Henderson holding his record-breaking 939th stolen base, May 1, 1991 in full RICKEY HENLEY HENDERSON (b. Dec. 25, 1958, Chicago, Ill., U.S.), African-American professional baseball player who set a record in the early 1990s for the most stolen bases in major league baseball. Henderson was an All-American running back in football as a high school athlete in Oakland, Calif. He chose to play baseball over football, competing in the minor leagues for four seasons. Henderson's career in major league baseball began with the Oakland Athletics in June 1979. In 1980, his first full season, he became one of only three players ever to steal 100 bases, breaking Ty Cobb's American League record of 96 bases. It was the first of seven consecutive seasons in which Henderson led the American League in stolen bases. In 1982 he broke Lou Brock's single-season record of 118 stolen bases, set in 1974, with 130 stolen bases. Henderson added 108 stolen bases the following year. Henderson was traded to the New York Yankees after the 1984 season. In 1985 he scored a career-best 146 runs and hit 24 home runs, and in 1986 he scored 130 runs with 28 homers; for both seasons he led the league in steals. He was traded back to Oakland midway through the 1989 season and helped the Athletics win the World Series.

Sep. 19, 1967- Baseball player. Jim Abbott is one of an elite group of major-league pitchers to have thrown a no-hitter, a feat he accomplished while he was a New York Yankee in 1993. Abbott, who began the 1995 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and ended it as a California Angel, is also among the few hurlers whose fastballs have been clocked at over ninety miles an hour. What makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he plays ball without a right hand. He was born with a rounded stub at the end of his right arm, with one small, finger-like protrusion where his right hand should be. He pitches with his left hand, with the palm of his glove resting on the stub. After each pitch, he quickly switches the glove to his left hand, so that he can catch or field balls thrown or hit back. Prior to becoming a major-league pitcher, Abbott was an Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate baseball all-star, and a high-school standout in three sports. Abbott's athletic achievements have amazed sports fans and inspired countless numbers of Americans with disabilities, who flock to ballparks to see him pitch. He receives hundreds of letters a week, many of them from handicapped children and their parents, and he tries to answer as many as he can, even though he has never considered himself to be disabled. "I just don't think all of this about me playing with one hand is as big an issue as everyone wants to make it," he told Ira Berkow of the New York Times (December 25, 1992). "I don't try to run from the attention about it; I just accept it." Abbott maintains that the toughest thing he faces is not his disability but major-league hitters. The feeling is apparently mutual. "He's got the hand that counts," Larry Sheets of the Baltimore Orioles told a reporter for the Washington Post (April 26, 1989) after facing Abbott's power pitching for the first time.

Career Batting Record Other Resources Considered by many experts the greatest leadoff hitter in history, Henderson is a rare combination of hitting ability, power, and speed. He has led the AL in stolen bases 11 times, including 7 seasons in a row, in walks 3 times, and in runs scored 5 times. Henderson holds major-league records for most career stolen bases with 1,095, most steals in a season with 130 in 1982, and most home runs leading off a game, 63. He joined the Oakland Athletics during the 1979 season. In 1980, his first full season, he led the league with 100 stolen bases. Henderson had a league-leading 89 runs scored, 135 hits, 56 stolen bases, and 327 outfield putouts in 1981, when a player strike shortened the season. With Oakland, Henderson also led in steals with 130 in 1982, 108 in 1983, and 66 in 1984. He was then traded to the New York Yankees. Despite missing nearly a month of the 1985 season with an injury, he again led in stolen bases with 80, and repeated with 87 in 1986. An injury limited him to only 95 games in 1987, but he bounced back with a league-leading 93 steals in 1988. The Yankees traded him back to Oakland during the 1989 season, when he led in steals with 77, runs scored with 113, and walks with 126.
