Nellie Fox Posters
Here are Nellie Fox posters and photos now being auctioned off at eBay . This is about the best place we've found for getting the poster you want at the right price. If there are no listings above, it could be that nobody is selling them right now, but it could also be a bug in the search. You may want to click over and search for his name, and/or number 2, and/or for the White Sox. If you still can't find the Nellie Fox poster you're looking for, you could ask in the Chicago White Sox discussion forum if anybody else knows who sells them. By the way, if you're looking to sell a Nellie Fox poster , good old eBay is probably still your best bet. Thanks to eBay's extremely active sports memorabilia auctions, it's easy for anyone to auction off their baseball posters, photos, and other collectibles without a dealer getting in the middle and taking 50%. Click here for eBay , or eBay Canada , if that's where you're located. Sincerely

Chatter From The Dugout
Nellie
A book and look on baseball's "mighty mite"
Bygone baseball: The unfamiliar, the unusual, the dramatic by C. Philip Francis January 31, 2001 It is not unusual for a ballplayer to make it all the way to the Hall of Fame without spending even one day in the minor leagues, (Dave Winfield and Al Kaline quickly come to mind.), but most work their way up the hard way. Jacob Nelson Fox was certainly one of them. He was not born with the customary athletic muscular body and innate qualities found in a Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, or Ted Williams, but the five-foot nine-inch, 150 pound Nelson Fox, or Nellie, scratched his way from a World War II spring training camp as a teenager all the way to Cooperstown with a tremendous drive to excel. Just in case you need a quick baseball fix before the pre-season games begin this spring, spend some quality reading time with Little Nel - The Nellie Fox Story , an up-close and personal look at Little Nel by David Gough and Jim Bard. Gough, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and the Washington Baseball Historical Society, has taught at Washington Bible College in Maryland and lives in Alexandria, Virginia. You may remember him as the author of Burt Shotton, Dodgers Manager

Little Nel
The Nellie Fox Story
by David Gough and Jim Bard Reviewed by Max Silberman
David Gough and Jim Bard have produced a book about Nellie Fox that goes well beyond his baseball career and introduces the reader to a very fine human being who happened to play baseball. The Nellie Fox journey began in St. Thomas, Pa. on Christmas Day, 1927 and his path to Cooperstown, NY, where he was a 1997 inductee took him through Shibe Park and the Athletics farm system before his glory days with the Chicago White Sox and final years with the Houston Astros, (nee Colt .45s) Philadelphia Athletics Society members (including Nellie Fox's devoted fan and collector, Howard Singer) will remember the trade that sent the future Hall of Famer to the White Sox in October 1949 for catcher Joe Tipton. Tipton played for four American League teams as a back-up catcher, while Fox went on to greatness. A's fans also bemoan the swap of George Kell to the Detroit Tigers earlier in 1946. Barney McCoskey, obtained for Kell gave the A's several very productive years but did not achieve Kell's Hall of Fame status. Although Nellie Fox played only three seasons for the A's (1947-49) readers will recognize many familiar names in the stories about his minor league days in Lancaster, PA and Lincoln, NE, with many future Philadelphia A's.

Nellie Fox
The One That Got Away
by Dale Smith
During his 50-year reign as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, Connie Mack was known for having an uncanny ability to spot potential. Whether on a college diamond, an independent minor league team or through the A's own farm system, Connie just seemed to know which players were going to have Hall of Fame or near Hall of Fame careers. Connie's strategy was to develop and keep the great ones until he could no longer afford them, typically through at least the first half of their career. In 1949, however, at the end of his career, Connie's judgement failed him. As he watched his little second baseman, Nellie Fox, during the 1949 season, he saw nothing special. But very special he turned out to be. Jacob Nelson Fox was born on Christmas Day, 1927 in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania. His father, Jake Fox, was a second baseman and manager of a semipro team. Nellie learned the game almost as soon as he could walk. At 17 years of age in 1945, Nellie was playing pro ball with Lancaster of the Inter-State League. In the military service in 1946, Nellie played again for Lancaster in 1947 and the 19-year-old was up to the Athletics for a cup of coffee at the end of the season. It was at Lincoln in the Western League in 1948 that Nellie gave notice that he deserved to be in the major leagues. He hit .311 while collecting 179 hits and scoring 97 runs. His Lincoln teammate, Bobby Shantz, had a pretty good year himself, winning 18 games while losing only 7 with 212 strikeouts in 214 innings. Both players would make the 1949 Philadelphia Athletics roster.

I think the headline is hilarious!) The irony of this ad with Nellie Fox, his wife, Joanne, and his oldest daughter, Bonnie, is that while Fox loved hunting, Joanne hated the sport and was terrified of guns. One of the many ads Nellie Fox did for Crossman Pellet Guns. This Crossman ad builds of Nellie Fox' name in a slightly more subtle way. A Father's Day ad for Crosman Guns that featured Nellie Fox. An ad in which Nellie Fox endorses Viceroy cigarettes. (Fox, of course, died of cancer, but he wasn't much of a cigarette smoker; he smoked cigars regularly and occasionally a pipe. And of course, he was famous for chewing tobacco.) 1960 Viceroy ad. Among the ballplayers promoting the cigarette was Nellie Fox, lower right. A two-page regional ad for Gunther Beer that toasted Nellie Fox and other athletes. Here's a poster-sized ad of Nellie Fox promoting Favorite Chewing Tobacco.

Baseball Hall of Fame
The Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 1936, the first ball players selected: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Not a bad group.. The first players inducted when the hall opened in Cooperstown, NY, in 1939. They were Grover Cleveland Alexander, Eddie Collins, Lou Gehrig, Willie Keeler, Napoleon Lajoie, Cy Young, George Sisler, and Tris Speaker The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was officially dedicated on June 12, 1939. The game's four ranking executives of the period—Landis, Frick, Harridge and William G. Bramham, President of the National Association, participated in the ribbon-cutting. Of the 25 players who had been elected to the Hall of Fame up to that point, 11 were still living. Between the original dedication in 1939 and the completion of the National Baseball Library expansion, several significant developments had taken place. New wings were opened on July 24, 1950 and on May 10, 1980; and the Hall of Fame Gallery was dedicated on August 4, 1958. The National Baseball Library opened its doors on July 22, 1968 and the Fetzer-Yawkey Building was dedicated on June 10, 1989. An $8 million Library expansion was completed in 1994, linking the library facility to the Hall of Fame Gallery and incorporating exciting new exhibits on the media and on baseball movies
