Ty Cobb may have been baseball's greatest player, if not the game's fiercest competitor. His batting accomplishments are legendary — a lifetime average of .367, 297 triples, 4,191 hits, 12 batting titles (including nine in a row), 23 straight seasons in which he hit over .300, three .400 seasons (topped by a .420 mark in 1911), and 2,245 runs. Intimidating the opposition, "The Georgia Peach" stole 892 bases during a 24-year career, primarily with the Detroit Tigers. Did you know ... that on May 5, 1925, Ty Cobb collected 16 total bases (three home runs, a double and two singles), setting a single-game American League record that has yet to be surpassed? Ty Cobb. The Georgia Peach. I have been fascinated by Ty Cobb and the things that he did both on and off the field for several years now, and I do not pretend to be unbiased. If it seems that I have not presented a balanced view of Cobb and his activities, it is because I don't think I can present a balanced view. However, this does not mean that I in any way condone, support, or defend some of Cobb's more objectionable behavior. I simply wish to report on Cobb's story as far as baseball is concerned. His is a story that must be told, and this is the medium which I have chosen to tell this version of Cobb's story. I have researched this page quite thoroughly, and, to the best of my knowledge, the facts of his life are accurate as reported here. If there are indeed any errors, please contact me . Although the reporting isn't unbiased and doesn't pretend to be, I do not wish to spread half-truths and misinformation. That being said, here is the fruit of my labor, and I hope you enjoy it.

By Ed Price
Staff Writer
Web-posted June 21, 1996 at 4 p.m. F or nearly a quarter of a century, Ty Cobb, the greatest baseball player of his day - and some say of all time - made his home in Augusta. He finished his incredible career with dozens of records, including the highest lifetime batting average in major league history. Cobb, known as the ``Georgia Peach,'' was also one of the top celebrities of his day - a man who golfed with U.S. presidents, made a fortune on outside investments and even played the theater circuit. But his image is forever shaped by his aggressive play on the field and his off-field bouts of violence - both presented in this year's movie Cobb, staring Tommy Lee Jones, and the book it was based on by sportswriter Al Stump. On the field, Cobb taunted opponents as well as teammates, threatening them with his sharpened spikes, his bat or his fists. Away from the field, Cobb was frequently hauled into court for his assaults on fans, hotel porters, even a neighborhood butcher.

TY COBB
In 24 seasons, most with the Detroit Tigers, Ty Cobb compiled a .366 batting average, the highest in the history of the game. He was the leader in runs scored for more than 70 years and in hits for nearly 60 years. In 1936, Cobb became the first man inducted into the Hall of Fame, earning 222 out of a possible 226 votes, more than Babe Ruth, Nap Lajoie, Walter Johnson, or Honus Wagner. Cobb blazed and battled a path through baseball, retiring with more records than any other player. He was raised by a demanding father who named his son after the Lebanon city of Tyre, which showed tremendous courage in repelling the armies of Alexander the Great.

How Cobb Got Along With Others
Part 3: Ty and Those Outside Baseball
Perhaps the most defining aspect of Cobb's personality was his racism. Although he grew up in a time and place where behavior like his was common and accepted, it is extremely appalling to most people today. He simply felt that blacks were inferior and would never receive the same treatment from him that whites did. Examples unfortunately abound. One day while walking in Detroit, he stepped in freshly poured asphalt and was yelled at by Fred Collins, a construction worker who happened to be black. Cobb responded by slapping Collins, knocking him to the ground, and continuing on his way. He was charged with assault and battery and found guilty, but received a suspended sentence. Collins then filed a civil suit, which Cobb settled out of court for $75. An unfortunate incident in Cleveland's Hotel Euclid forced Cobb to go through Canada to avoid arrest during the 1909 World Series in Pittsburgh. Late one Friday night, Cobb got in an argument with the elevator operator and slapped him. The night manager, a black man named George Stansfield, came to aid the elevator operator and ended up in a shouting match with Cobb. Stansfield then hit Cobb with his nightstick, and the two rolled on the floor. Cobb drew his knife and slashed Stansfield, while Stansfield drew his pistol and hit Cobb again with the nightstick. Stansfield filed both criminal and civil suits against Cobb, but later dropped the criminal suit. But the case was still pending during the World Series, with an arrest warrant out for Cobb. Police waited for the Tiger train through Ohio en route to Pittsburgh for the World Series to arrest him, but Cobb was going through Canada. The civil suit was settled for $100 and court costs.

His best years were 1911, when he led the league in every major offensive category but homers and batted a career high .420, and in 1915 when he stole 96 bases.
Ty paid the price for success. He would practice sliding until his legs were raw. He would place blankets along the base and practice bunting a ball on the basket. During the winter he hunted through daylight hours in weighted boots so that his legs would be strong for the upcoming campaign. He overlooked no opportunity to gain an edge over his opponents, most of whom admired his drive to succeed.
Cobb appreciated the value of a dollar and engaged in annual haggles with Detroit executives before signing his contract. Cobb's earnings were invested wisely, mostly in General Motors and Coca-Cola stock, which made him very wealthy and probably baseball's first millionaire.

Career Batting Record Some consider Cobb the greatest baseball player ever. He was certainly the most feared and most disliked. He played as if driven by demons. Hughie Jennings, who managed him for several years, said of Cobb, "When he was in his prime, he had half the American League scared stiff." Rube Bressler, who played against him, described Cobb as "the most feared man in the history of baseball." Cobb once announced, "I would cut the heart out of my best friend if he ever tried to block the road." His apparent hatred for the world and almost everyone in it probably stemmed, at least in part, from his father's tragic death in 1905. Suspecting his wife of infidelity, W. H. Cobb climbed a ladder to look into her bedroom window one night and Mrs. Cobb shot and killed him. She was tried for voluntary manslaughter but won acquittal, testifying that she had mistaken her husband for an intruder. Cobb, who was very close to his father, saw his mother only occasionally after that and didn't attend her funeral. On August 30 of that year, Cobb joined the AL's Detroit Tigers. From the beginning, he refused to room with anyone, ate his meals alone, and rarely spoke to any of his teammates off the field. But even the opponents who feared him soon had to respect his skills as a hitter and base-runner.
