Career Pitching Record A right-handed pitcher, Cone joined the AL's Kansas City Royals briefly in 1986 and was then traded to the New York Mets. After going 5-6 in 1987, he had a brilliant 1988 season, leading the NL with an .870 winning percentage on a 20-3 record. Cone won 14 games each of the next three seasons and led the league in strikeouts with 233 in 1990 and 241 in 1991. He set an NL record by striking out 19 hitters in a 9-inning game on October 6, 1991. The Mets traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays near the end of the 1992 season and he returned to Kansas City as a free agent in 1993. Expected to be the team's ace, he had a disappointing 11-14 season despite a 3.33 ERA. The Royals scored only 18 runs in his 14 losses. He rebounded with a 16-5 record in the strike-shortened 1994 season. Cone opened the 1995 season with the Blue Jays, but was traded to the Yankees in mid-season. He had a combined 18-8 record. The following year, though, he went on the disabled list for the first time in his career because of an aneurysm in two arteries in his right shoulder. Once again, Cone bounced back. He went 12-6 with a 2.82 ERA for the the Yankees in 1997 and then put together his second 20-victory season as the team won the 1998 American League pennant. Cone won the sixth and deciding game of the AL championship series against the Cleveland Indians. He also pitched well in his one World Series start, but didn't get the decision.

The House of David Baseball Team
By Joel Hawkins and Terry Bertolino
Arcadia Publishing
p.128
$18.99 Cover Price Perhaps the defining feature as noticed by outsiders in regards to the House of David religious colony was that they did not believe in shaving or cutting their hair. So, they went out and played baseball with heads of hair that in many cases could only be called manes. Baseball seemed to be an integral part of the early life of the House of David and they played as a semi-pro or minor league team from 1914 until 1955 when they stopped fielding baseball and basketball teams. The book gives an outline that just whets the appetite in regards to knowledge of whom the House of David and City of David were. It talks briefly about the imitators (and there were many), false HOD teams, how the team eventually had as many as three traveling teams and the differences when factionalism split the religious colony in two. During their glory days the HOD won many tournaments and beat opponents as good as they came. They fielded teams with players not only from their own colony, but they added others too. Some outside players important to them were Grover Alexander who played and managed, Chief Bender, and Satchel Paige.

His struggles the last few years will probably dim in retrospect what was a terrific career from an intelligent ballplayer who from all accounts grew from destructive, self-centred jerk to the closest thing baseball had to a statesman. Me, I'll always remember Toronto acquiring him for Jeff Kent and Ryan Thompson (a steal, even today) in '92, and that wonderful strike-three backdoor slider to Rickey Henderson in the ALCS. More Articles Home David Cone, The Perfect Game, July 19, 1999 by Harvey Frommer It was "Yogi Berra Day" at the Stadium. Don Larsen was among the 41,930 in attendance. He was there to throw out the first pitch to Berra who caught his "Perfect Game in the 1956 World Series.
The plan was for Larsen to tarry a while in seat behind home plate, watch a few innings and then go back to his hotel and relax. But Larsen, like all the others in the park that day, was riveted to what Yankee starter David Cone was doing to Montreal.
In 95-degree heat, Cone threw all manner of pitches from an assortment of arm angles. Even a 33 minute rain delay in the third inning had little effect on his peerless pitching performance. In the eighth inning, Montreal's Jose Vidro grounded sharply up the middle. Second baseman Chuck Knoblauch, moving right, backhanded the ball and threw him out.
"When Knoblauch made the great play," Cone said, "I decided there was some kind of Yankee aura. Maybe this was my day,"
As the ninth got underway, Cone was given a standing ovation as he walked to the mound. The large crowd remained standing. Cone got the final out - Orlando Cabrera, a popup. Cone grabbed the sides of his head, dropped to his knees and was quickly lifted by his teammates onto their shoulders.

Mets weigh pitch to Cone Still talking, but it may be YES or no By ADAM RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Maybe, Maybe Not: Broadcasting gig may stand in way of David Cone joining Mets. The Mets continue to flirt with David Cone about competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, and a strong possibility exists that he will accept the challenge. "I don't want it to take on a life of its own," GM Steve Phillips said. "We've had some discussions, but I won't have much comment on it until it's decided one way or another. I'd rather not get into much detail about it because there is nothing real definitive one way or another." One source said the deal is Cone's to accept or reject. A resolution is expected today. Cone, 40, last pitched in the majors in 2001, posting a 9-7 record and 4.31 ERA in 135 2/3 innings with Boston. He did part-time work as an analyst and studio host for the YES Network last season, and that involvement could preclude him from returning to the Mets. Should Cone opt to pitch for the Mets this spring and fail to beat out Mike Bacsik, Jason Middlebrook and Aaron Heilman for the fifth spot in the rotation, it's unclear how his affiliation with the Yankee-owned network would be affected.

Cone: Odds against me Admits making Mets a long shot By ADAM RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER David Cone, who last pitched for Red Sox in '01, shows stuff on first day of comeback bid. PORT ST. LUCIE - If David Cone were still employed by the YES Network observing his comeback bid, he would offer a sobering analysis. "I would describe it as a real long shot," Cone said yesterday. "Without a doubt. "And my answer to that would be, 'Well, it's better being a long shot than no shot.' There's nothing to lose. Spring training is a time to experiment, and that's what I view this as." On the opening day of workouts by pitchers and catchers, the 40-year-old Cone arrived at the Mets' spring-training complex for the first time since 1992, headed to a locker between ones occupied by Tom Glavine and Al Leiter and donned a No.16 warmup jacket. He later headed to a mound, shook hands with pitching coach Vern Ruhle and delivered 34 fastballs, with varying grips, at up to 70% of capacity during a five-minute throwing session. He described his mechanics as "a little off" and his control as "not bad," but noted that the real test will be arm strength, especially when he starts snapping sliders.
