DOUBLE X: JIMMIE FOXX Jimmie Foxx was a very powerful fellow. He was a right-handed hitter and a low-ball hitter, and could hit a ball a mile. He was a very good friend of mine. Jimmie hit knuckleballs very well, and it was tough for the infielders and outfielders to catch the vicious line drives off his bat because the baseball, when hit, did not rotate at all. Some of those balls flew past the infielders or outfielders as if Hoyt Wilhelm had thrown the ball himself. Jimmie hit 58 home runs one year and he hit balls farther than anyone. He was a dangerous hitter and an excellent first baseman as well. He had a lifetime batting average of .325. He compiled an incredible .428 on-base percentage and a career .609 slugging percentage, finishing with 534 career home runs, 1,351 runs scored, and 1,922 RBIs. Most of all, however, Jimmie Foxx was a likable guy. I don’t think Jimmie had any enemies. He died fairly young, and his nickname “Double X” was because his last name had two x’s in it. Jimmie had a son who played in the same league I managed, the American Amateur Baseball Congress League in Lakewood, Ohio, for college boys. He was a third baseman, a tall kid, taller than his dad, but not as powerful or as muscular.

Jimmie Foxx biography
James Emory Foxx was born in Sudlersville, Maryland on October 22, 1907. At the age of 10, Foxx ran away from home and attempted to enlist in the Army as a drummer boy. When the Army rejected him, he then turned his attention to sports. He was a member of his high school baseball team and played various positions that later helped him in his major league career. Frank Baker, who was managing Easton in the Maryland Eastern Shore League was impressed with Foxx's power and ability. Baker asked Foxx to come to a tryout. Foxx had to get his father's permission to quit school and go to Easton. He had hoped to play third base or to pitch but Easton was short on catchers and placed him behind the plate instead. Foxx was a success from the start. His skills drew the interest of the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Athletics. Baker advised Foxx to play for Connie Mack and the A's. Foxx was just 17 when he entered the major league. Mack already had Mickey Cochrane and Cy Perkins as catchers so Foxx was on the bench in 1924. In 1925, he spent most of the season at Providence. By 1929, the A's placed Foxx at first base. The A's won three straight American League pennants after that. In 1932, Foxx belted in 58 home runs and won the first of 3 Most Valuable Player awards. The following year he won the Triple Crown with a batting average of .356, 163 RBIs, and 48 home runs. He also won his second Most Valuable Player award in 1933. Foxx refused to sign a new contract with the A's following the 1935 season after a salary dispute. Mack then sold Foxx to the Boston Red Sox for $150,000.

Jimmie Foxx
A Great Community for a Great Baseball Player Jimmy Foxx, an astute baseball hitter with a keen eye for the strike zone, also had excellent vision for choosing a good community. considered by many as one of the greatest power hitters in baseball history, Jimmie picked Lakewood as the city to make his home and raise a family. "Double X" or "The Beast" as he was sometimes called, was voted the American League's most Valuable Player three times, and hit 58 homeruns in 1932. He won the rare Triple Crown Award in 1933 and, at the time of this Park's dedication, was 10th on the alltime homerun list with 534 round trippers. he played for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Athletics, appearing in three World Series. His lifetime slugging average was an incredible 609! In 1951, at the age of 43, he received Baseball's greatest honor when he was elected into the Hall of Fame. He died in 1967.

Jimmie Foxx
James Emory Foxx October 22 July 21 ) was, up until Mark McGwire 's glory days in the late , the greatest right-handed power hitter to ever play the game of baseball Born in Sudlersville, Maryland , Foxx (nicknamed "Double X" and "The Beast") played baseball in high school and dropped out to join a minor league team managed by former Philadelphia Athletics great Home Run Baker. Foxx had hoped to pitch or play third base, but since the team was short on catchers, Foxx moved behind the plate. He immediately drew interest from the Athletics and New York Yankees . Foxx signed with the A's and made his major league debut in at age 17. The A's catching duties were already capably filled by Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane , so by , Foxx was splitting time between catching, first base, and the outfield. In , installed as the A's regular first baseman, Foxx had his breakthrough year, batting .354 and hitting 33 home runs. In , Foxx hit 58 home runs, which stood as the single-season record for a right-handed batter for 56 years until Mark McGwire hit 70 in 1998. He followed up in

Career Batting Record Foxx was 6-foot and 195 pounds, but he seemed bigger, probably because he could hit the ball so far. He joined the AL's Philadelphia Athletics in 1925 as a catcher, but didn't play much during his first few seasons because Philadelphia already had the best catcher in baseball, Mickey Cochrane. In his infrequent appearances, Foxx showed that he could hit, and in 1929 he became Philadelphia's starting first baseman. He hit .354 with 33 home runs and 117 RBI. It was the first in a record streak of twelve years in which he hit 30 or more home runs and drove in 100 or more runs. Foxx had a .335 average with 37 home runs and 156 RBI in 1930, then batted .291 with 30 homers and 120 RBI in 1931, as the Athletics won their third straight pennant. In their three World Series appearances, Foxx hit .344, with 4 home runs, 11 runs scored, and 11 RBI. Philadelphia owner-manager Connie Mack began to dismantle the team in 1932 because of financial problems. The Athletics started to slide, but Foxx didn't. He led the AL with 58 home runs and 169 RBI, batting .364. Foxx lost two home runs that were hit in games called by rain before they became official, which kept him from tying Babe Ruth's famous record of 60 in a season. He was also deprived of the triple crown because the batting title was awarded to Dale Alexander, even though Alexander didn't have the required 400 at-bats for the season.
