Sunday, July 27, 2003 Readers correct record about Hoy
Response to last week's column confirms that a lot of baseball experts read The Cincinnati Enquirer . While many wrote to praise the story itself or the career of deaf player William "Dummy" Hoy, a few wrote to set the record straight on myth attaching itself to Hoy. From Jeanne Shannon, West Chester Township: "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed your article on 'Dummy' Hoy today. I went to school with his grandkids in Mount Healthy in the 1940s. His only granddaughter is living in Sycamore Township. Another grandson lives in California, and another, who died some years ago, was an Ohio state representative. There are several great-grandchildren. It would be nice to have some of them there (at Great American Ball Park on Aug. 3), inducting their illustrious grandfather into the Reds Hall of Fame." From Steve Sandy, Columbus: "As a serious researcher of 'Dummy' Hoy since 1989, I have collected articles, tidbits, a baseball card, a uniform, and even a wedding dessert plate given me by a Hoy family member. He first tried out for the Milwaukee Brewers, didn't like what they offered, tried out for Oshkosh and accepted. His last season was with Los Angeles (in the Pacific Coast League), playing all 212 games." From Paul Herbert, Milford:

While these achievements (and these are only a few of the total) would seem to be more than sufficient for induction into the Hall of Fame, Hoy has been consistently bypassed. Why? Probably because he was deaf. A new full-length biography of Hoy is being put together by Deaf Life Press, and is previewed on the site. In November 2000, the "Dummy" Hoy Committee voted to transfer its affiliation from the USA Deaf Sports Federation to MSM Productions, Ltd., the parent company of DEAF.com, which designed and hosts the "Dummy" Hoy Homeplate (Website). The new affiliation will make for a more effectively organized Committee and efficiently run outreach campaign. The William "Dummy" Hoy Committee Hall of Fame/Outreach Campaign Its mission is twofold:
  • Hall of Fame Induction Campaign–to get William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame;
  • Other projects include purchasing Hoy memorabilia and artifacts for a possible mini-museum, and helping to get Hoy inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. To raise funds for the Committee, MSM Productions, Ltd. also plans to design and sell commemorative pins and T-shirts, among other items. Matthew S. Moore, President of MSM Productions, Ltd./DEAF.com, is serving as President of the Hoy Committee. Randy Fisher of Belmont Hills, PA, who previously chaired the AAAD/USADSF Hoy Committee, continues as Vice President. His responsibilities remain the same. Steven R. Sandy of Columbus, OH, is in charge of Special Projects. Other Committee members, including Robert F. Panara of Henrietta, NY, also continue in their old capacities. A new Advisory Board will consist of well-known figures in the Deaf Sports and baseball communities. The first appointments will be announced later.

    Sunday, August 3, 2003 Hoy enters Reds Hall today Deaf outfielder was known for his speed
    By John Erardi
    The Cincinnati Enquirer
    The first time the Reds had a real ballpark worth talking about, Dummy Hoy was patrolling center field. That was the Palace of the Fans at the turn of the century.
    William 'Dummy' Hoy had 597 stolen bases in 14 seasons.

    Hoy takes center stage again tonight - albeit posthumously - in Great American Ball Park, to be inducted into the Reds' Hall of Fame. Also being inducted is Big Red Machine left fielder George Foster. The induction ceremony will take place on the field at 7:30 p.m., just before the start of the Reds-Giants game. None of Hoy's descendants who will be on hand is old enough to have seen Hoy play his final season in Cincinnati in 1902. He was 40 - and yet still had enough of his legendary speed to steal the final 11 of 597 career stolen bases ... and leg out the last two of his 121 career triples ... and the last 16 of his 249 career doubles ... and hit .290, two points above his career average of .288. There will be no video clips of Hoy on the big screen tonight showing him tearing around the bases at the Palace ... or making an over-the-shoulder catch of a deep drive off the bat of Honus Wagner ... or throwing out a runner at home.

      THE GREENS AND THE MASONS
      The links between Moline baseball and the Masons are ancient, venerable, dark, deep, verdant, piquant, and that's not simply because of long-time Mason Fate Norris . Although the Greens franchise only reached the Quad Cities in 1994, its Quad Cities predecessor, the Grangers, had a rich, brief history in the 1930s and 1940s as a member of the Middle West Baseball League. What baseball historian worth his salt can think of baseball in the Midwest during the Depression without remembering messianic Luke Michaelson? Sadly, both the Grangers and the MWBL folded in the understaffed F4 years of WWII. The Grangers had moved to Moline from Des Moines in 1932 after having been one of the original members of the MWBL in the early years of the century. Those great Granger teams of a century ago won league championships in 1902 and 1909 behind the fearful leadership of player manager and shortstop Dick Cooper, "Ragged Dick," and the stellar pitching of their lefty-righty tandem, Jacob "Puzzle" Hardy and Ebenezer Cook, the so-called "Boy with No Smile." But even before that, reaching into the 19th century, a semi-pro team known as the Iowa Grangers played in Des Moines, its players drawn from the local

    by David Nemec
    Signet: 1998 Great Baseball Feats, Facts, and Firsts Lists of statistical accomplishments are difficult to read, but Nemec weaves pertinent stories into the statistics, allowing a fan to read Great Baseball Facts, Feats, and Firsts as a book rather than simply own it as a reference. The stories help the reader retain what he has read. Few readers will remember that Roy Smalley Sr. was the last player to make 50 or more errors in a season had Nemec simply listed the statistic. When Nemec augments the statistic by adding the Wrigleyville slogan "Miksis to Smalley to Addison Street", he amplifies the statistic, making it easier for a reader to remember. Nemec's book focuses on the statistical minutiae. Dickie Thon was one of a quartet of players with the fewest number of triples in a season while leading the National League for a season. Thon walloped ten triples in 1982 to lead the circuit, joining Johnny Callison Willie Davis , and Maury Wills as loop leaders with only ten triples.

    History of umpiring
    Did you ever wonder what caused an umpire to first signal a called strike by raising his right hand? Watching umpires it's almost as if they think the players are deaf. Or maybe the hand signals for balls and strikes have always been for the benefit of the fans who can't hear the call from so far away. bodyOffer(3448) Actually an umpire did first signal balls and strikes with his hand for a deaf baseball player who was one of the best major league players of his era, William "Dummy" Hoy. Before he suggested the signals to an umpire in 1887, Hoy had to read the lips of the umpire to know if each pitch was a strike or ball. The pitchers on the other teams often took advantage of the situation to throw the next pitch before he was ready. Born a deaf mute during the Civil War in Houcktown, Ohio, Hoy isn't in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. He wasn't even inducted into the Hancock County (a county in Northwestern Ohio, about 40 miles south of Toledo) Sports Hall of Fame until 12 years ago. Regardless, he not only was one of the best players of his time but holds records that have never been broken. It wasn't always easy for Hoy. Two playwrights, Allen Meyer and Michael Nowak wrote, "The Single Season of Dummy Hoy," a comedy about his first year as a major league baseball player. The play debuted in 1987 in New York and Chicago and was about Hoy's first year as a player, 1886.
