Can pitchers prevent hits on balls in play?
Tom Tippett
July 21, 2003 In January, 2001, Voros McCracken published an article that shook the baseball analysis community. In an attempt to better understand how to separate the contributions of pitching and defense, McCracken divided the traditional pitching stats into two groups those that are under the direct control of the pitcher (hit batsmen, walks, strikeouts, homers) and those that aren't (hits on balls in play). He called the first group defense-independent pitching stats, or DIPS for short. I'll get into the details shortly, but before I do, the reason McCracken's work caused such a stir is that he reached a conclusion that seems very counter-intuitive and, if true, extremely important. In his own words, he stated his major finding in these two ways, once at the beginning of the article and once at the end: "hits allowed are not particularly meaningful in the evaluation of pitchers" "major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play"

    Player From The Rangers' Past
This Week - Charlie Hough It's hard to mention any player from the Rangers past and not think of Charlie Hough. Hough pitched for the Rangers for 11 seasons (1980-1990). He never put up Cy Young numbers, but he was a consistent winner who reached double-figures in victories nine consecutive season. Not only was Hough one of the most likeable players in franchise history, he was also one of the most unique. Hough started with the Dodgers in 1970 and was originally signed as a third baseman. He learned to throw the knuckle ball from Los Angeles scout Goldie Hold, with help from Hoyt Wilhelm, Jim Brewer and Tommy Lasorda. While Hough was with the Dodgers, he was used almost strictly as a middle-innings reliever. He only started one game from 1970 to 1978. The Rangers purchased Charlie's contract from the Dodgers during the 1980 season. In 1982, the club decided to move Hough into the starting rotation, and they were very surprised by the results. Hough won 16 games that year and began a streak of seven consecutive seasons leading the club in wins. In fact, the knuckleballer led Texas in complete games and innings pitched each year from 1982 to 1987. During this same time period, Hough won a higher percentage of his club's victories than any other major league hurler. When Hough finally left the franchise in 1990, he had rewritten the Rangers record book. He became the all time leader in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, games pitched, losses, and walks. In 1995, The Sporting News named Hough the greatest pitcher in Ranger history. Hough finished his career with the Marlins, and it is only appropriate that he go down in Marlin history as well. Hough was one of the first two free agents signed by the Marlins and won the first game in Marlins history against the Dodgers on April 5, 1993.

I have to say that one of the things I really love about baseball is the culture and the subcultures. Maybe there's a subculture of option quarterbacks in the NFL, but I doubt it.
Also, I gotta give props to Epstein for pursuing the knuckleball. That's good thinking.

That and lots of partying. With that in mind, a good topic for the first column of the new year might involve a comparison between old and new. Instead, I'll split the difference and talk about teams that had been new until even newer teams upstaged them. We already know that the Diamondbacks like expensive players and the Devil Rays like old players, though it will take years before hard evidence confirms my suspicions about the damage their philosophies will do to their ballclubs. By contrast, the Rockies and Marlins have been around just long enough to build a case history. The Colorado Rockies' web site advertises that theirs is "Not Just Baseball." This is true in a way: baseball at Coors Field (and Mile High Stadium before that) is a fascinating, almost maddening departure from the real thing. Until this year I told people that my big ambition in life was to own or run a baseball team. Now I know that I was put on Earth specifically to run the Rockies someday.
