NICE GUYS DON'T ALWAYS FINISH LAST
    Jimmie Foxx
One of baseball's all-time great sluggers, Jimmie Foxx also ranks up there with the all-time great nice guys in baseball history. The native of Maryland's Eastern shore was a baseball prodigy, showing amazing power at an early age. He always acknowledged that he gained his amazing strength from working on his families farm. After being scouted by Frank "Home Run" Baker, he signed with Baker's Easton Club of the Eastern Shore League. There he becamse Baker's protégé. On recommendation from Baker, Connie Mack signed Foxx to play for his A's. After years in Philadelphia playing under the penurious Connie Mack, he finally started making good when he was traded to Boston. Tom Yawkey, who always paid his players well, even gave Foxx a share in gate receipts. Universally liked, Almost everyone loved him, from Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth to Ted Williams. He always went out of the way to befriend new teammates and rookies.
In July of 1967, after years of bad investments and ill health, Foxx died on the way to the hospital after he choked on a piece of meat in the backyard of his brother. By that time, he was a beaten and broken man, and those close to him felt that Jimmie had finally just given up, and did not have the will to live anymore. It was a very sad ending to a simply great, great guy.

    Jimmie Foxx Posters
Here are Jimmie Foxx posters and photos now being auctioned off at eBay . This is about the best place we've found for getting the poster you want at the right price. If there are no listings above, it could be that nobody is selling them right now, but it could also be a bug in the search. You may want to click over and search for his name, and/or number 3, and/or for the Red Sox (or Athletics, Phillies, or Cubs). If you still can't find the Jimmie Foxx poster you're looking for, you could ask in the Boston Red Sox (or Athletics Phillies , or Cubs ) discussion forum if anybody else knows who sells them. By the way, if you're looking to sell a Jimmie Foxx poster , good old eBay is probably still your best bet. Thanks to eBay's extremely active sports memorabilia auctions, it's easy for anyone to auction off their baseball posters, photos, and other collectibles without a dealer getting in the middle and taking 50%. Click here for eBay , or eBay Canada , if that's where you're located.

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

    DOUBLE X
Jimmie Foxx was one of Baseball's all-time great power hitters. The slugging first baseman belted 534 home runs over 20 seasons, hitting 30 or more a record 12 successive seasons. Double-X walloped 58 for the A's in 1932, only to miss Babe Ruth's mark when rain erased two others. He won the Triple Crown the following year when he repeated as MVP. Foxx had a 50-homer season with the Red Sox in 1938, but Hank Greenberg's 58 cost him a second Triple Crown.
