Lou Gehrig's Disease Hits Vets
April 29, 2004
(Photo: CBS/AP)
ALS, which attacks nerves that control muscles, affects an estimated 30,000 people in the United States, and about 5,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. One of its most famous victims was baseball great Lou Gehrig.
(AP)
Men who served in the U.S. military during the last century appear to have an unusually high risk of dying from Lou Gehrig's disease, but experts are puzzled over why, and are uncertain whether the apparent hazard is real.
The surprising finding comes from a study of men veterans from World War I through Vietnam. It concludes they are about 60 percent more likely than non-veterans to get the often fatal illness, known formally as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
Even with the increased risk, however, the disease is still rare for veterans and non-veterans alike.
Dr. Susan Mather, environmental hazards chief at the Department of Veterans Affairs, called the discovery intriguing but added, “This study to me only raises more questions than it answers.”

Gehrig legacy one of irony
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
Irony, as we know, is part of life. And death. Is there a better word to use regarding Lou Gehrig? Think of his nickname: "The Iron Horse." It implies endurance. It recalls an indestructible man, one who never called in sick for almost 14 years 2,130 consecutive games, as if we could ever forget that number? Lou Gehrig, a man who made us forget Wally Pipp, also introduced us to a tragic disease. And yet, at age 35, in what should have been the prime of his life, the Yankees first baseman contracted an incurable disease. Two years later, at 37, The Iron Horse was dead. More irony. What is remembered most about the rock-sturdy man whom Los Angeles Times columnist Jim Murray called "Gibraltar in cleats?" Is it his 493 homers, his 1,990 runs batted in, his .340 batting average, his American League record 184 RBI in one year, his major league record of 23 grand slams? Is it his 13 consecutive seasons with 100 RBI and 100 runs scored, his 200 hits and 100 walks in the same season seven times, his two MVPs, his Triple Crown? Is it his 12 consecutive seasons of hitting .300, his 10 seasons of at least 30 homers, his averaging 153 RBI over an 11-year stretch, his .632 lifetime slugging percentage?

Before he was the Iron Horse, Gehrig he was known as Columbia Lou. He attended Columbia College from 1921 to 1923, playing both football and baseball. Gehrig's record-breaking home runs for the Lions bounced into the Journalism building and landed at Alma Mater's feet, more than 400 feet away from the home plate then situated at the southeast corner of South Field. He also pitched for the Lions, striking out a team record 17 in the spring of 1923. After his sophomore year, Gehrig signed with the Yankees for a 1,500 dollar bonus. In later years, Gehrig recalled why he had abandoned his intention to go on from Columbia to become an engineer: "There's no getting away from it," he told the New York Times in 1939, "a fellow has to eat. At the end of my sophomore year my father was taken ill and we had to have money. I had been playing on the college ball team and I had had eight offers to join professional clubs. So when there was no money coming in there was nothing for me to do but sign up." Gehrig returned to campus in the late 1930s as a guest lecturer at a Teachers College physical-education course. She was in Waterloo, or Des Moines She and her husband were rather well off, and had many friends including many ball players. I got the ball from a man named Jack, Kay was his grandmothers sister. Kay Passed away June 27, 1980 and left the ball to Jack.
By looking at the inscriptions on this ball, you can just imagine that here is the Babe, and Lou possibly flirting with this attractive young lady at some function. I have spoken to several of the leading authenticators of Gehrig signed baseballs, and none of them have seen a ball signed H.L. Gehrig, and have told me I have a unique item.
