Ty Cobb's Greatest Thrill in Baseball

by Dan Holmes (Cooperstown, NY)
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info The battle for the 1907 American League pennant had been fierce all season long. The four contenders - White Sox, Indians, A's, and Tigers - were neck and neck into the homestretch. Finally it was Philadelphia and Detroit battling for the crown and the Bengals wrested away the lead from Mack's Athletics in the opening game of the season-ending series. Then came a day of rain and a doubleheader was scheduled for September 30, 1907 . Philadelphia's Columbia Park could seat 18,000 but 25,000 jammed their way into the venue, with another 5,000 watching from the windows and rooftops overlooking the field. It may have been a nervous occasion for the 20-year old Ty Cobb who was just completing his first full season as a Detroit regular. But based on his performance that day, he was far from nervous. Manager Hughie Jennings selected Wild Bill Donovan to face the A's, and Mack picked spitballer

http://baseballguru.com/omi/ty_cobb.htm
ONE MORE INNING ALL GAME LONG CLAUDE LEUKER HAD BEEN GIVING TY COBB THE BUSINESS. HE HAD TALKED ABOUT HIS HITTING ABILITY AND HOW TERRIBLE A FIELDER HE WAS AND WHAT A MORON HE WAS IN REAL LIFE AND HE THREW IN SOME RACIAL SLURS GRABBED LEUKER AROUND THE NECK, SMASHED HIM TO THE GROUND AND PROCEEDED TO BEAT THE HECK OUT OF HIM. BEFORE ORDER WAS RESTORED THE WHOLE TIGER TEAM RUSHED INTO THE STANDS IN SUPPORT OF COBB. FANS AND PLAYERS PUMMEL-ED EACH OTHER AROUND, WITH SOME ROUGH IT WOULD LEAD TO BIGGER THINGS. THE NEXT TWO DAYS WOULD PROVE TO BE CRUCIAL ONES FOR THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL IN GENERAL, AND WOULD DEV- ELOP INTO CHANGES IN THE WAY THE GAME WOULD BE PLAYED IN THE FUTURE. BY THE WAY, WHEN A FAN POINTED OUT TO COBB THAT LEUKER WAS DISABLED AND HAD NO ARMS, COBB REPLIED THAT HE WOULD BEAT HIM UP EVEN IF HE HAD NO LEGS AS WELL. THE MEDIA HAD A FIELD DAY WITH THIS. T h e s uspensio n g am e AN ARTICLE FROM THE MONTHLY BASEBALL MAGAZINE ONE MORE INNING History gives us some wonderful stories that last through the years, ending up as mythic folklore. That was true on May 18, 1912. Nonentities who would never have been known to us were given their moment of glory, at least in terms of baseball lore. Philadelphia feasted. Led by Eddie Collins 5-6, their hitting included Amos Strunk 3-6, Stuffy McInnis and Hal Maggert 3-4. Jack Coombs was the winner and former Yankee great and future Hall of Famer Herb Pennock pitched three scoreless innings.

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

On July 18 , 1927, Ty Cobb recorded his 4,000th career hit. Cobb finished out his Major League Baseball career in 1929 with a grand total of 4,191 hits. Cobb stood as the all-time hit leader until his total was surpassed by Pete Rose.

Cobb began his professional career at the age of eighteen with the Detroit Tigers with which he played twenty-two of his twenty-four seasons. Like the careers of baseball greats Pete Rose and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Cobb's was marred by scandal. He was allowed to resign in 1926 in lieu of being banned for alleged gambling violations. However, Cobb was subsequently exonerated and reinstated by baseball's first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Cobb, born in Narrows, Georgia and nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," was known for his temper as well as for his outstanding athletic ability. He stole home fifty times, won twelve batting average titles, and managed the Detroit Tigers for six seasons while also playing center field. His lifetime batting average was .367. Cobb made use of his reputation as an aggressive (often dirty) base runner to intimidate infielders, stealing 892 bases during his professional career. Ty Cobb was elected to the

Batting Fundamentals
Ty Cobb Written on May 18, 1938
Printer-Friendly Version Send this page to a friend 1. Don’t grip your bat at the very end. Leave, say, an inch or two. Also, leave at least an inch or more space between your hands ; that gives you balance and control of bat, and also keeps hands from interfering with each other during the swing. Take position at plate, especially against right-hand pitchers, back of plate , and against a man with a real curve, you can stay on back line of batting box . Now try to hit to right-center. I don’t mean you should place the ball in any one spot, but start now practicing to hit your righthanders to the opposite field. An inside ball from a right-hand pitcher you will naturally pull, say, to left-center. 3. Don’t slug at full speed; learn to meet them firmly , and you will be surprised at the results. Now, to hit as I ask, to right-center or center. You stand away from plate the distance you can see with mind’s eye that you can hit the ball that curves on inside corner, to center. This distance away from plate will allow you to hit the outside ball to right. In other words, you protect the plate both on inside pitches and outside.

Tyrus Raymond (Ty) Cobb Born: December 18, 1886
Place: Narrows, Georgia
Died: July 17, 1961
Place: Atlanta, Georgia T I n 1936 Ty Cobb was one of the first five players to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Cobb's career was not without controversy, however. His rough and tumble nature, his stubborness, and his fiery temper all contributed to colorful and sometimes contentious relations with other players, umpires, family, and the press. But he certainly was one of baseball's greatest. Ty Cobb died in Atlanta, Georgia on July 17, 1961 N ot long before he died, Cobb enlisted a young writer, Al Stump, to work with him to create his autobiography. Stump worked by Ty Cobb's side for months and released My Life in Baseball: The True Record . This work is largely considered to be a whitewash of Ty Cobb's baseball career. According to Stump himself, Ty Cobb's editing and revisions to the autobiography were extensive and bent the truth substantially. Interestingly, Stump returned years later to the subject of Ty Cobb, and this time decided to write the complete Cobb story, including Cobb's influence on the first autobiography, all without the forceful Ty Cobb looking over his shoulder. The result is the highly acclaimed Cobb: A Biography . You may click on either title to purchase from Amazon.com. HOME INTRO SYMBOLS ALMANAC ... NETSTATE.STORE
