After reading this book, you will have a whole new outlook on how great a person Roberto Clemente really was. If you are a Clemente fan, like I am, I highly recommend this book. You just can't say enough about how underated he was while he was alive, and what a great man he was.
RECOMMENDED READING If you never had a chance to see this man play, you really missed a legend. He not only put fear into the other team, but there fans as well. You just didnt try to turn a single into a double if you hit the ball to him in right field. Baseball lost one of there all time greats when they lost Clemente.

Career Batting Record Clemente originally signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers for a $10,000 bonus in 1954 and he spent the season with their top farm club. He was used sparingly, because the Dodgers were trying to hide his skills from other teams. At the time, a player who received a signing bonus could be drafted by another team if he wasn't placed on the major league roster after one season in the minors. The talent-laden Dodgers didn't put Clemente on their roster, and he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates for $4,000. Clemente became Pittsburgh's starting rightfielder during the 1955 season. He hit over .300 only once in his first five seasons, but he batted .314 with 16 homers in 1960, when the Pirates won the pennant, and he hit .310 in their seven-game win over the New York Yankees in the World Series. In the next seven years, Clemente won four batting titles, hitting .351 in 1961, .339 in 1964, .329 in 1965, and .357 in 1967. He was named the NL's most valuable player in 1966, when he hit .317 with 29 home runs and 119 RBI. After slipping to .291 in 1968, Clemente hit .345, .352, .341, and .312 in the next four seasons. Through most of his career, Clemente felt he was overlooked because of his Puerto Rican origin, and he was determined to impress the national television audience when the Pirates got into the 1971 World Series. He succeeded, batting .414 with 12 hits, including 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 2 home runs, and he made some outstanding plays in the field as Pittsburgh beat the Baltimore Orioles in seven games. Clemente easily won the most valuable player award for the series.

1995 Roberto Clemente... Roberto Walker Clemente He was always a heroic figure, a sleek, compact-muscle man who could do it all on a baseball field, whether it was Forbes Field or Three Rivers Stadium or some distant outpost in this country or his native Puerto Rico. It took awhile for Pirate fans to truly appreciate him, and it took his untimely death in an air tragedy ion 1972 to properly focus attention on his marvelous feats, both on and off the playing field. Real fame came to Clemente late in life, and more so when he was gone. Roberto Walker Clemente came to the Pirates in 1955, brought to Pittsburgh by Branch Rickey, and he played 18 summers - sometimes spectacular summers which stretched into falls, and found the Pirates winning the World Series - and he set the standards for the Willie Stargells and Dave Parkers to push toward in later days. He was something else, something special, an athletic marvel. Sometimes he was hard to understand, and to fathom, but this may have added to his mystique more than anything else. Clemente cried out to be loved, lauded, to be cheered, to be crowned as one of the games's greatest players. He came from Puerto Rico, but Clemente became a big part of Pittsburgh. "In a way, I was born twice," Clemente said when he was honored in special ceremonies on July 25, 1970 at Three Rivers Stadium, his night at the ballpark. "I was born in 1934 and again in 1955, when I came to Pittsburgh. I am thankful I can say that I live two lives."

Roberto Walker Clemente , Voted into baseball's Hall of Fame 20 March 1973. BORN: 18 August 1934. DIED: 31 December 1972. BURIED:
  • He is rightfully Pittsburgh's pride and joy. The fans laugh at his antics, ooh-and-ah at his spectacular plays, roar in anticipation of his performance, and in general love the man. In my recollection there has never been any concerted booing of Clemente at Forbes Field, a remarkable tribute from fans not always noted for their generosity toward their heroes. Long ago they began delighting in this finely-honed, slightly structured man whose strength and skill are evident in the results rather in his appearance. And they have never stopped.
  • That play Clemente made in the eighth inning is why he is the greatest player in the game today. Next week in the championship playoffs and the following week in the World Series, every player will make that play. They'll be diving for balls. But Roberto Clemente is the only player in the game today who will make that play in a meaningless game the last week of the season. That's why he's the greatest player in the game today
  • And nobody quite combines a running catch, a whirl and a throw the way Clemente doesso that he is occasionally photographed suspended sideways in the air, about four feet above the ground, releasing a lightning bolt.
