    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Ty Cobb December 18 July 17 ), also known as "The Georgia Peach", was an American baseball player considered to be the greatest player of the "Deadball Era" (1900-1920), and perhaps of all time. He was the first player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame , in
    Ty Cobb, 1909
(from cigarette package) He was born Tyrus Raymond Cobb in Narrows, Georgia to William, a teacher, and his child-bride, Amanda. William named his eldest child after the Phoenician city of Tyre , which withstood Alexander the Great 's army. Ty so loved baseball, he'd sleep with his homemade bat. William was opposed to Ty playing baseball, fearing it would turn him into a "ruffian." He finally relented, assuming that once Ty got it out of his system, he would return home to lead a "respectable" life. Ty was playing for the Augusta Tourists on August 8 when something happened that changed his life forever. William told Amanda he was going on a 3 day trip, but returned that night, and climbed up a ladder to their bedroom window. Believing him an intruder, she killed him with the shotgun he gave her for her protection. Although he initally supported her (she was acquitted at trial), Ty idolized William, and came to believe the rumors that Amanda was unfaithful and William was trying to catch her with her lover. Ty never got over the incident nor forgave her. Eight days after his father's funeral, Cobb was called up to the Detroit Tigers Cobb won 13 American League batting titles, a record that has not been closely approached. His

There they had heard of him. For Days we talked about Van Bagwell being up there among the minor leagues - a professional and making good. Finally we got a letter from Van Bagwell telling all about the professional league, how the players acted, what was expected of them, and so on. The Bagwell letter having given us all a new line of thought, a friend of mine wrote to Con Strouthers, manager of the Augusta team, about me. The letter from Strouthers was a bombshell in our home. To say that I was excited would be putting it mildly - my father was shocked. Never in my life had I had an argument with my father. Boys in my section of the country accepted family discipline as a matter of course.

The result, My Life in Baseball: The True Record, never came close to reaching first base; with Cobb (holder of the game's highest lifetime batting average and lowest lifetime reputation) calling the signals, it was an antiseptic whitewash, as false as its titular claim would have you believe otherwise. Hidden between the lines was the living hell that Cobbreclusive, bitter, ravaged with cancer, in great pain, and shunned by the baseball communityput Stump through to make sure his demon-filled story was properly sanitized. Some 30 years later, Stump brilliantly wrought his revenge with the best tool a writer can wield: absolute honesty. In Cobb, he rectifies his earlier cover-up and paints an unforgettable portrait of an unforgettable character: The Georgia Peachpits and all. Not only does Stump painstakingly assemble the disparate pieces of Cobb's tangled personality and storied career, he also recounts in scrupulous detail the literal wild ride that comprised his months in the company of the dying baseball legend. It is, from its opening inscription ("To get along with me," Cobb told Stump, "don't increase my tension"), a tour de force, as good a sports biography as exists, and an altogether riveting telling of a riveting life.

The baseball career of Ty Cobb
Ty Cobb, one of the most popular, outspoken players in baseball, set many of the standards for the game in the early 20th century.
Just how good with the bat was Ty Cobb? There was once a story that during a game, the opposing team was heckling Cobb while he was at the plate. Cobb hit the first pitch foul, right into the visitors dugout. He did the same thing on the second pitch...and the third pitch...seven consecutive times he shot the ball at his hecklers. Needless to say, the heckling stopped. Ty Cobb began his big league career in 1905 at the age of 19. Cobb once admitted that he was far from being a great athlete, but that he was so good because of his strong desire to win. That desire made him a very unlikable person among many other major league players, as he often slid into bases with his cleats high and was hostile toward everyone who crossed his path. bodyOffer(20717) Ironically, despite that winning desire, Cobb never won a World Series in his 24-year career. But he did hold almost every batting and base-running record after his retirement. He won 10 batting crowns, and still holds the record for career batting average at .366. He led the league five times in runs scored, four times in RBI, eight times in slugging percentage, and six times in on-base percentage. Hes third in history in stolen bases with 892, and second to Pete Rose in hits with 4191. Cobb played for Detroit through most of his career, including player-manager for the Tigers in 1926. He signed for a brief time with the Philadelphia Athletics and retired after the 1928 season. The Georgia Peach was a member of the first class of inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, receiving 222 of a possible 226 votes.

Web-posted June 21, 1996 at 4 p.m. F or nearly a quarter of a century, Ty Cobb, the greatest baseball player of his day - and some say of all time - made his home in Augusta. He finished his incredible career with dozens of records, including the highest lifetime batting average in major league history. Cobb, known as the ``Georgia Peach,'' was also one of the top celebrities of his day - a man who golfed with U.S. presidents, made a fortune on outside investments and even played the theater circuit. But his image is forever shaped by his aggressive play on the field and his off-field bouts of violence - both presented in this year's movie Cobb, staring Tommy Lee Jones, and the book it was based on by sportswriter Al Stump. On the field, Cobb taunted opponents as well as teammates, threatening them with his sharpened spikes, his bat or his fists. Away from the field, Cobb was frequently hauled into court for his assaults on fans, hotel porters, even a neighborhood butcher.

Who do you think are the greatest baseball players of all time? If it were 1927, you might have named Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb. On July 18, 1927, Cobb recorded his 4,000th career hit. Can you imagine getting 4,000 hits? Cobb is considered by many to be the greatest offensive player in baseball history. He started his professional baseball career when he was 18 years old. For 22 out of 24 seasons, he played with the Detroit Tigers. In this baseball card from 1912, Cobb is stealing third base.

Joe Jackson was banned from baseball after being involved in a conspiracy to "throw" (fix the outcome of) the World Series in 1919, known as the Black Sox Scandal. Cobb was allowed to resign from professional baseball in 1926 after supposedly being involved in gambling violations. Later, baseball's first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, cleared Cobb of charges and allowed him to play again. Cobb, a left-handed batter who threw with his right hand, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Cobb's autobiography, titled My Life in Baseball, was published in 1961.

    Ty Cobb
    By: Hank H.
Tyrus Raymond Cobb was born on December 18, 1886 in Northern Georgia. Ty’s dad was William H. Cobb and his mom was Amanda Chitwood Cobb. Ty’s brother was born two years later and a sister six years later. Ty did not like school at all because it kept him from playing baseball, and because of this he did poorly. Ty’s father was a prominent man in town and Ty wanted to impress his father, but he could not find anything that interested him besides baseball. He tried farming, being a doctor, being a lawyer, and even growing cotton, but nothing came of these pursuits. So Ty chose baseball as a career.
Ty tried out for a team in Georgia but he was cut. Then Ty found another job in Alabama, but at the age of 16 had to ask for his father’s permission. His father gave his consent, but said "Don’t come home a failure", and with that motivation Ty went to Alabama. There he was at first unnoticed, but slowly gained some recognition as a player . After the end of that year he went back to Georgia to play for the Reds, a minor league team. After a year with the Reds, Ty was drafted to the major league Detroit Tigers.
Cobb’s first year in the majors he hit .240, the only year he didn’t hit over .300. After that, Cobb went on to win numerous batting titles and two cars for two of those batting titles. While playing for the Tigers, Cobb’s dad was shot and killed by his mother because she mistook him for a robber. Cobb also enlisted in the US Army in 1915 but two years later returned to baseball. After 19 seasons with the Tigers, Cobb became the manager. He managed them to two pennants. After that he came back and played two more years with the A’s.
