Marylanders are so crazy about baseball, it’s surprising that “America’s pastime” isn’t Maryland’s official state sport. (That honor goes to jousting, by the way.) But baseball is the sport that boasts the most museums and memorials throughout the state, including the following:
Oriole Park at Camden Yards
When this state-of-the-art ballpark opened in 1992, it was all the rage among baseball fans. The stadium was designed using elements from some of the other great American ballparks. Visitors can learn about the architectural elements of the stadium and some great information about the team on a behind-the-scenes tour of the ballpark. Stops include the press box, a corporate skybox and the dugout. Oriole Park bears the distinction of being the only ballpark to serve crab cakes – and as an added taste treat, fans find former Oriole Boog Powell manning his barbeque cooker among the food stalls. 333 W. Camden Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, 410-685-9800, www.theorioles.com.
Babe Ruth, one of the most famous players in the history of the game, was born in his grandparents’ rowhouse in Baltimore in 1895. The house has been preserved and transformed into a museum that pays homage to “The Sultan of Swat,” the Baltimore Orioles and the sport of baseball in Maryland through photos, film clips and memorabilia. 216 Emory Street, Baltimore, MD 21230, 410-727-1539, www.baberuthmuseum.com

on the occasion of
The Memorial Field Dedication
August 8, 2000

Lakewood City Council Dear Friends, One of the joys of living in a small town is that there is a keen awareness of the contributions made by its residents. For any number of reasons, Lakewood is unique among Greater Cleveland's suburbs in that, despite its size, the city retains a small town atmosphere. It is important that Lakewood continue to recognize the contributions its residents have made whether they be in service to their country, government, education, the arts, entertainment or athletics. By recognizing those individuals, it helps each of us put into perspective our own actions and deeds, as humbling as that may be. Recognizing those individuals gives the community and each one of us a sense of dignity and pride, traits that are often lost in today's world. Finally, it lets neighbors and friends know that we care about and appreciate one another. On behalf of the citizens of the City of Lakewood, it is with great pleasure that we dedicate the baseball field at Kauffman Park in honor of Jimmie Foxx who, after retiring from professional baseball, chose to raise his family here, unselfishly volunteered his time on Lakewood's sandlot baseball fields, and who blessed us with his humanity. Sincerely

John Holway Other Leagues (Ladies Leagues) MORE PEPPER TALES: BEER AND CHMPAGNE WITH JIMMIE FOXX By John B. Holway In 1952 we had a great ball club. We had the remarkable Weaver sisters Jean, Joanne, and Betty Foss, her married name. Fossie played leftfield and hit .400-something; no one had done that in our league before. She ws built like a a man, very strong and big; she could have competed in a man's league. I don't mean she acted like a man she was a good-looking gal and married. But you threw a high pitch, she could reach up and club that ball. And she could run. Jimmie Foxx was our manager. At that time he had hit more home runs than anyone except Babe Ruth. He had arms like tree trunks. When he took hitting practice, he put two two girls in front of the pitcher to protect her, cleared the infield, and hit the ball on a line, maybe four feet off the ground, and it just atayed that high all the way to the outfield. He'd hit a ball once, you'd pick it up, it was flat. Jimmie was 44 years old then. If the majors had had a DH rule, I'm sure he could have stayed in the big leagues longer. There's a lot of similarities between Foxx and the character Tom Hanks played in the movie, "A League of Their Own." Jimmie was a great guy, he just wasn't into coaching girls. And he was not too happy about being out of Organized Ball, even if he had himself to blame.
