Now, "unique" is a much overused, and misused, word. Not only is it thrown around with great regularity, but often in the wrong context. Unique means "one of a kind," not rare or unusual. Charlie Hough was an unusual pitcher in that he spent significant portions of his career as a significant (the key word here) starter and reliever. How was he unique? Well there have been several hurlers who had lengthy (and relatively equal) careers as both starters and relievers. However, among this breed, there was only one started out as a reliever and then became a full-time workhorse starter... and stayed there. Charlie Hough. The typical career path for these split personality pitchers were either starters who were sent to the bullpen, or pitchers who did both at various times during their careers. Hough is also unusual in another sense. He appeared in 440 games as a starter, and 418 games as a reliever. Among pitchers who made 500 appearances, only four others - Eddie Rommel, Danny Darwin, Woodie Fryman and Mudcat Grant - had their total starts and relief appearances within 10 percent of each other.
