are still a few web sites left that proclaim the innocence of Jackson. Some are fan sites. Others claim to tell the "truth", then they try to sell you Joe Jackson merchandise. Don't believe the revisionist history suggested by the Hollywood Film, "

Two of the greatest hitters the game has known appear in this photograph. Over a twenty-four year career, Ty Cobb compiled a .367 batting average. Jackson, who was traded to the White Sox in 1915, averaged .356. Jackson's career lasted only thirteen years. Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis banned Jackson from baseball for his involvement in the 1919 conspiracy to throw the World Series, since known as the Black Sox Scandal. Casey Stengel, "The Old Professor," had a fourteen-year career as a player for five National League teams. Stengel is most closely identified with the New York Yankees, whom he managed to ten pennants in twelve years, and the New York Mets, whom he later managed with quite the opposite results. Stengel was also known for his convoluted way of speaking, later dubbed, "Stengelese." In 1954, Gayle Taylor of the Associated Press spoke of Stengel's communication skills, "By talking in the purest jabberwocky he has learned that he can avoid answering questions, and at the same time leave his audience struggling against a mild form of mental paralysis." (Pg. 374, The Dickson Baseball Dictionary Cy Young won 511 major league baseball games; more than any other pitcher. The outstanding nature of his achievement is recognized through the Cy Young Award, which honors the best pitchers in baseball.

GOAL: 400
DEADLINE: 1-9-2003
The 1919 world series was the Chicago White Sox against the Cincinnati Reds. Some gamblers paid some of the players on the white sox to lose on purpose. One of those men was "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Some of the other men said Jackson was in before confirming it with Jackson himself. Jackson tried to refuse the money twice. He tried to report it to the owner of the white sox, Charles Comiskey. He didn't do anything. He even tried to sit out the series, but he was forced to play. He played one of his best games ever and was innocent, but he and his companions were banned from any thing to do with baseball for the rest of his life. He had the third best batting average of all time, but after the scandal no one wanted him to be in the hall of fame. Baseball was his love. It would make him so happy to be in the hall of fame. ..... See full petition below

Shoeless: The Life and Times of Joe Jackson > Customer Review #1: A balanced, thoughtful book

There has been a lot said and written about Joe Jackson by a variety of people - baseball people, baseball historians, scholars of the 1919 World Series, residents of the South (particularly South Carolina), and others. Theres also been a variety of books produced about Jackson, most with his point of view or the "point of view he would have had," whatever that might have been at any point in time. It was with some skepticism that I picked up Fleitzs book and started to read, half expecting to see the same arguments that Ive read before - Jackson as a victim, as the greatest player not in the Hall of Fame but for one mistake, and how he went back to South Carolina and scratched out a living (or was very successful, depending on which book you read). Fleitzs book was a most pleasant surprise - it offers information that I havent found anywhere else, and gives more "flesh" and substance to the person that was Joe Jackson than any previous account of his life that I had read. One point is the relationship that he had with his wife: always shown as the doting couple, Fleitz writes that this wasnt always the case. In baseball, he shows that Jackson wasnt the near-mythological player that he had been portrayed, and that he did fail at any number of clutch situations. By the same token, Jackson is also frequently mentioned as a batting role model to any number of famous players. The reactions of contemporaries thoughtout the book is also delightful feature.

, baseball player. One of the finest natural hitters in baseball history, Jackson played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox, achieving a .356 career batting average. In the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal, he was tried with seven other White Sox players for taking bribes to throw World Series games and was barred from major league baseball for life. He maintained his innocence, but the scandal cost him membership in baseball's Hall of Fame. Jackson played a game in the minor leagues without shoes owing to an injury, thus acquiring the appellation "Shoeless."

The local hero who'd played in seven World Series during the early part of the 20th Century, with the Yankees winning four of them. Well, after the ballpark was opened in 1923, Babe went on to hit 41 homers in 1923, 46 in 1924 and 47 homers in 1926. 'But it was in 1927 that he'd struck 60 home runs. A record which wasn't broken until 1961 when Roger Maris hit 61.

There is a huge debate raging among baseball fans everywhere, and although the 1999 ceremony is over, the controversy will continue until fans of Shoeless Joe are victorious. The Task
Opinions are formed, or changed, by first gathering the facts. Your first task will be "Information Gathering". Working in groups of three, find out all you can about what really happened during the World Series of 1919. You will take notes about Joe, the game, the accusation, and the trial. Your group must then form a consensus of opinion. At the conclusion of this Quest, you will present a 5 minute statement to the group justifying your decision of guilt or innocence, punishment or induction. Further, you will compose and send a letter to the Baseball Hall of Fame Committee with your conclusions and recommendations.

Say it ain't so, Joe...... This site is devoted to the memory of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the many other memorable players of the turn of the century. My fascination for this particuliar player began about ten years ago, when my husband would take me along to baseball card shows, of which he has been an avid collector since 1950. I found myself viewing rows upon rows of baseball cards... and decided to begin a collection of my own. The cards that I was drawn to mostly.. were T206's... turn of the century.. "tobacco cards". The voice said " Build it and they will come".... and you have! So grab a "dog" or some popcorn and enjoy your visit.... and keep in mind..... " Shoeless " Joe Jackson belongs in the Hall of Fame!! :-) " The one constant through all the years, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But.... baseball has marked the time. The fields, the game, the players.... are all a part of our pasts. It reminds us all of what was once good." By James Earl Jones... in Field of Dreams

Court TV The holy grail of sports memorabilia has long been the coveted Honus Wagner T-206 tobacco card. A throwback to the days when pairing toys and tobacco was de rigueur , the card was used as part of a tobacco company's marketing campaign to promote cigars. As the story goes, Wagner, a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1897 to 1917 and perhaps a precocious anti-tobacco advocate, didn't want his mug used to hawk cigars to children, and ordered it pulled from production. As a result, there are only about 50 of the rare "Wagner Cards" in existence today. And the most valuable of these, which sold in 2001 for $1.265 million dollars, is sitting on the desk of Joe Orlando, president of Orange County, Calif.-based company Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA). "Every time this card has come up for sale in the past 10 years it has gone up in value," says Orlando, fingering the lucite-encased card. Sports mementos are big business. As head of PSA, a heavy hitter in the lucrative memorabilia authentication business, Orlando has seen the once-amateur sports memorabilia business go corporate. His own company, which is listed on the NASDAQ stock index, began by grading the condition of trading cards. It now does most of its business in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the memorabilia business: Game-used items.

"Shoeless" Joe Jackson, one of baseball's enduring icons, both a great player and a tragic figure following his ban from baseball as one of the Chicago "Black Sox," was known to be only marginally literate. His will and testament was the subject of litigation in 1995 when two charities who were beneficiaries of his wife's estate sued to gain possesion of the original, one of the few authentic examples of Jackson's signature for its value as a collectible.
