    Albert Pujols, Meet Joe DiMaggio!

    by Harvey Frommer
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info It is not quite the same, but the St. Louis Cardinals 23-year-old Albert Pujols (as of this writing) has hit in 30 straight games and counting. Only 26 more to catch Joe DiMaggio 's all-time record. But 2003 is not 1941. It was truly remarkable a hit every game for two months, from May 15 through July 17, 1941 in Yankee wins and defeats, in games played in the daytime and those played at night. Single games, doubleheaders, meaningless games and ones that really counted Joe DiMaggio was locked in for 56 straight. And what made the epic feat even more dramatic was that it took place in the summer of '41, a time America was locked into news of the triumphs and tragedies of World War II. The Yankee Clipper started the 1941 season slumping. He managed a single in four at bats on May 15 against Edgar Smith in a game the Yankees lost to the White Sox, 3-1. On May 24 in his final at bat of the game against the Red Sox, DiMaggio singled in two runs. He had a modest ten game hitting streak, but hardly anyone paid it any attention. On May 30th the Yankee centerfielder made three errors in the second game of a double header. He was pressing. In the fifth inning, his fly ball to right was lost in the sun by Boston outfielder

    Joe DiMaggio

Born: November 25, 1914 He is a modern day American icon. An athlete with grace both on and off the field. He is one of the most popular men to ever play America's favorite pastime Joe DiMaggio. Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born in Martine, California on November 25, 1914. His two brothers, Dominic and Vincent, also played major league baseball. DiMaggio's baseball career began in 1932 with the Pacific Coast League. He played in San Francisco until 1936, when he was signed by the New York Yankees. He remained there until he retired in 1951. Mr. DiMaggio served the Yankees as one of the best outfielders ever to play the game. Nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" for his superb fielding ability, DiMaggio also was a great offensive player as well. He set a major league record by establishing a 56 game hitting streak in 1941, which helped earn him the nickname "Joltin' Joe".

This story contributed by Jill Kramer , ESL instructor at the Columbus Literacy Council in Columbus, Ohio. (Thank you, Jill!)
    To the instructor:
Here is a story about the life of Joe DiMaggio, which we hope your students will enjoy reading. If you know anything about baseball, you know that it's a sport in which numbers are important. And so, appropriately, this story and the activities also focus on numbers. The story is provided in two formsboth as complete text, and as a listening text with some of the numbers missing. For beginning and intermediate students, you can give them the incomplete text and have them fill in the numbers as they listen to the story. Following the story are some comprehension questions, a re-telling exercise, and two follow-up activities including an interview and a writing topic. We hope you and your students enjoy these activities!

Joltin' Joe was a hit for all reasons
    By Larry Schwartz

    Special to ESPN.com
Joe DiMaggio was more than the most complete all-around player of his generation. He was more than the player who set one of the game's most cherished records, hitting safely in 56 consecutive games. Baseball has produced many icons, but it has produced only one Joe DiMaggio. Joe DiMaggio hit 361 home runs and struck out only 369 times in his 13-year major-league career. He proved to be the most enduring symbol of baseball greatness. In the almost half a century between his retirement and his death on March 8, he retained his image as America's ultimate hero. What American male wouldn't sell his soul to the devil to duplicate the exacta that Jolting Joe accomplished play center field for the Yankees and marry the sexiest woman on the planet? "Joe DiMaggio is what you get when you build mystique on top of greatness," said Ron Swoboda, the former Met who played a generation after DiMaggio. Though known to be short-tempered in private, DiMaggio refrained from showing such behavior in public. A painfully private person, he was always careful and protective of his image, understanding that it was his legacy.

Career Batting Record Casey Stengel summed up DiMaggio pretty well: "Joe did everything so naturally that half the time he gave the impression he wasn't trying. He had the greatest instincts of any ballplayer I ever saw. He made the rest of them look like plumbers." DiMaggio left high school after one year to work in a fish cannery, then joined the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1933. He hit safely in 61 consecutive games that season, an all-time record for professional baseball. The following year, he suffered a knee injury that made several major league teams lose interest in him. However, the New York Yankees signed him late that year. After one more minor league season, DiMaggio joined the Yankees in 1936 as one of the most highly-touted rookies in history. An ankle injury kept him out of the lineup early on the season. When he finally made his debut on May 3, nearly 25,000 Italian-American fans showed up to wave Italian flags. DiMaggio didn't disappoint anyone, leading the league with 15 triples and batting .323 with 29 home runs and 126 RBI. The Yankees won the first of four consecutive world championships that year. A rightfielder for the first month of his career, DiMaggio moved to centerfield before the season ended and was soon recognized as one of the finest defensive players ever at that position.

an outrageous sports biography of the greatest ball player you would be in awe after the first few pages of this album you cant collect anymore detail than this material my volumes cover 1932-1951 are there more volumes than this ? what is the value of these two volumes any idea i will move this thru my next generation to come unreal ..... these two books capture the miracle of Jolting Joe D he showed up during the Great Depression, a 21 year old kid from San Francisco in 1936 and brightened our lives and moods until the World War began in "41. Returning after the war, despite a painful heel spur that he described as a spike ripping into him he played until "51 and in his quiet modest way had the love of the nation until his life went away yesterday. These volumes show us the mewspapers of the day and interviews and photos galore. A joy to behold and remember his active life. What a loss. Those of us who followed his career at the time and those born well after his retirement have good feelings. Whayt a gentleman! Try to find these booksyou'll be glad you did!!!Joe, you will be missed. Perhaps we have Jim Bouton, Yankee alumnus and author of the classic Ball Four , to thank for this; perhaps someone else would have come along to show the emperor's clothes were less than pristine. But Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's Life the long-anticipated biography of the Yankee Clipper could not, would not, have been written 30 years ago. Even now, in this "enlightened" era, many readers might find this book a cruel intrusion into that place set aside for their cherished beliefs. DiMaggio's talents on the field are never an issue. His career statistics include a batting average of .325, 361 home runs (against 369 strikeouts) and 1,537 RBI. Joltin' Joe was the bridge between the days of Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle. He led the Yankees to championship after championship, appearing on 10 pennant winners during his 13 years. His hitting streak of 56 games is one of the records least likely to be broken. During his reign as baseball's best, he exuded an aura of class and elegance. Life magazine, in what they must have considered forward thinking at the time, featured him in an article which proclaimed that he didn't smell of garlic or talk with an accent: a true American!
