The Charge "I never saw Hank Greenberg play, but he was a legendary ballplayer, especially in Jewish households like mine." (New York sports columnist Ira Berkow) Opening Statement The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg Facts of the Case Hank Greenberg's baseball career is presented chronologically, on a season by season basis, utilizing a mix of archival footage and interviews with Greenberg himself and others. The Evidence The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a loving portrait of one of the stars of the 1930s and 40s, prepared with attention to detail and obvious enjoyment by Aviva Kempner. Kempner is a distinguished filmmaker who investigates non-stereotypical images of Jews in history and focuses on the untold stories of Jewish heroes. Hank Greenberg certainly qualifies on both counts. Her 1999 documentary on Greenberg is the result of 13 years of effort (largely due to difficulties in raising funds) and received numerous awards for excellence from various film festivals and associations of film critics. The reasons are obvious. If one would quibble at all about the documentary itself, it would be that Greenberg's life away from the playing field gets short-changed a little. That's where Fox's DVD comes in. The major supplement on the disc is an audio commentary by Aviva Kempner who fills in those gaps so that by the end of it, you have a really rounded portrait of Greenberg the baseball player and Greenberg the person. Kempner really knows a lot about Greenberg and she conveys the information with enthusiasm. A very fine commentary! Also backing up the documentary on the disc are 20 minutes worth of interviews that were not used, presumably more due to time considerations than anything else, as they're quite interesting to hear. Rounding out the disc are short biographies of both Greenberg and Kempner, Greenberg's baseball statistics, reviews of the film by several print publications, a trailer, a some background notes by Kempner.

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

The Life and Times of
Hank Greenberg by Adam J. Hakari
When Hank Greenberg, the famous Jewish baseball player who stood at an enormous 6'4", enlisted in the Army, his drill sergeant let out a string of anti-Semitic insults, citing that he didn't want any "Cohens or Goldbergs" in his platoon. Hank, a man proud of his heritage, spoke up and said that his last name was Greenberg. The sergeant looked at the tall, muscular man in front of him before replying, "I didn't say anything about Greenbergs." The whole of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg Aviva Kempner's The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg feels a bit amateur at times, but its subject is one that other documentary filmmakers have inexplicably passed on for years. Hank Greenberg was a terrific ballplayer and a man who helped those like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron break through the sport's racial barriers. He may be gone (Greenberg passed away in 1986, at the age of 75), but as "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is sung in Yiddish over the beginning and closing credits, Kempner invites the viewers of this tribute to Greenberg to reflect upon the story they just heard and ponder how many people like him exist today. More Articles Home Celebrating Hank Greenberg by Harvey Frommer - Four times he led the American League in home run hitting. In 1938, he blasted 58 - no player had hit more in a season up to that point in time except for Babe Ruth. He starred in the majors for more than a decade and batted .313 for his career. He missed four and a half years to serve in WWII. He closed out his career in 1947 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He blasted 25 home runs that season, most of them into a section of the outfield known as "Greenberg Gardens." In 1956, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He passed away 30 years later. His name was Henry Benjamin Greenberg, but he was better known as Hank Greenberg. "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a documentary film by Aviva Kempner is a loving and beautifully done tribute to a great player and goes into an in depth treatment about all he had to overcome to prevail. The film opens with Mandy Patinkin singing a Yiddish rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while street scenes of young boys playing baseball in the Bronx in the 1930s enter the screen. The son of Romanian immigrants, Greenberg grew up Jewish in the Bronx and went on to star at James Monroe High School.

Movie Review: The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg By Kam Williams Baseball Hall of Famer, Hammerin' Hank Greenberg compiled impressive stats over a relatively brief 10 year major league career which began in 1933 with the Detroit Tigers. He led the American League in home runs four times, hitting 58 in 1938, just falling short of Babe Ruth's record of 60. No one would hit that many homers again until Roger Maris hit 61 in '61. And, of course, Maris' mark stood until Mark McGwire (70) and Sammy Sosa (65) both exploded a couple of years ago. Hank Greenberg in his prime Greenberg also led the league in runs batted in (RBI's) four times, falling just one short of Lou Gehrig's American League single season record of 184 in 1937. Hank was the first baseball player ever to win the Most Valuable Player Award for two different positions: as a first baseman in 1935, then as a left fielder in 1940. With him as their leader, the Tigers won 4 American League pennants and 2 World Series. As prodigious a hitter as Greenberg was, his life bears remembrance for so many more reasons.

Twentieth Century Fox List Price: $9.98 Amazon.com Price: $9.98 Customer Reviews Rating: 3 out of 5 Important Ballplayer for many reasons. Hank Greenberg seemed like a pretty decent fellow and a whale of a ballplayer. Like many, he lost his prime years fighting those jerks in the Pacific. No telling how good his career number would have been if he could have been back in the states poking at the pill. Even with that handicap he still played in three World Series and won 2 MVP awards. This move does a pretty good job of documenting his life, but it seems to define him too much by his religion. Greenberg wasn't even a religious person, but the film continues to go back to the subject. I'm sure that he found discrimination along the way, but when you see the actual footage of him interviewed in 1983, you get the impression that he would be very uncomfortable with his life being told through that lens. He seems too no nonsense for that. It's interesting when he collides with rookie Jackie Robinson in 1947, and offers him encouragement. It's really a poetic moment in baseball history.

Filmmaker Aviva Kempner's thirteen-year labor of love is close to fruition. When Detroit Tiger immortal Hank Greenberg passed away in 1986, Kempner was galvanized by childhood memories of outings to Tiger Stadium with her father and brother, and by the reverence that the great slugger was held in by Jewish communities all across America during the thirties and forties. More than a decade before Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier, Hank Greenberg performed a similar pioneering role for the Jewish ballplayer. Prior to Greenberg's arrival in Detroit, most Jewish ballplayers had changed their names in order to cover up their ethnicity. Not so with Hank. While he was by no means a devout practitioner of the Jewish faith, Greenberg embraced his ethnic background and stood tall—even taller than his 6'4" frame—on the issue of tolerance. Kempner captures Greenberg's unfailingly positive vision of a society where difference is not just tolerated, but respected.

1. Hank Greenberg the Jewish Babe Ruth/Moses/Jackie R... (rate: 4)
If the point of "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" is lost on the viewer, then history itself put the writing on the wall when the owner of the Detroit Tigers misunderstood the meaning of an old photograph of Greenberg and traded his star to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1947 season. Greenberg's last season in the baseball was Jackie Robinson's first, and Greenberg was in the National League to witness it first hand. Not surprisingly, Greenberg was one of the few opposing ball players to offer Robinson encouragement in breaking baseball's color line. But then, as this 1999 documentary proved repeatedly, no white player in the history of the game had been subjected to the abuse Greenberg suffered because his was Jewish. Without a doubt Robinson suffered more, maybe even more that first season than Greenberg his entire career. But this documentary also shows that Greenberg was as important to the American Jewish community as Jackie was to African Americans.

A Baseball Great and War Hero
by Seymour "Sy" Brody Henry "Hank" Greenberg was one of the first men in base- ball to seriously challenge Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs and Lou Gehrigs' league record of 184 runs batted in. Greenberg had a chance to shatter Ruth's home ruin record of 60 in 1938. He had hit 58 home runs and still had five games to play. But the weather was dismal and he faced several erratic pitchers. He failed in his attempt to hit a home run. Greenberg batted in 183 runs in 1937, failing one short of tying Gehrig's record. He did set a major league record of hitting two or more home runs in one game (II in 1938). Greenberg was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame and was twice named the Most Valuable Player of the Year. Greenberg was born on New Year's Day in 1911. His parents had immigrated to New York City from Bucharest, Romania. He attended public schools in the Bronx, New York, and was on the baseball and basketball teams of James Monroe High School. Major league teams were interested in having Greenberg play for them. Greenberg's father turned away the baseball scouts since he wanted his son to attend col lege. He attended New York University on a baseball scholarship. His parents let him play professional baseball in 1930.
