    Product Description:
For the four decades he's been writing about baseball for The New Yorker , Roger Angell has led all shortlists of the game's most astute and elegant chroniclers. With A Pitcher's Story: Innings with David Cone , he attempts, with thrilling command, something he's never tried beforedevoting a whole volume to one player by spending an entire season at his heels. In pitcher David Cone, a cerebral student of his game and articulate practitioner of his craft, Angell finds a subject as perfect as the perfecto Cone hurled against the Expos on Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium in 1999. Better still, he finds in Cone a partner unwilling to shrink beneath the hot light of what would prove to be an agonizing and introspective year. One of the game's premier pitchers, Cone came unglued in 2000; his 4-14 season was a disaster. The "wizardly old master" Angell had intended to extol was suddenly "Merlin falling headlong down the palace stairs." There's gold to be spun from that, though, and Angell, the essayist as deft alchemist, spins away. The more Cone strugglesthe more he battles age, doubt, injury, and the various curves baseball fate can throwto regain what he's lost, the more valiant he seems. It gives

NEW YORK David Cone stood just inside the Mets' clubhouse, personally delivering the news as his teammates trickled in. It was time to say goodbye. Dressed in a business suit and still looking boyishly young despite a hint of gray around the temples, Cone retired Friday. He cut short his comeback with New York, calling it a career at age 40 because of an arthritic left hip, rather than a tired right arm. "This is the end, for sure," the pitcher said at Shea Stadium. No tears, no long speeches filled with regret. In fact, Cone even called out across the clubhouse to kid the guy taking his place on the roster 42-year-old reliever John Franco , activated from the disabled list after being sidelined since 2001 by elbow surgery. "One of the old expressions in baseball is, 'It's time to get out of the game and give the young guys a chance,'" Cone said. "Man, I'm sorry I forced you out," joked Franco.

A Pitchers Story: Innings with David Cone > Customer Review #1: Angellic game descriptions

Its hard to classify "A Pitchers Story" either as a straight sports autobiography/hagiography, or as a classic Roger Angell essay collection. This, the David Cone story, is Angells first baseball "bio", so to speak, and it helps to have a strong working knowledge of David Cones career before you begin. And yet if you go in expecting 300 pages of nothing but Cone, you may have trouble navigating Angells short trips and side steps around the game he loves so much. Angells biggest strength, at least as Ive always read him, lies in his descriptions of games and players. David Cone started some of the more memorable ballgames of the past decade, and Angells game summaries are magnetic. I like the poetic way in which he visualizes players. Even the cameo by former Cone teammate Terry Leach becomes grand opera in the Angell tradition ("[he] made right-handed batters bend and weave like matadors.").

The atmosphere sizzled with a mix of excitement and disgruntle. For the first time ever, a perfect game was about to be pitched in historic Fenway Park. There was a buzz in the air as the pitcher of record for the home team was pitching perhaps more spectacularly than he ever had, probably even in his own perfect game two years ago. However, the flurries of noise on this day were not for this pitcher, considered by many fans of the opposition as a traitor for signing with the enemy. The man on the mound everyone was talking about on this September night in 2001 might had been Mike Mussina, who eventually lost his perfect game to a bloop single two outs in the ninth to Carl Everett. Yet perhaps the bigger story that night was that at 38-years-old, David Cone had proven that he was still capable of coming up with a big game when the situation called for it. When I first became a Yankees fan in 1998, admittedly as a bandwagon fan and under the influence of my best friend, who adored the Yankees, I knew very little about the Yankees at all, outside of the fact that they were having a record breaking season. It was also the season of a life time for the then 35-year-old Cone, who was well on his way to becoming the pitcher with the longest time span between 20-win seasons.

David Cone
David Brian Cone (born January 2 in Kansas City, Missouri ) was a Major League Baseball player. Armed with a wicked fastball and tremendous instinct on the mound, Cone earned a legion of some of the most devoted fans in major sports, dubbed "Coneheads", who seemed to follow him no matter which team for which he played. Cone, a right-hander, was regarded as one of the top strikeout pitchers in the Majors during the late 1980s and early 1990s and won the American League Cy Young Award in for the Kansas City Royals Table of contents 1 Early career

David was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 3rd round of the 1981 amateur draft and made his Major League debut on June 8 . Prior to the season, however, he was traded with Chris Jelic to the New York Mets for Ed Hearn, Rick Anderson and Mauro Gazzo. The following season, David split time between the bullpen and the starting rotation and enjoyed marginal success, going 5-6.

However, he got a call from the Mets and decided to give it another shot. The results, however, weren't great a 1-3 record and a 6.50 ERA in 5 games and he officially announced his retirement from baseball on May 30, 2003. In 17 seasons, Cone has compiled a 194-126 record with a 3.46 ERA. In 2001, he had pitched to a 9-7 record and a 4.31 ERA. From 1995 to 2000, Cone was a member of the New York Yankees and a part of four World Championship teams. He also pitched a perfect game. Cone has not pitched in over a year, but he has not officially retired from the game. The pitcher made his debut with the Kansas City Royals in 1986. A trade on March 27, 1987 sent Cone and Chris Jelic to the New York Mets for Rick Anderson, Ed Hearn and Mauro Gozzo. The trade proved to be a steal for New York. In 1988, Cone pitched 231.2 innings and compiled a 20-3 record with a 2.22 ERA. He finished third in Cy Young voting.
