Expensive Love, (I John 4:9-10)
When our son Doug was little, he was really into collecting baseball cards. Actually, so was I at that age - except they were on stone tablets back then. I grew up in Chicago, and I loved the Chicago White Sox - and my favorite player, Nelson - or Nellie - Fox. Nellie was their all-star second basemen who was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Now those baseball card companies print a lot of the less-known players, and a comparative few of the stars. So, try as I would, I could not get a Nellie Fox card. I could get 6 of every other White Sox player, but Nellie Fox - not a chance.
One day Doug and I were at a big baseball card show - I was really just along for the ride. Then, at one table, there he was - Nellie Fox. I told Doug - who was about 10 years old at the time- about my childhood search for that card. I wasn't going to spend money on it - I was just happy to see the old boy, just under glass. I had come to doubt whether such a card had ever existed. Doug and I split up at that point, and he started cruising the tables with the modest savings he had from his allowances. About 20 minutes later, I felt someone tapping on my arm - it was my son. He was reaching up, holding something in his hand. He said, "Here, Dad. I love you." And there in his hand was that Nellie Fox card. He had spent everything he had on it. I was wiped out. I felt very loved.
My son is in his 20s now - but that moment will never be forgotten. That moment he spent everything he had to show his love . . . when I felt his deep love through his great sacrifice. It's what God wants to do for you. The word love may be a tough one for you - too often, it's meant disappointment . . . betrayal . . .paying the price to get it, but coming up empty . . .and too many lonely times. Then you may be ready for the one love that will never disappoint you . . . never betray you . . . never leave you alone.

This summer were at a Fenway Park for a game against the White Sox excellent game, by the way, Pedro won 1-0. Sitting in front of was a couple with their son, who looked 10 or 12. They were from West Virginia. The woman explained that they had offered their son a trip to Disney World but he said no, he'd rather go to Fenway Park and see the Red Sox play. She said it rather proudly, as a sign that her son was growing up with real values. Last year they took him to St. Louis to see Mark McGwire hit his 60th home run. Her son was thrilled to be seeing Pedro pitch today. We talked awhile about how baseball games were deteriorating into "events". A gentleman a few seats over chimed in, "It's the same at Wrigley Field. It's all yuppies with cell phones, they don't even know who's playing any more." "I'm a Phillies fan, but my husband's a White Sox fan," said the woman from West Virginia. Her husband looked over at us, verifying emphatically. "We've had some friction,"she said, "like in '83 [when both teams were in the playoffs], but we get through it. "Do you remember that movie

by George F. Will Guiltlessness. Our fat fifties cars, how we loved them, revved them; no thought of pollution. Exhaust smoke, cigarette smoke, factory smoke, all romance. Romance of consumption at its height.
"When Everyone Was Pregnant" George F. Will. Photo Credit: George Will But big muscular Buicks and other fat fifties cars (for which Ike launched the biggest public works program ever, the Interstate Highway System) were not the best symbol of an American decade of pent-up energy busting loose. Remember Ted Kluszewski's biceps, those huge ham hocks erupting from the then sleeveless uniform jerseys of the Cincinnati Reds? (Or, as that team was called for a while in that Cold War decade, the Redlegs.) Baseball in the fifties carried a big stick. Even shortstops, who once upon a time had been considered inoffensive little guys, got into the act: The Cubs' Ernie Banks won two consecutive MVP awards for seasons (1958, 1959) in which he hit a total of 92 home runs. The Baseball Encyclopedia says Kluszewski was 6'2" and 225 pounds. That was mighty big then, but no more. Arguably the most striking change in baseball in the four decades since then is the sheer scale of the players. In 1953 the Indians' Al Rosen had a monster season: .336, 43 home runs, 145 RBIs. He missed a triple crown by .001, to the Senators' Mickey Vernon. Rosen was considered a "burly slugger." He was 5'101/2" and 180 pounds. Baseball is still, as Bill Veeck said, a game unlike others because to play it you do not need to be either seven feet tall or seven feet wide. But by 1987 Nolan Ryan (6'2", 210 pounds) was smaller than five other teammates on the Astros' pitching staff.

TEAM HISTORY Chicago White Sox Baseball History Chicago White Sox, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central Division of the American League (AL). Originally called the White Stockings, the team plays at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, and wears uniforms of white, black, and silver.
The White Sox won the West Division in 1993 and led the newly formed Central Division in 1994, when a players’ strike ended the season prematurely. In 1983 Chicago had ended a 24-year playoff drought by winning the West Division. Leading the team were sluggers Harold Baines, Carlton Fisk, Ron Kittle, and Greg Luzinski, and pitchers Rich Dotson and LaMarr Hoyt, who both won 20 games. Before 1983 the team’s last postseason appearance came in 1959, with a squad featuring Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox, and Early Wynn.
Chicago fielded several powerful teams during the early 1900s, winning World Series championships in 1906 and 1917. But the club’s success was marred soon afterward by the most infamous affair in major league history—the Black Sox scandal. Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven teammates were banned from baseball for life for their role in throwing the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.
