Grove, Charlie Gehringer, Al Simmons, lefty gomez, Connie Mack Japanese researcherssuggest that lefty s love affair with Japan may have gone beyond baseball.

John Holway the japanese insider LEFTY O'DOUL By John B. Holway Some time this summer Lefty O'Doul will enter the pantheon of Japan's Hall of Famers. He certainly was one of the important figures in the development of the Japanese professional game, and he made a key contribution to one of the ten best games ever played in Japan, a game I saw back in 1953. Lefty first visited Japan many times between 1934 and 1953. Was it his love of the game or something else that drew him back again and again? O'Doul first visited Japan in 1934 with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Charlie Gehringer, Al Simmons, Lefty Gomez, Connie Mack etc. They won 17 straight including 1-0 over teenager Eiji Sawamura, who whiffed Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, and Gehringer in a row. He returned after the war with his San Francisco Seals in 1949, and again in 1951 with an all-star squad including Joe DiMaggio, who hit the last home run of his career on the tour. Lefty made his last visit with DiMag and Marilyn Monroe in 1953. After a tour in Korea, I was stationed in Tokyo that autumn, when Leo Durocher and the NY Giants visited. That spring the Kyojin (Giants) had taken spring training in America. They won only one exhibition, 9-7 over New York when little shortstop Saburo Hrai hit a two-run homer. A little submarine baller, Tatsumi Otomo, beat Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League but lost to the St Louis Browns 40-3. They must have learned something, though, because they came home and won the pennant by 16 games. Otomo won 27 games and lost seven in the short (130-game) season, plus three more wins in the Japan Series.

All-Star Game returns to South Side Home-field advantage in the World Series aside, the 74th All-Star Game has the makings of classic when you consider the previous three Midsummer Classics played at Comiskey Park. 1933 All-Star Game American League 4, National League 2 Box Score R H E National American X Naturally, Babe Ruth homered in the first All-Star Game. AP Baseball's newest contribution to the glamour and romance of American sports, the All-Star Game, made its debut on July 6, 1933, at Chicago's Comiskey Park. It was initiated at the insistence of Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune , to coincide with the celebration of Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition. By the 1930's, baseball had become a major part of our American culture and the exposition provided a perfect setting. Many did not believe that the game could live up to the fan's expectations (although everyone was eager to see a novel concept in action). The idea of a single game made up of the most glittering assemblage of ball-playing talent ever brought together on the diamond at one time, seemed too good to be true. In 1933 and 1934, All-Star teams were selected by the managers and the fans. The National League's John McGraw and American League's Connie Mack were chosen to lead a lineup of big hitters, including Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and the one and only Babe Ruth.

1) Jackie Robinson breaks color barrier, 1947

With the first pitch of the 1947 season by Brooklyn's Joe Hatten, Robinson took his place in history as the first black major league player in more than six decades. The 28-year-old Robinson, who broke the color barrier in the Dodgers' 5-3 opening day victory over Boston, played first base and went 0-for-3 off Johnny Sain, although he did reach base on an error and scored the winning run. 2) Baseball lights up in Cincinnati, 1935

History of the MLB All-Star game - 1938 National League 4,
American League 1 Baseball had a glamorous new hero Cincinnati lefty Johnny Vander Meer. Never a big winner, he had electrified baseball that summer by pitching back-to-back no-hitters against the Boston Bees and Brooklyn Dodgers. "An unbreakable record, I think," Vander Meer said. "You'd have to pitch three in a row to top it." With the All-Star Game being played in Cincinnati, he drew the start gave up one hit in three innings. The AL starter for the fifth time in six years was Lefty Gomez, who gave up two hits and one unearned run in three innings. The game is memorable, though, for Leo Durocher's bunted home run. Frank McCormick had opened the seventh with a single off Lefty Grove. Durocher, the next batter, was ordered to sacrifice. He did and third baseman Jimmie Foxx charged in, made the scoop and threw the ball into right field. Joe DiMaggio, in right in deference to Earl Averill, raced in, picked up the ball and fired home. That throw sailed over catcher Bill Dickey's head, allowing McCormick to score. Meanwhile Durocher never stopped running until he reached home. Box Score: Americans AB R H RBI
