In many ways his moustache has become synonymous with the great Oakland A's teams which Rollie anchored as the Fireman in the bullpen. Three numbers have been retired by the Oakland Athletics and now grace the outfield wall in Oakland; #9 Reggie Jackson in right field, and #27 Catfish Hunter and #34 Rollie fingers in left. Rollie Fingers ushered in the era of the modern-day closer, using his physical durability, slider and devastating sinking fastball to compile 341 saves, setting a Major League record. Rollie molded the relief pitcher role into the closer, the pitcher relied on to finish out close games. However, it's hardly fair to compare Rollie to the modern-day closer, as Rollie routinely entered games in the 7th inning. Unable to play the private golf course near his Ohio home as a child, Fingers would sneak on the course at night. “We’d go out and putt in the full moon,” Fingers said. “We got kicked off that course a few times.” The story would make a great start to a career in professional golf, and indeed Fingers does now play in professional events. The start of Finger’s golfing life and his new life in golf tournaments, however, is separated by a Hall of Fame baseball career. Fingers, credited with being among the first of the modern breed of relief pitchers in baseball, is among more than 70 celebrities who will play in the 13th annual Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert. It is one of several events Fingers plays every year as he relives some of his childhood fantasies. “When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a professional golfer,” he said. “I loved the game, and I thought about playing (professionally). But then I played a little baseball and everything changed.”
