Books about ALS Robyn's Race!!! e-mail the Webmaster Baseball's Iron Man Henry Louis Gehrig was born in New York City on June 19, 1903. His parents, although very poor, tried to provide the best care for their only surviving son. Lou was the only one of four children to survive childhood. For this reason, he was very caring and kind. He was a model son, never getting into trouble and always working hard. Baseball did not come naturally to him at a young age. It wasn't until he went to school until he began to improve as a baseball player. Once in school, he began to shine. He started his college career at Colombia University. He was advised the summer before his freshman year to play minor league baseball by New York Giants Manager Joe McGraw. He was to use a different name, in hope that he would not get caught in this illegal activity. He played and got caught. He was banned from college athletics for his freshman year from 1921 to 1922. Gehrig played football following the suspension in 1922 and played baseball in 1923. Following his college season, he was signed and played for Hartford, the team for which he played illegally. At the end of playing with Hartford, he was called up to the majors in September and although he played extremely well, he was not placed on the World Series roster. This brief, but successful stint with the Yankees would be the beginning of his illustrious career. He played for Hartford again in 1924 and batted .369. Because of his performance in 1924, he was assigned the job of starting first baseman for the Yankees in 1925.

The Iron Horse This is not a long biography of Gehrig, which is good if you like quick reading. It brings out the character in the quiet consistant ballplayer who played second fiddle on a great baseball dynasty. It is about how Lou Gehrig lived, how he played, and how he died, with a lot of great pictures as well. His tragic death shocked a nation, and his life was turned into a movie shortly after. This is the story of the greatest first baseman of all time. Lou Gehrig: The Story of a Great Man Published in Audio CD by Silver Birch Productions (15 December, 2002)

Adler. A "must-have" for school libraries, Adler's compelling story of a Yankee legend will appeal to all readers boys and girls, young and old. A great tool for teaching compassion and good citizenship! Plaaaaay ball! This week as those words echo in ballparks across the land is a great time to take a look back in time. The year is 1903: "1903 was a year of great beginnings. Henry Ford sold his first automobile and the Wright Brothers made the first successful flight in an airplane. In baseball, the first World Series was played. The team later known as the Yankees moved from Baltimore to New York. And on June 19, 1903, Henry Louis Gehrig was born. He would become one of the greatest players in baseball history." So begins Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man , a new biography from the pen of David A. Adler (and the presses of Gulliver Books/Harcourt Brace). Adler's book tells the inspirational story of one of the greatest ballplayers of all time. It's the stuff from which movies are made!

In 1935, Yankee slugger Lou Gehrig was at the peak of his play. With Babe Ruth not a Yankee anymore (he was finishing out his career with the Boston Braves), the Yankees were Gehrig's team.
That year, Lou's beloved wife Eleanor collaborated with a popular songwriter of the era, Fred Fisher, to write an ode to her husband entitled, "I Can't Get To First Base With You."
Gehrig's facsimile signature appears on his left arm on the sheet music. On his right arm, on this copy, Lou signed his name.

Lou Gehrig:
Farewell to Baseball, July 4, 1939
delivered by Lou Gehrig, on July 4, 1939 Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans. Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert; also the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barow; to have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins; then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology the best manager in baseball today Joe McCarthy! Sure, I'm lucky. When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift, that's something! When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies, that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles against her own daughter, that's something. When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body, it's a blessing! When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that's the finest I know.

With a career average of .340 and 493 home runs, he played in a record-setting 2,130 consecutive games and was elected to the Hall of Fame. He was robbed of his superb physical skills as a relatively young man by ALS, the degenerative disease now known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease", and died in 1941. Ray Robinson re-creates the life of this legendary ballplayer and also provides an insightful look at baseball through the Depression years, including all the great players of that era Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Miller Huggins, and more. PEOPLE IN AMERICA - Lou Gehrig
By Jerilyn Watson
Broadcast: March 28, 2004 (THEME) ANNCR: Now, the V-O-A Special English program, PEOPLE IN AMERICA. A North American Major League baseball record was established in Nineteen-Thirty-Nine. The man who set it played in two-thousand-one-hundred-thirty games without missing one. In Nineteen-Ninety-Five, the record was broken by Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles. But there is not much chance that the man who set the first record will be forgotten. Today Shirley Griffith and Steve Ember tell about Lou Gehrig whose record lasted for fifty-six years. (THEME) VOICE ONE: Lou Gehrig was born on June Nineteenth, Nineteen-Oh-Three. He was a huge baby. He weighed six-and-one-third kilograms. His parents, Heinrich and Christina Gehrig, had come to America from Germany. They worked hard. But they always had trouble earning enough money. Lou loved to play baseball games on the streets of New York City, where he grew up. Yet he did not try to play on any sports teams when he entered high school. He thought of himself as a ball player only for informal games with friends. Then one of Lou's high-school teachers heard that he could hit the ball very hard. The teacher ordered Lou to come to one of the school games.
