Jackson's death derailed efforts
to reinstate him
he momentum behind the effort to get Joe Jackson reinstated into baseball died with him on December 5, 1951. Baseball Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis set the tone for the future of discussions on Jackson when Jackson and seven other members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox were banned from the game for life in 1920. With each time that the baseball writers or veterans committees announce new inductees into baseball's Hall of Fame, the debates can stir again. Does Joe Jackson deserve a place in baseball's Hall of Fame? The numbers say yes. His career average of .356 is one of the highest ever and the highest of any player not currently in the Hall of Fame. Bill James rates Jackson as 6th among left-fielders in his recent addition of the Baseball Abstract. Jackson played in 1330 games between 1908 and 1920. He hit 54 home runs and drove in 785 runs. The Black Sox scandal, however, remains the tarnish on his shining career. The most recent efforts to get Jackson reinstated include a resolution passed by both the S.C. House and Senate asking for baseball to look into the issue. The state's senators met with baseball officials and prominient players Ted Williams for one, made the case for reinstatement. To this point, however, baseball has not taken any action on the requests.

Newspapers, the major medium of the time, played huge roles in bringing about action against baseball corruption in the wake of the Black Sox Scandal of 1919-1921. Newspapers brought the scandal into public consciousness and forced baseball to act. Single games had been thrown before and in 1877 the first betting scandal hit the national game. That year the Louisville Courier-Journal reported that the National League’s Louisville Grays had been involved in a fix in October of 1877. Later that year four Louisville players were banned from baseball. Corruption continued into the 20 th Century, but owners ignored it because they felt it would ruin baseball as an industry. Rumors of fixing the 1919 World Series were swirling before the first game. The Chicago White Sox were heavily favored over the Cincinnati Reds, but the odds mysteriously began to shift away from Chicago prior to the first game. Arnold Rothstein, a prominent New York gambler known as “The Big Bankroll,” had agreed to finance the fix for $80,000 dollars. As he placed bets on the Reds to win, rumors of a fix circulated among other gamblers. The odds shifted from 8-5 favoring the White Sox to even money, as the “smart money” was going on the Reds.

"Shoeless Joe" Jackson Banned from Baseball A deadly hitter and a fielder whose glove was called "the place where triples go to die," Shoeless Joe Jackson carved a name for himself in baseball history for his monumental skills and on-field achievements. But his legacy remains a sad one, tainted by association with the infamous "Black Sox Scandal" of the 1919 World Series. In response to suspicions that the White Sox had thrown the series under the influence of sports bookies, baseball commissioner Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis banned Joe Jackson and seven of his teammates for life, sending a no-tolerance message regarding the presence of betting in baseball. Of all the players, Jackson's involvement in the conspiracy seemed the least plausible, as his on-field stats were sparkling a .375 batting average and a perfect fielding percentage during the series. A jury later acquitted Jackson of the charges, and despite holding the third highest lifetime batting average in baseball history at .356, the legendary outfielder remains an outcast from the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Biography On July 16, 1888, the future "Shoeless Joe" was born Joseph Jefferson Jackson in Pickens County, South Carolina, as the eldest of George and Martha Jackson's eight children. As a child Joe worked alongside his father in a textile mill in Brandon Mill, SC, and by 13 was starring on the mill's baseball team.

Submissions Shoeless Joe Jackson's Savannah Days and the Black Sox Scandal by Timothy Daiss (Savannah, GA) “All I know is Joe was exonerated in the trial. It irks and irritates me when people rant and rave about Pete Rose not being in the Hall of Fame – not until Joe gets there first,” says Maggi Hall of Savannah, the 87-year old niece of baseball legend “Shoeless Joe” Jackson. Few stories are as bitter sweet as Jackson’s rise to baseball stardom and his subsequent banishment from the game he played so well. Jackson was a baseball enigma from an early age. Born into relative poverty just outside of Greenville, S.C., he was working 12-hour days in the local textile mill by the age of 13. With no other opportunities, Joe took to the field. He starting playing for the mill team as a boy, then played semi-pro ball and by the age of 19 got his first break. A Greenville sportswriter spotted the gangly 6-foot-one-inch Jackson in a game, noticed his talent and penned a story for the Greenville paper. Jackson signed with the Class D Greenville Spinners of the Carolina Association for $75 a month in 1908. By the end of the season, he led the league in hitting with a .354 average, drawing the attention of

Lifetime .356 Batting Average Thanks to Ed Nixon of SABR for the following contribution. "...There is much I can tell you about Joe Jackson, but let me give you some highlights to his great career. In 1911 he batted .408 , but was still beat out by Ty Cobb . Over the course of two seasons, 1911 and 1912, he averaged .402. During a throwing contest, he tossed a baseball 396 feet on a line and beat out the likes of Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, and others, to win a trophy. In thirteen years, Jackson struck out only 158 times. Jackson had a career high 32 OF assists in one season. In the 1919 WS he hit .375, threw out six baserunners, had 13 hits(the official scorer took away one hit, he called it an error on the fielder), hit the series only home run, fielded 1000 per cent, and they say this man was tanking the series!! what a crock!! Christy Mathewson said Jackson had no part in throwing the series, from what he observed from the scorers table. Nobody loved the game more than Joe Jackson, thats why he played outlaw and semi-pro ball until 1937....".

About the Ball Park This is a photo of the brick gateway that leads ...to the restrooms? A strange place to put the plaque, I thought. A better photo is on the way. The plate has the following message: Joseph Jefferson Wofford Jackson As a thirteen year old. Joe Jackson earned a position on the Brandon Mill Team. He possessed a talent so uncommon that legends grew from his deeds. His home runs were known as "Saturday Specials", his line drives "blue darters". His glove "a place where triples die". Shoeless Joe was the greatest natural hitter ever to grace the diamond, and was such an inspiration that Babe Ruth chose to copy his swing. He was banished from baseball for his complicity in the 1919 Black Socks scandal, yet his memory still moves across the conscience of America. Shoeless Joe Jackson never had to say it wasn't so, for the people who knew him best never questioned his integrity. Textile Baseball - The industrial cotton mills were chiefly responsible for the south's recovery from The Civil War. Collectively, the mills brought the "true grit" American working class together. The timeless competitive spirit of work and play, from scratch to scrap teams, evolved into a baseball era of unyielding desire, aspiration, and anticipation to excel. Textile baseball produced many great legendary ball players. Mill workers by the thousands once swarmed out of drudgery when the whistles blew on Saturday afternoons, to their village ballparks to enjoy the thrill of America's favorite pastime - baseball.

Shoeless Joe Jackson Month Greenville, South Carolina. The City of Greenville, South Carolina, opened an exhibit free to the public during the month of July, 1999 to highlight the life and career of Joseph Jefferson Wofford Jackson, who came from the Brandon Community, a textile mill village in West Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville Mayor Knox White proclaimed the month of July as Shoeless Joe Jackson Month. The display closed at month's end but will likely be back. July was chosen as Shoeless Joe Jackson Month because Joe was born on July 16, 1888, and Joe and Kate were married on July 19, 1908. No surprise what this book is about. Shoeless Joe Jackson is a legend of mythical proportions. Called by many including Cobb, Williams and Ruth the greatest natural hitter of all time, Jackson was thrown out of baseball as one of the Chicago Black Sox involved in the 1919 World Series fix.
It was also important to understand the role of gamblers and gambling in and on Major League baseball. Baseball at that time was rife with corruption and many games were thrown. Even many players now enshrined in Cooperstown were involved. Some of them were caught with incontrovertible evidence, yet very few were really punished (In fact in Major League history only 36 men have been banished from the game, 28 for gambling).
The eight White Sox who were involved and later called Black Sox were uneducated men who were manipulated into testifying. There was little, if any, legal basis for their expulsion from the game. In a modern courtroom, the case would never have been heard. Even then, in a crooked and corrupt Chicago where influence peddling was common, the ballplayers were not convicted of wrongdoing. Nor were any of the gamblers who arranged the fix.
