  • 62. 1990 AL MVP AWARD
No other player in baseball history has both 3000 hits and 2000 walks, not to mentionover 2000 runs scored and Harold Reynolds and kelly gruber won Gold Gloves
    http://venus.lunarpages.com/~double2/History/400Pages/al1990.html
1990 AL MVP C ecil Fielder, unable to get regular playing time with the Blue Jays after spending four years with them, spent the entire 1989 season in Japan. He came back with Detroit in 1990, and hit 51 home runs, the first American League player to reach 50 since Maris and Mantle in 1961.
He didn't win the MVP; Rickey Henderson did. Fielder had a large numbers of supporters, though, enough to make it a close vote (Fielder himself was also quite perturbed at losing). Who deserved the award? Offensive Positions (LF, CF, RF, 1B) AVG OBA SLU AB HIT DB TP HR RUN RBI BB SB OPS LF R HENDERSON OAK C FIELDER DET F MCGRIFF TOR G BRETT KC LF J CANSECO OAK CF K GRIFFEY JR SEA CF E BURKS BOS M MCGWIRE OAK The Oakland Athletics won their third consecutive pennant; they swept the Red Sox in the league playoffs, but were themselves swept in the World Series. Their best player was star left-fielder Rickey Henderson, who had his best season and won the MVP Award. Rickey was also the team's best player in the playoffs, but the rest of the team around him fell apart against the Reds in the World Series.
Henderson was 31 years old, midway through his great career. Though Rickey won't have much problem getting into the Hall Of Fame, I think he is another example of a player whose reputation has suffered because fans identify him with only a single skill. Rickey is the greatest base stealer in baseball history; he does much, much more, but gets little credit beyond what he does on the basepaths. On the other hand, players who do well in one of the Triple Crown categories tend to be overrated, like Fielder.

John Holway the japanese insider 1990, Japan Prevails By John B. Holway In the long history of U.S.-Japan series, the Japanese have won two series, 1970 and 1990. In 1970 they beat the San Francisco Giants six games to three. In 1990 they bested an American All-Star team four games to three with one tie. That 1990 U.S. team included: BA HR Lenny Dykstra Barry Bonds Ken Griffey Jr Julio Franco Roberto Alomar Cecil Fielder Kelly Gruber Mike Sciosia Shawan Dunston Glenn Davis Jesse Barfield Dave Stewart Ramon Martinez Dave Stieb Chuck Finley Randy Johnson Oil Can Boyd Bobby Thigpen 57 saves Rob Dibble 31 saves Jeff Montgomery 24 saves The Japanese strategy was to send each pitcher to the mound for only two or three innings, thus the Americans would be constantly facing a new hurler almost every time they came to bat. The Americans may have been suffering from jet lag as they dropped the first four games.
    Game 1
The sleepy visitors got only two hits in the Tokyo Dome as the Japanese beat Boyd 2-1.
    Game 2
Japan tied it in the third on a walk and three singles and went into the ninth with a 4-3 lead.

Blue Jays Minor League Register - Hitters Buzz Factor One of my off-season projects is to create a register of Blue Jays minor leaguers, for purposes of comparison, nostalgia, or timewasting. As part of this project, I want to try to estimate the Buzz Factor for every Jays prospect of note throughout the years. The Buzz Factor is an unscientific measurement, from (low) to 10 (high), of the hype surrounding a particular prospect as he makes his way up the ladder to fame and glory in Toronto. I am doing this because I am wondering whether buzz is an indicator of success or not (and also for purposes of comparison, nostalgia and timewasting).

History of the World Series - 1992 While the 1992 World Series between the Braves and Toronto Blue Jays might have fallen just short of equaling the 1991 Series for sheer excitement, it was real close. Thisclose. This time, the Series participants engaged in four one-run games out of the six and the decisive game was an 11-inning thrill-o-rama that for taut drama would be difficult to top. The never-say-die Braves, who captured the National League pennant with a three-run, ninth-inning rally against Pittsburgh, showed similar resolve in Game 6 of the 1992 Series. Down three games to two but buoyed by the fact the Series had returned to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Braves nonetheless entered the bottom of the ninth inning staring at a 2-1 deficit. Plus, hard-throwing Tom Henke, who had 34 saves in the regular season, was coming on to pitch for Toronto, whose bullpen was working on a scoreless streak of 15 1/3 innings. Jeff Blauser led off the ninth with a single off Henke, and Damon Berryhill advanced him to second with a bunt. Pinch-hitter Lonnie Smith drew a walk, putting the potential winning run on base.

    http://www.muckdogs.com/frame_pages/history2.htm
A brief History of Baseball in Batavia
In 2003, the Muckdogs will be entering their sixth season as the nickname for the Batavia franchise. Throughout the years, Batavia has called its New York-Penn League team by many different names. It all began in 1939, in the PONY (Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York) League. The Clippers, as they were then called, finished their inaugural season with a mediocre 48-54 record finishing fourth in the six team league. The team was called the Clippers until 1953. After 1953, the Batavia franchise ceased operation until the 1957 season. During this first stint in the league, Batavia won two league titles. When baseball returned to Batavia in 1957, the league and the team both had new names. The league was now called the New York-Penn League (adopted in 1956) and the team was called the Indians (affiliated with the Cleveland Indians). The Indians would last for three seasons, with subpar results (172-195 record), before stopping operations again for the 1960 season. In 1961, baseball returned to Batavia for the second time in five years. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the new affiliate and the team adopted their name. The 1961 season also saw the first winning season in Batavia since 1949. The Pirates played in Batavia for five seasons and won the New York-Penn League title in 1963, Batavia's last championship team. During the Pirates tenure, future major leaguers Dock Ellis and Steve Blass both pitched in Batavia.

Gotta work this weekend so I need this to be short and sweet...or rather short and sarcastic...or maybe just short :) Draft signings...or lack thereof The Rangers have signed the overall fifth pick, Ga Tech 3B Teixeira, to a contract worth up to $12 million. The Cubs signed the second pick overall, pitcher Prior, to a five-year, $10.5 million deal Tampa Bay’s third round pick, Dewon Brazelton, has enrolled for his senior year at Middle Tennessee State. (He must want to come down to LSU with the football team this year:) Braxelton, "I don’t want chump change." The Mariners signed their first pick, Michael Garciaparra (yes, he is Nomar’s brother). Michael, 18, was advised to go to college by many including Nomar but instead signed a three year deal.
