  • Get a free Allstate quote Search our Personals ... Corrections By King Kaufman I never really had a hero as a kid, but I did have a favorite ballplayer, Willie Davis. He was the first player I could recognize, and as the most exciting player on the succession of mediocre Dodger teams that greeted me as I came into baseball consciousness in late-'60s Los Angeles, he was naturally someone I cheered for and liked. But I didn't idolize him. To this day I couldn't tell you his hometown or much of anything else about him without looking it up. When I was 10, Davis was traded to Montreal. Suddenly he was an aging journeyman, bouncing from team to team. Montreal, Texas, St. Louis, San Diego, Japan. He was replaced in center field by Jimmy Wynn, who came over in a trade from Houston, no doubt breaking some young Lone Star hearts in the process. Wynn, the "Toy Cannon," had speed, power and charisma. He led the Dodgers to the pennant that first year and my friends and I loved him. The next year he hurt his arm. He was never the same. Two years and three teams later, he was out of baseball. If I hadn't known it already (and I think I did, somehow), I learned it around that time: It's fine to admire someone you don't know, but don't put all of your emotional eggs in that one basket, because that basket might get traded to the Expos, as it were, or develop bone spurs in its throwing elbow, if I may stretch the metaphor to the breaking point.

‘The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg’: the makings of an American Jewish hero
    September 27, 2000
    by by Michael Gildener-Leapman
director aviva kempner’s latest film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg explores the life of an American hero during the 1930s and 40s. The film probes Greenberg’s impact as a baseball player, American citizen and Jewish icon during the earlier part of this century and the legacy he left for his fans. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is the inspiring account of a lanky Jewish boy’s meteoric rise from Brooklyn to the ranks of baseball’s elite, challenging Babe Ruth’s homerun record while at the same time facing anti-Semitism on and off the field. The film serves as a refreshing tribute to a severely waning American dream through the story of one man’s rise to the rank of “not biblical, but baseball Moses.” Local producer/director Aviva Kempner’s tribute is a nostalgic documentary about an extraordinary baseball player who overcame perhaps the most insurmountable obstacles to rise to become an icon of perseverance. Detroit Tiger’s Hammerin’ Hank’s accomplishments during baseball’s heyday measured up against those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and permanently etched his name among baseball’s greatest.

The Life And Times Of Hank Greenberg
review by Zach B. Rated PG Running Time: 95 minutes Written and Directed by Aviva Kempner Studio: Fox Retail Price: $29.98 Features: Audio Commentary with Director/Writer/Editor Aviva Kempner, Hank Greenberg Stats, Filmmaker's Biography, Additional Interviews, Director's Notes, Reviews, Hank Greenberg Biography, Trailer Specs: 1.33:1 Full Screen, English Dolby Digital 2.0, English Subtitles, Yiddish Subtitles (in English transliteration), Spanish Subtitles, English Closed Captions, Scene Selection Released: October 16th, 2001 So who was Hank Greenberg exactly? Again, he was baseball's first Jewish star who played during the 1930s. This documentary, which took over a decade to complete, literally offers the whole history of Greenberg pretty much. While I didn't know so much about him, I learned a tremendous amount. I don't know why, but people don't really know who he is. With a strong batting average and nearly breaking some famous world records, it baffles me somewhat why he's not looked upon highly as an "old school" star. He was really an incredible player. Presented in its original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratio, the documentary has an old look to it and due to the variety of sources, the quality varies. There's a lot of old newsreel footage, old film footage and filmed interviews. There are scratches and blemishes as expected, but this direct to film transfer ruins the look of what seems to be videotaped interviews. Still, none of this is ever distracting. A lot is meant to be this way. So, it's fine for what it is... and you won't notice this documentary really grabs hold of you.

rumors / press reviews audio the family room ... the other side by Brian York There are about 10 people who know who Hank Greenberg is. Those people are baseball people, or part of the Greenberg family. Those are some lucky people. Unfortunately, Hank Greenberg has past away. You can’t go to Florida, look up Hank and ask him about his life. Why would you? If you ask, then you’re not one of the 10. Obviously. How does one become one of the ten? Through the magic of motion pictures, that’s how. Ever heard of ‘em? Hank Greenberg’s story will not go untold, because of a wonderful documentary, aptly titled The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg As you might have guessed, (but I don’t want to give you that much credit), Hank Greenberg was a slugger in eras past (1930’s-40’s). So what? Sammy Sosa is a slugger in era present (90 - ?). What’s so special about this Greenberg, and why should I care? I ask myself that everyday, except switch Greenberg with rash. Greenberg was special. He hit over 330 major league home runs. How many major league home runs have you hit? He served in WWII (in the middle of his baseball career) for 3 years. How many world wars have you served in while playing baseball? Greenberg hit 183 RBI’s (runs battled in) in one year. An RBI total of 150 is considered to be masterful. How many RBI’s did you have this year? Hank Greenberg was Jewish. How Jewish are you?

Hank Greenburg! Cons Pedestrian editing and presentation do not quite live up to the film's title. The Bottom Line So-so documentary about a true American Sports Hero, who overcame prejudice, and his own awkwardness, to become one of "the four best players" to own the Detroit Tiger uniform. Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot. Several reasons suggest themselves for seeing THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HANK GREENBERG: 1) An interest in baseball; 2) an interest in the success of ethnic minorities in America; 3) an interest in the History of America in the middle years of the 20th Century. The film delivers in these three categories, in some more than others. Hank Greenberg, born in Brooklyn of Rumanian parents in 1911, grew up with the infancy of Celebrity Sports. Noticed while still in high school, he joined the Detroit Tigers Baseball organization, and after a stint of seasoning with a Texas farm club, he joined the Tiger lineup at First Base in 1933.
