Joe DiMaggio is remembered as one of the game's most graceful athletes — a "picture player" both at bat and in center field. Many rate his 56-consecutive-game hitting streak in 1941 as the top baseball feat of all time. "The Yankee Clipper" used an unusually wide stance in winning two batting championships and three MVP awards. In 13 seasons he amassed 361 homers, averaged 118 RBI annually and compiled a .325 lifetime batting mark. At Baseball's 1969 Centennial Celebration, he was named the game's greatest living player. Did you know ... that in 1933, eight years before his famed 56-game hitting streak, Joe DiMaggio fashioned a 61-game hitting streak with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League? JOE DiMAGGIO
Stan Musial said of him: "There was never a day when I was as good as Joe DiMaggio at his best. Joe was the best, the very best I ever saw." DiMaggio became an American hero at a time when Americans had little to feel heroic about. He was an American idol when America struggled with idealism. This wonderful ballplayer exhibited grace and class in a game that less than two decades prior had been blemished by a gambling scandal. DiMaggio attracted attention years after his retirement not just for his exploits on the diamond, but for his extraordinary traits as an American.

The Yankees replaced his set of World Series rings, which were stolen. (AP) Joe DiMaggio, the fabled slugger and centerfielder of the New York Yankees whose superlative play on the baseball field enshrined him in the hearts of sports fans everywhere and made him a universal symbol of athletic grace and excellence, died at his home in Hollywood, Fla., shortly after midnight, said Morris Engelberg, DiMaggio's long-time friend and attorney. The Associated Press reported that his brother Dominick, two grandchildren and Joe Nacchio, his friend for 59 years, and Engelberg were at his side when he died. DiMaggio's body will be flown to Northern California for burial in his home town of San Francisco, Engelberg told the AP. "DiMaggio, the consummate gentleman on and off the field, fought his illness as hard as he played the game of baseball and with the same dignity, style and grace with which he lived his life,'' the AP quoted Engelberg, DiMaggio's next-door neighbor.

    PETE ROSE
Pete Rose Chases Joe DiMaggio It was a midsummer night in 1978, June 14 th to be exact, when baseball’s best hitter began his assault on the greatest single-season record in baseball history. No man had seriously challenged Joe DiMaggio ’s 56-game hitting streak in the 37 years since he had set it in 1941. No man had ever had the consistency - the drive - the will to get a hit every day. Not until Pete Rose that is. It was in Cincinnati on June 14 th that Rose singled in the first inning off Dave Roberts of the Cubs. Quietly his streak grew, as all streaks do. First to 5 games, then 10 and 15. As he moved past 20 games and then 30, mostly with hits in his first or second at-bats, Rose was making it look easy. But it was far from easy, as Rose proved through out his career, he was a hard worker. As the streak grew, Rose spent more time in the batting cage, perfecting his craft. Soon the media took notice of the streak and a pool of reporters accompanied Rose and the Reds to every game, home and away. On July 19

When baseball mattered the most, no one mattered as much as Joe DiMaggio By Dave Kindred
The Sporting News The death of the Yankee Clipper is a jolt to a nation that reveled in his talent, his grace and his majestic presence
To say aloud the man's name ... Joe DiMaggio ... is to see the world as it was, to see it in black and white, to see a strong man hidden in an old baseball uniform, so much flannel there it's flapping, NEW YORK across the grays, the entwined NY on the pinstriped whites. Say the name aloud ... Joe DiMaggio ... and you hear in its gliding rhythms the music of a time when baseball mattered the most and when the player who mattered the most was the graceful, stylish, silent son of an Italian immigrant fisherman named Giuseppe DiMaggio. Say the god's name aloud and you know, if you know anything, the truth of what the rapscallion/second baseman Billy Martin said of DiMaggio: "When he walked into the clubhouse, it was like some senator or president walking in there." Only, in DiMaggio's case, presidents invited him to dinner. Time magazine put him on the cover. He married Marilyn Monroe. Willie Mays said he wanted to grow up to be DiMaggio. Ask Pete Rose his age, he says, "Born the year of DiMaggio's streak."
