Roberto Clemente Walker's pride and humanitarianism won him universal admiration. Despite an unorthodox batting style, the Pirates' great won four batting crowns and amassed 3,000 hits. He was equally brilliant in right field, where he displayed a precise and powerful arm. Clemente earned National League MVP honors in 1966, but achieved his greatest fame in the 1971 World Series, when he batted .414. Tragically, Clemente's life ended at age 38 — the victim of a plane crash while flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. Roberto Clemente Walker was born in Barrio San Anton in Carolina, Puerto Rico, August 18, 1934. The youngest of four children, Roberto excelled in track and field, winning medals in the javelin throw and short distance races. However, his real love was baseball. He played amateur baseball with Juncos Double A Club and soon went on to play with the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rican Winter League. From Santurce he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was assigned to play for their top affiliate, the Montreal Royals. In 1954, the Pittsburgh Pirates obtained Roberto with the # 1 pick of the draft, which was awarded to the Pirates. Clemente joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955, where he played his entire eighteen year Major League Baseball career from 1955 to 1972. Roberto played in two World Series, batting .310 in 1960 and .414 in 1971. He was the National League Batting Champion four times, was awarded twelve Gold Gloves, selected National League MVP in 1966 and was chosen as the MVP in the 1971 World Series. On November 14, 1964, he married Vera Cristina Zabala in Carolina, Puerto Rico. They had three sons: Roberto Jr., Luis Roberto and Roberto Enrique. Proud of his heritage Roberto insisted that Vera give birth to all three sons in Puerto Rico. The boys were six, five and two, respectively, when their father met his untimely death. New Year's Eve, December 31, 1997 marked the 25th Anniversary of a tragic plane crash. The plane was taking medical, food and clothing supplies to earthquake stricken Nicaragua. Vera and friends begged him not to take the trip (poor weather and an unstable cargo plane) but Roberto was determined. He was infuriated that the previous supplies had not made it to the victims. Roberto was going to personally see to it that the victims received the much needed supplies. Unfortunately, the plane went down off the coast of Puerto Rico. Roberto's body was never found. Just months after Roberto joined an elite group of players with 3,000 hits, he was gone.

Manny Sanguillen Teammate and Friend of Roberto's Major League Baseball and the Clemente family are pleased to announce that the John Hancock Financial Services company will be the presenting sponsor of the Roberto Clemente Award through 2004. John Hancock is promising to generate a greater awareness of the Award, the local player finalists and ultimately the winner by leveraging their national media buys and public relations activities.

ROBERTO CLEMENTE
A member of the 3,000-hit club, Roberto Clemente was a tremendously proud man who was often misunderstood by the press and his teammates. He was criticized for refusing to play with minor injuries, despite the fact that he won four batting championships. He played on two Pirate World Series winners and became a legendary figure after his tragic death while delivering supplies to victims of the Nicaraguan earthquake in 1972.
His tragic death prompted the Hall of Fame's Board of Director's to unanimously wave the customary five year period for induction, opening the door for the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) to hold a special election on Clemente's behalf. By an overwhelming vote of 93%, Clemente became the first player of Latin American descent to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Nicknames
Writers dubbed him "The Great One." His friends called him "Bobby" or "Bob." Clemente was also called "Arriba" in his native Puerto Rico.

http://www.toptown.com/hp/66/RobertoMemories.htm
Remembering Roberto The following are a few quotes, facts, and stories that have been published to honor Roberto Clemente on the 25th anniversary of his tragic death. They are in no particular order and were gathered from a variety of sources. More info is located on my Roberto Tribute Page Former Pirate GM Joe L. Brown:
"He's a shining star to many, many people. He grows and grows over time. He doesn't diminish... The sad part is that there are not enough TV pictures of him. He made so many great plays that people can only talk about. You could never capture the magnificence of the man."
  • Former baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn during his 1973 eulogy to Clemente: "He gave the term 'complete' a new meaning. He made the word 'superstar' seem inadequate. He had about him the touch of royalty." The Puerto Rican Winter League has dedicated this season to the memory of Roberto, and by league mandate, the number 21 has been retired in perpetuity and will not be worn again in the winter league by any player. Pirate owner Kevin McClatchy: "If we have a foundation with Roberto Clemente's name on it, as a franchise we have a responsibility to make sure that it grows. Having kids play baseball in the inner city was important to Roberto Clemente, and we're going down that same road."

Roberto Clemente Some consider Roberto Clemente the best right fielder in the history of baseball. In his 18-year baseball career, Roberto received many awards. He won four batting crowns and 12 Gold Gloves. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the National League in 1966, and the World Series Most Valuable Player in 1971. He also was the first Hispanic elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition, Roberto was generous to those in need. Roberto, whose full name was Roberto Walker Clemente, was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico to Melchor Clemente and Luisa (Walker) Clemente. Melchor worked on a sugar cane plantation and helped his wife manage a grocery store and meat market. While still attending high school, Roberto began playing baseball for the Santurce Crabbers, a professional Puerto Rican baseball team. Two years later, a Brooklyn Dodgers scout recruited him to play for the Dodger's farm team, the Montreal Royals, the same team Jackie Robinson once joined. Despite the team's efforts to keep Roberto's talents unknown, the Pittsburgh Pirates recruited him on November 22, 1954. Roberto played right field for the Pirates for the rest of his career. Two years after joining the team, Roberto became the top player among outfielders, recording 22 assists. Roberto was often seen using the famous basket catch, a technique his predecessor, Willie Mays, often used. The Pirates won the National League Pennant in 1960 and then beat the Yankees in the World Series. Roberto hit safely in every game, batting .310. This was the same season that Roberto played on his first All-Star team.
