Country: United States
Born: January 1, 1911 in New York
Died: September 4, 1986
His bronze plaque dedicated in 1956 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, begins: "One of baseball's greatest right-handed hitters." Hank Greenberg starred as the Detroit Tigers' first baseman-outfielder from 1933 to 1946 (in military service from 1941 to 1945), finishing his active career in 1947 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"Hammerin' Hank" had a lifetime batting average of .313, and 1,276 career runs-batted-in (RBIs), including an American League-leading 139 in 1934, 170 in 1935, 183 in 1937, 150 in 1940, and 127 in 1946. Seven times he drove in more than 100 runs in a season. His statistics are all the more startling when compared to the diminished number of games played in his career—1,394. He played only 12 games in the 1936 season because of a broken wrist, went into the military only 19 games into the 1941 season (following his second MVP year), and did not return to baseball until July 1945.
Greenberg also played in four World Series for Detroit, batting .318, hitting five home runs and 22 RBIs in 23 games.

I n the 1930s Jewish mothers would ask their sons: "What kind of a day did Hank have?" Hank Greenberg, the Detroit Tigers slugger who came close to breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record, was baseball's first Jewish star. Tall (6'4"), handsome, and uncommonly good-natured, Greenberg was a secular Jew from the Bronx who became "the baseball Moses," an icon for everyone from Walter Matthau ("I joined the Beverly Hills tennis club to eat lunch with him. I don't even play tennis") to Alan Dershowitz ("I thought he'd become the first Jewish president"). Aviva Kempner's loving tribute is chock full of wonderful archival footage from the '30s and '40s and interviews with a self-effacing Greenberg and many of his Tiger teammates. In 1925, 14 year old Greenberg was a player on the Washington Avenue Annex Settlement House baseball team, which won the Bronx championship. Years later, Greenberg won a scholarship to New York University, but he quit after his first term to play baseball full time. Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933 as a first baseman, and helped them win their first American League pennant in 25 years. The Tigers were champions again the following year, and Hank won the American League's Most Valuable Player award by a unanimous vote of the Baseball Writers Association; he won it again in 1940 after he had been switched to left field. After Hank Greenberg declined to play in an important game on Yom Kippur in 1934, Edgar Guest published a poem, the last lines of which are: "We shall miss him on the infield and shall miss him at the bat, but he's true to his religion - and I honor him for that."

Despite losing four prime seasons to World War II and another to a fractured wrist, Hank Greenberg still walloped 331 home runs, including 40 or more on four occasions. His peak year was 1938 when the slugging right-hander hit 58 homers after driving in 183 runs the year before. On the last day of the 1945 season, the fearsome slugger's ninth inning grand slam won the pennant for the Tigers. A two-time MVP, he closed out his career in Pittsburgh, shooting at Forbes Field's ''Greenberg Gardens." Did you know ... that Hank Greenberg is one of just three players to earn MVP honors at two different positions: first base (1935) and left field (1940)?

Film Review:
The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg
The Baseball Crank Rating:
3 for 4 (two HR, a line drive single, and a solid fly-out)
August 21, 2000 Listening to Ken Griffey, Jr. whine about the pressure of performing under the constant scrutiny of insanely high expectations from fans, media, and baseball as a whole, one is almost tempted to sympathize with him. For a normal guy to put up with all that seems a bit much, especially when he's really so very good, and signed for something less than his market value. I don't blame Griffey although one should expect something of a pedestal when one is a product endorser and media darling. But then one might read one of Jackie Robinson's books, or go see a film like "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," and realize what a true superstar is made of. It includes the stuff to rise above "pressure" like Junior will never, ever face. Hank Greenberg didn't get a lot of press during the recent retrospective hoopla of the All-Century team and picking a gazillion lists of all-everything players. There's probably two reasons why history is on the verge of forgetting Greenberg, really one of the greatest sluggers ever. First is his statistical line: a career 331 homers and a .313 average just doesn't seem that impressive in the context of 70 homer years and near - .400 averages. Second, Greenberg was just not truly controversial in any way. He was a good, steady guy who didn't eat 20 hot dogs at a sitting, guzzle champagne out of flappers' slippers, hold out in spring training for a higher salary, or be colorful in any particular way. He wasn't what makes a good "story" by the modern metric.

Hank Greenberg, who led the American League in homers four times, will be profiled on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 11 p.m. ET.
For most of his career Hank Greenberg was presumed to be carrying the fate of the Jewish people on his shoulders. That the Detroit Tigers star ranked only below Jimmie Foxx as his era's top righthanded American League slugger has suggested to some that he might have been second to nobody if he had had to worry only about opposing pitchers. Hank Greenberg hit 58 homers in 1938 two shy of Babe Ruth's then record of 60.

Product Description: Aviva Kempner's Oscar-nominated documentary is about baseball like Field of Dreams is about cornfields. Kempner efficiently covers all the bases of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg's magnificent career with archival footage and talking heads, including family members, former teammates and baseball legends, broadcasters and sportswriters, and such unabashed fans as Alan Dershowitz and Walter Matthau. If this biography's style is not remarkable, its subject certainly was. Greenberg, the son of immigrant parents, was a beacon of hope to Jews. As one observer notes, baseball was a way of "showing we were as American as everybody else." To see one of their own succeed in the national pastime at a time of virulent anti-Semitism was a source of pride and inspiration. One lifelong fan, a rabbi, states, "He was the baseball Moses." Winner of several critics association awards for Best Documentary, this is a stirring film for all seasons. Donald Liebenson Product Reviews:

by Jeffrey M. Anderson Football may make good TV, but baseball was made for the movies. It's a sport for poets, writers, and scholars. Faces and body language are important, suspense is always mounting, and something is always going on, no matter how small. Many baseball movies fail to capture this magic, but The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg succeeds beautifully.

He was one of the first baseball players to leave the game to enlist in the service in World War II. He earned an MVP at first base and then, after switching positions, earned one while he was playing left field.. Greenberg was a massive player for his time, standing 6'4 and weighing 215 pounds. The son of Jewish immigrants, Greenberg graduated from a high school in the Bronx and played one semester for New York University. He had a tryout with the New York Giants, but manager John McGraw thought Greenberg was too clumsy. Despite this rejection, Greenberg received lucrative offers from the Yankees and the Senators. With the Yankees, Greenberg saw little future as a first baseman if he had to wait to play behind Lou Gehrig. He turned down both those offers and signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1930. He appeared in one game that season for the Tigers, picking up a single at-bat.

DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION, there was no greater slugger than Tigers Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg. Breaking in with Detroit 70 years ago this summer, he powered the Tigers to back-to-back pennants in 1934 and 1935, capturing an American League MVP Award in the latter campaign as the Tigers won their first-ever world championship over the Chicago Cubs. Despite losing more than four full seasons to military service, and another to injury, he paced the junior circuit in homers and RBI four times each and carried Detroit to its second world title after returning from the Army in 1945. Yet, Greenberg is seldom mentioned in the same breath as other great sluggers from this era such as Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, even though his exploits not only equalled theirs, but often surpassed them in terms of offensive production. Mostly it's because of where he played, but also because he was one of the game's quiet giants who drove himself to stardom with one of the greatest work ethics that baseball has ever seen.
