Hideki Irabu strikes out NINE in first game!
Written by J. P. Essene Editor What's HOT!
The Japanese pitching phenom named Hideki Irabu made his debut tonight! He struck out NINE Tigers! Hideki in Japanese means choice. (Editors note. A Japanese reader corrected us by saying Irabu means choice.) The choice for this 99 MPH fireballer was the Yankees or no baseball in the US! He got his wish and tonight the fans of the Yankees cheered on this Japanese version of Nolan Ryan! I hope he's a better winner than Nolan! Nolan although a strike out maven, was a mere .500 pitcher! I was glad as a boy when we got Jim Fregosi for him... Irabu allowed only 2 runs in his first win. He went 6 and 2/3's innings before Joe Torre took him out of the game to two standing ovations. Yankee stadium had near 52 thousand for this debut! Most left after Irabu came out of the game!

When Sports Lions Are Tabbies
YOU'VE GOTTA love Hideki Irabu. Or you gotta hate him. The first thing he showed us was that the only difference between himself and the millions of other Yankee fans who wouldn't consider playing for any other team was his agent, George Steinbrenner's desperation and a lot of press coverage. For a while we thought he might actually have the goods. If he was able enough to make the Padres, surely he could help the Yankees to another pennant. But apparently the American League batters hadn't read the stories. They hit him, hard, and thus endeth his honeymoon in the Bronx. Poor Irabu planned on becoming a legitimate star. Never did he figure on turning into a character out of professional wrestling, the foreign phenom turned greedy interloper with a guaranteed contract. What was it about Irabu that George liked so much? A chance to corner the local Asian baseball fans? (Stranger things have happened.) A person only has to look at the way Tiger Woods has galvanized the golf world to see how a baseball magnate might fancy that a multicultural marketing strategy could work miracles for our national pastime. Alas, it hasn't worked entirely for Woods, either. But it didn't really have to, since Woods was a millionaire before he even made his professional debut - quitting college and pitching for a shoe company with the first words he spoke as a professional - a wealthy man before he'd even swung a club as a member of the tour.

MAYOR'S MESSAGE
Mayor's WINS Address
Sunday, July 13, 1997
Last Thursday, New York City watched as Hideki Irabu made his stunning debut at Yankee Stadium. Hideki is the first player from Japan to wear the pinstripes, and joining the Bronx Bombers was the fulfillment of a life-long dream. Hideki could have played for any city he wanted, but he chose to play in "the house that Ruth built"and we are very glad that he did. Following weeks of anticipation, Hideki Irabu did not disappoint New Yorkers. In six and two-thirds innings, he dominated the Detroit hitters, striking out 9 players and allowing only five hits and two runs. By any standard, he gave an incredible performance, and the Yankees beat the Tigers 10 to 3. His arrival is an event of great significance for the relationship between American and International baseball, but it is of even greater significance as an example of the immigrant experience in New York City. Even though his drama played out on a much larger stage than other immigrants to our city, Hideki Irabu's choice to come to New York City echoes the same decision that people from all over the world make every day, the same choice that millions of people have made throughout New York City's history. With the courage to build a life in America comes a genuine understanding of what American opportunity and responsibility represent. Millions of immigrants over the years have come here to New York City once through Ellis Island, now through Kennedy Airport to make better lives for their children. Their lives give our city the strength of diversity, a better understanding of itself, and a better appreciation for the core principles that make our nation great.

Baseball: Japanese players bring lessons home Ken Belson NYT
Wednesday, September 17, 2003 TOKYO Call it a victory for crossborder pollination. Eight years after Hideo Nomo left Japan for the United States, Japanese players with major league experience are returning to their homeland to teach the locals a thing or two about baseball the American way. Hideki Irabu, Masato Yoshii and Mac Suzuki are among the Japanese players who have completed the trans-Pacific U-turn this year.
Monday, Irabu was the starting pitcher as the Hanshin Tigers, one of the most hapless teams in Japanese baseball, won their first Central League title in 18 years. Though Irabu did not get the victory as the Tigers defeated Hiroshima, 3-2, his 13-7 record this season and 3.64 earned run average proved instrumental to Hanshin's turnaround. Unlike most of the foreigners who play here, the returning Japanese players are more bicultural and bilingual. This has allowed them to win the trust of their teammates, many of whom envy their travels, and bridge the gap between Japanese and American brands of baseball.
In the process, a new breed of Japanese ballplayer has been created: Someone with outside experience who, rather than being shunned for the "bad habits" he may have picked up overseas, can provide leadership on the field and in the dugout. In proving that you can go to the United States and return intact, these players may convince others to try their luck in the major leagues. The returnees have spiced up the Japanese game, which has fallen on hard times in recent years with the departures of stars like Ichiro Suzuki to Seattle and Hideki Matsui to the Yankees.

(Updated Wednesday, Apr 10, 2002, 09:46:27 AM) ypher Hideo Nomo led the Asian invasion in spectacular fashion when he donned Dodger blue in 1994. His outlandish corkscrew delivery may have helped draw even more media glare than was warranted by his meteoric rise and fall (and recent re-emergence) as a pitching talent. His Dodger teammate Chanho Park, who came from Corea in 1995, showed that an Asian hurler could have staying power too not to mention ultimately command seven-figure annual salaries.
Now the Mariners are stealing the Asian baseball spotlight with the dazzling $13 million Ichiro Suzuki. Halfway into his rookie season here, he was leading the league in hits and steals, not to mention drawing $2 million magazine offers to pose nude. His reward an All-Star slot along with Chanho Park. Even better, their respective teams stand an excellent chance of meeting in the World Series.
Currently six other Asian ballers mostly Japanese and Corean imports are playing in the American majors and are, for the most part, doing well. That's why scouts are now laying the groundwork for importing as many as 15 more young stars from Japan, Corea and even Taiwan in time for the 2002 season. Admittedly, even a contingent of 24 Asian ballplayers would be only 5% of a combined major league roster of about 500. But if Nomo, Park and Suzuki are any indication, they could have a significant impact on the Asian male media image.

Irabu makes his debut #97 Classic Moment: July 10, 1997 Hideki Irabu arrived in New York surrounded by a lot of hype and even more questions about how he would adjust to life at Yankee Stadium after having played in Japan. In his major league debut, Irabu seemed to answer those questions, striking out nine batters in 6 2/3 innings and earning several standing ovations on the way to a 10-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Irabu had four strikeouts in the first two innings as he retired the first six batters he faced. In the fourth inning, he got Detroit slugger Tony Clark to strike out looking at a changeup down the middle. After Bob Hamelin singled, Irabu got two more strikeouts to end the inning. Irabu never quite lived up to the promise of his first outing with the Yankees. He went 5-4 with a 7.09 ERA in 1997 and was inconsistent in two more seasons before George Steinbrenner called him a "fat toad" and traded him to the Montreal Expos before the 2000 season.

POST 2002 PRO BASEBALL SEASON Updated January 15, 2003 Matsui's enormous press conference
On Jan 14 in New York, Hideki Matsui held his official press conference to announce that he's a member of the Yankees. It attracted 350 people from the media. Reports say it's the biggest ever conference for the Yankees for its rookie. He wore the pin-striped uniform and chuckles in delight. Matsui will return to Japan once before returning to New York to prepare for the season. Matsui leaves for New York

Irabu with the New York Yankees in 1997
September 28 in Detroit It's the final game of the season for the Yankeesthat's of course, excluding the playoffs. Irabu was given a chance to start it. The Yankees scored constantly against the Detroit Tigers. His teammates hit in 2 runs already in the 1st inning. Catcher Jorge Posada homered in the 2nd. Then Paul O'Neill and Bernie Williams each single a homer the following inning. It was only in the 5th inning that Irabu gave up a homer. He finished that inning, and since the Yankees won 7 to 2, Irabu collected his 5th win. September 23 in Cleveland Irabu pitched the 7th inning all right. At that point, the Yankees were ahead of the Cleveland Indians But in the 8th, he was homered by David Justice, then doubled by Sandy Alomar. He made a negative contribution, allowing the Indians to reverse the game. The Indians won it 10 to 9. September 20 in New York The Yankees have found their place in the playoffs by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in the 11th inning 4-3. Irabu pitched the 6th inning, and hurled a speed ball which marked 156 kilos. He lost a base hit and walked one. September 18 in New York It was at a crucial pointin the 7th inning, with the Yankees tied 6-6 to the Detroit Tigers, that Irabu was appointed to pitch. It's been 13 days since he pitched in a game. Perhaps, his daily training at the gym had gotten him in better shape, for he had 2 good innings, stiking out 4. When he finished the top of the 8th, the fans gave him a big hand. Unfortunately, the Yankees were defeated in the 11th inning, 7 to 9.

    His popularity
In Japan his evaluation is not good. Japanese thought in 2000 that he was not a good player. He is called "UCHUUJIN" by media, which means 'space alien' in Japanese because of his odd fashion and odd behaving. He was conspicuous his fashion style and action. His favorite color is red. He used red gloves, wrist bands, and protector in the baseball game. Besides he drove a red car. His action and speech often appeared in newspapers and journals.
