BaseballLibrary.com by The Idea Logical Company, Inc. Submissions Celebrating Hank Greenberg by Harvey Frommer Four times he led the American League in home run hitting. In 1938, he blasted 58 - no player had hit more in a season up to that point in time except for Babe Ruth . He starred in the majors for more than a decade and batted .313 for his career. He missed four and a half years to serve in WWII. He closed out his career in 1947 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates . He blasted 25 home runs that season, most of them into a section of the outfield known as "Greenberg Gardens." In 1956, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He passed away 30 years later. His name was Henry Benjamin Greenberg, but he was better known as Hank Greenberg "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a documentary film by Aviva Kempner is a loving and beautifully done tribute to a great player and goes into an in depth treatment about all he had to overcome to prevail. The film opens with Mandy Patinkin singing a Yiddish rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while street scenes of young boys playing baseball in the Bronx in the 1930s enter the screen. The son of Romanian immigrants, Greenberg grew up Jewish in the Bronx and went on to star at James Monroe High School.

In 1947 the Brooklyn Dodgers broke baseball's color barrier when they brought Jackie Robinson into the major leagues. The same year saw the retirement of Hank Greenberg who was the first great Jewish superstar. Hank consoled Jackie that year, pushed him to persevere, and assured him things would work out for Jackie in the end as they had for Hank. Robinson listened, calling Greenberg "a high class gentleman."

But back in a time when anti-Semitism was much more prevalent and overt, he was the first Jew (or the first to admit he was Jewish) to become a baseball starand to make the Baseball Hall of Fame. Particularly after the Holocaust, Greenberg's physical strengthin contrast to the images of skeletal, starving Jews in the concentration campsand his courage to withstand anti-Semitism in the baseball stadiums, roused Jews throughout the country to root for him and kvell (swell with pride). Anyone wanting to experience the impact Greenberg had, can live through it vicariously in the engaging, lively new documentary, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, which you can look for at your local Jewish film festival.

Year In Review "The team was fighting for first place, and I was probably the only batter in the lineup who was not in a slump. But in the Jewish religion, it is traditional that one observe the holiday solemnly, with prayer. One should not engage in work or play. And I wasn't sure what to do." - Hank Greenberg B aseball Almanac is pleased to present an incredibly informative article about Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax how they were portrayed "In the Mainstream Media." Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax In the Mainstream Media Author: Brian Moynahan ©. Published: 2003. Appeared On: Baseball Almanac. Over the last one hundred years, many professional baseball players have made the decision not to participate in games on important religious holidays. Of the two major world religions (Christianity and Judaism) that have permeated the National Pastime, the one with the more noticeable impact has been Judaism. Since Lipman Pike first played for $20 a week in 1866, countless Jews have sought some balance between America’s national game and preexisting religious obligations. Two of these cases stand out more than most, however, largely because of the stature of the players involved.

Career Batting Record A right-handed first baseman, Greenberg put up some amazing RBI figures during his career and once challenged Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season. The 6-foot-3 1/2, 210-pound Greenberg starred in basketball as well as baseball in high school, then signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers that allowed him to enter New York University in 1929. However, he left school in the spring of 1930 to pursue his baseball career. Greenberg had just one at-bat with the Tigers that year and didn't rejoin the team until 1933, when he became a starter. He led the AL in doubles with 63 in 1934, when he hit .339 with 26 home runs and 139 RBI to help lead the Tigers into the World Series. Despite Greenberg's .321 average and 7 RBI, Detroit lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was named the league's most valuable player in 1935. He hit .328 that season and led the league with 36 home runs and 170 RBI. The Tigers won the World Series, but Greenberg suffered a broken wrist in the second game. The wrist was broken again early in the 1936 season and Greenberg appeared in only 12 games. However, he came back with 40 home runs and 183 RBI, one short of Lou Gehrig's AL record, in 1937 and the following year he hit 58 home runs to tie Jimmy Foxx's record for a right-handed hitter.
