The showcase home of the Birmingham Barons since 1988, the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium enters its 16th season of use in 2003. The Barons played their first official game at the Met on April 16, 1988 against the Greenville Braves.
The Met features 12 luxury stadium suites, a large banquet area overlooking the 3rd base line, two picnic areas (left and right field) and two full-size press boxes (baseball and football). Parking is provided for approximately 3,000 cars.
Recent improvements include a state-of-the-art video scoreboard and new catering facilities for Diamond Creations. Also, the Met received a rebuilt infield surface, a new warning track and an addition of the Barons Clubhouse Shop in the concourse.
The Hoover Met is owned by the City of Hoover, and the Barons serve as the facility managers and primary tenant. The Met is also home to several other events during the year, including Hoover High School football and baseball games, concerts, circuses, high school band competitions and food festivals. Prior to the 1996 season, the Barons signed a 10-year extension of the Hoover Met lease with a pair of 5-year options.

February 2, 2003 CARSON, Calif. The 2003 Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team broke in the new Toro Field by pushing across 23 runs against the alumni in a 23-1 game of fun Sunday afternoon at the 16th Annual Robert Wing Memorial Alumni Game. Prior to the game, the program honored alum's present from the 1986 squad, which captured the first-ever CCAA Championship in program history. Former greats present from the '86 team included: Fred Hanker, Mike Brocki, Chris Plank, Mike Perryman, 12-year major league veteran Craig Grebeck and former Toros assistant coach Steve Boaz. The ceremonial ribbon cutting followed with both the 1986 and 1994 CCAA championship teams doing the honors along with several CSUDH administrators. All in all, it was a day of great fun, memories and a lot of reminiscing for everyone in attendance. In the game, senior DH Frank Perez went 3-for-3 with a double and two long blasts over the left field wall. Junior Nick Sloey added three doubles while junior transfer Zac Cort went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple. The alum lone run of the game came in the sixth inning on an Eric Martin mammoth solo homerun into the parking lot over the right field wall.

Compiled from Times wires Jays new left-hander has a sore shoulder TORONTO Left-hander Mike Sirotka, acquired by the Blue Jays from the White Sox Sunday, has a sore shoulder and will go through rehab, his new team said Friday. Sirotka, obtained in a six-player deal that sent David Wells to the White Sox, admitted after the trade that he had shoulder stiffness. He was examined Friday in Florida by Steve Mirabello, who found a tight capsule in the shoulder but no instability. An MRI confirmed the diagnosis, and Mirablello recommended stretching and rehab. He expects Sirotka to be ready for opening day. Sirotka, 15-10 with a 3.79 ERA with Chicago, hyperextended his left elbow during his final regular-season start last season. While pitching for major-league All-Stars in a post-season tour of Japan, Sirotka favored the elbow and strained the shoulder.

Hamstring strain puts Gwynn back on DL
LOS ANGELES Tony Gwynn was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained right hamstring. This is the 10th time the Padres rightfielder has gone on the disabled list. He played in 36 games last season after surgery on his left knee. "It is tough for him. It was something he wanted avoid all year," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We felt like it was going to be at least 10 days, so we didn't want to be that short-handed. We probably could have taken a chance not putting him on the DL, and I don't think he wanted to go on. But it makes sense. We're definitely going to miss him." The injury occurred in the sixth inning Friday. Gwynn felt the hamstring pull while rounding first on a hit down the leftfield line. He tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown out by the Dodgers' Gary Sheffield.

Not exactly like Sinatra sang it, but The Guy In The Stands gets his reasoning if not his rhyme. New York, New York. Yankee Stadium. Baseball's Carnegie Hall. Rookies like Hillenbrand, who has hit in 22 of 24 games (.319) despite never having played above Class AA before this season, are making it everywhere this spring. Notebooks Baseball Notebook: Long ball answers to a short question: When will it end? Sunday, October 08, 2000 So you're under the impression that because Sammy Sosa led the major leagues with "only" 50 home runs this season that the home run craze of 1997-99 might finally be subsiding? Think again, deluded one. The Guy In the Stands can rely on the cold, hard numbers. A record 5,693 balls left parks in 2000, breaking the record of 5,528 set last season. Which broke the record of 5,064 set the season before that. Sixteen players hit 40 or more, a record 47 hit at least 30. But theses make The Guy sound like recording secretary of the Loyal Order of Rotisserians. The signature clue in the Season of 2000 that the home run will remain en vogue long after fans at ballparks grow tired of barking to the Baha Men came out of the offices of the Chicago White Sox in late August. The White Sox (95-67) won the American League Central Division. They led the AL in hitting (.286). They led the major leagues in runs (978). They shattered the single-season club record (198) with 216 home runs.

January 24, 2003 Courtesy Cal State Dominguez Hills Sports Information Office CARSON, Calif. The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball alumni will help christen its new baseball field on Sunday, February 2 at the 16th Annual Robert Wing Memorial Alumni Baseball Game. Former Toro great and 12-year major league veteran Craig Grebeck is scheduled to throw out the very first pitch at the new Toro Field. Grebeck became the Toros first-ever First Team All-American in 1986 after leading CSUDH to its first-ever CCAA title and a berth in the NCAA West Regional Championship. He, along with former Toro baseball greats Mike Brocki (2B), Fred Hanker (3B) and Kevin Whalen (1B), helped form arguably the best infield ever in CSUDH history. Grebeck was signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox in August of 1986 and broke into the majors with the White Sox in 1990. It was during the 1990 season that Grebeck hit his first major league home run against Texas' Nolan Ryan on August 10.

Today we learn that the greatness of ex-Jay Dave Martinez, after 16 seasons with eight teams (what it is I have about journeyman outfielders who never quite lived up to early billing, I don't know) has doffed his cap for the last time as a major leaguer.

Land of rising stars Sure, it's early. But it isn't too early to pass this judgment: Ichiro Suzuki and Tsuyoshi Shinjo can style, not to mention play this-here game a little. Suzuki isn't finding American League pitchers any more challenging than those chuckers who were starting to bore him in Japan. Shinjo already has shown the Mets he can run, hit, throw and wear flashy orange arm bands like he belongs in New York. All of which leads to another question: What took so long to give Japanese position players a chance? April Madness: Two weeks into the season, Mark Grudzielanek has five home runs. His career high? Eight. The Twins are in first place. The A's are in last place. Jeff Fassero has six saves for the Cubs. Antonio Alfonseca, Armando Benitez, Trevor Hoffman and Matt Mantei have three among them.
